Used to be, the only egg shaped items Jason Mraz was crazy about were his avocados. Now, the former vegan is actually eating real eggs. From the chickens in his neighbor’s yard. Presumably, he’s not stealing them in the middle of the night.

Jillian Michaels has whittled down her animal intake to sustainable fish, citing her reasons to the Houston Chronicle as being for animal welfare.

“Personally I’m not eating chicken or beef right now. It’s not about health; it’s about the slaughterhouse practices. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, organic yogurt and eggs and a lot of beans and nuts. But I also eat things like dark chocolate.”

Those who avoid red meat but still eat chicken may want to know that, according to the Humane Society of the United States, about 95% of land animals in the United States slaughtered for food are chickens, which undergo painful deaths to get to the plates of Americans.

There’s no shortage of vegetarian cookbooks out there, but if you happen to find a book designed for omnivores that looks interesting, a fun task to attempt might be to see how you can vegetize or veganize the recipes with substitutions.

Kate Nash loves Jamie Oliver‘s Ministry of Food and finds no problem in swapping Quorn faux meat for mince in the lasagna recipe.

“I chose Jamie’s lasagne as my favourite recipe because I love Italian food and this is a really easy recipe to adapt,” Nash told The Guardian. “In this recipe I swap mince for Quorn mince, use lactose-free cheese and spelt pasta and it still works.”

Amanda Cohen, founder and chef of New York city vegetarian restaurant Dirt Candy, will be competing on Iron Chef America on August 29th, 2010 at 10 PM ET/PT against Chef Masaharu Morimoto in a vegetarian on vegetarian challenge.

To Cohen’s surprise, Moriomoto stuck to an entirely vegetarian menu during the challenge in which Cohen worked so hard her pants fell down.

“I can only hope that this moment didn’t make it onto national TV,” Cohen told Lunch Box Bunch about the embarrassing moment during an exclusive interview.

Ted Nugent exercised his brilliance by shooting a young buck in front of thousands of people on his hunting show, Spirit of the Wild. He manged to escape charges for this, but didn’t get away with using bait to kill a deer, something legal in some states, but not in California.

"The Dorm Room Diet" Daphne Oz

Today’s the last day to enter The Dorm Room Diet “Get A Tip, Give A Tip” contest for a chance to receive a free copy of the book written by Daphne Oz with a forward by her father and daytime TV host, Dr. Mehmet Oz.

To enter, simply leave a comment on this post giving your tip for staying healthy. Be sure to also check out our exclusive interview with Daphne.

In The Dorm Room Diet, Daphne writes about “Danger Zones” or situations where you may be tempted to eat unhealthy high sugar, high fat and low nutrient foods like while watching TV, studying or working late at night or in social situations. One way to counter this is by eating berries during these times.

“They take time to eat, come in small pieces, and are sweet enough to curb sugar cravings,” Daphne writes.

Don’t forget to buy berries organic whenever possible, as some of them, like blueberries and strawberries, are on the dirty dozen list of produce that contains the highest levels of pesticide residue.

And that’s the final tip of the day. What’s yours?

“The vegetarians are a little mad at me because I said all the fat people should eat them. Of course I love all people, and I found a lot of vegetarians have a really good sense of humor. So they get it, and we all get along.”

–Comedian Loni Love, on her jokes made about vegetarians. Hard to say which is worst, the cannibalistic fat people joke or the one about your pet pig one day providing dinner. Maybe she should leave the veggie humor to vegan comedian Myq Kaplan.
