“The race fans forgive me for being an environmentalist because I have a race car. That’s why they’re listening to me; I have a race car underneath me. If I was just a biology graduate, trying to ask them to do these things, I don’t think any of them would hear me.”

Leilani Munter, to the Department of Energy, on how she is able to connect with NASCAR fans on environmental issues and not turn them off by stereotypes of environmentalists and vegetarians.

In the ARCA race on September 30th, Munter will drive a car sponsored by Operation Free, a group of military veterans who advocate energy independence and action on climate change.

Hugh Jackman has written to Nancy Pelosi, urging the Speaker of the House that the Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act is passed this month. Sounds as if the actor who considered going vegan for the Wolverine sequel wants the same for America’s children as well.

In a letter to Pelosi, Jackman wrote:

“This crucial legislation would help schools serve more plant-based foods — fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes — because these foods have been shown to help children maintain a healthy weight and avoid disease. Schools should be able to purchase low-cost fruits and vegetables, and they should also have access to vegetarian entree options.”

Ricky Gervais Supports “Stop The Baby Trade” Monkey Trade For Research

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, September 23rd, 2010 in Actors, Animal Issues, Comedians.

Ricky Gervais is throwing himself into another campaign to help animals. The comedian and actor supports the BUAV (British Union Abolition for the Vivisection of Animals) to stop the international trade of monkeys in research.

“Imprisoning monkeys and snatching their babies is a disgusting way to treat other primates”, said Ricky. “Monkeys are highly intelligent beings who feel pain and distress, just like us.”

Perhaps just as tortuous as imprisonment is the way these creatures and taken from the parents in the wild, according to the BUAV site.

Dolphin killings have resumed at The Cove in Japan, despite awareness brought to the issue by the award winning documentary with the same title. Leilani Munter had written about her plans to visit the area awhile ago, and VegNews caught up with her to get an update on her activist experience.

The race car driver explained that while the activists are watching the area during the season from September through March, the hunters don’t do much killing. But there are not enough people to keep vigil through that entire time, something she’d like to change.

“What we’re trying to do is get a whole team of people to Taiji, and be there for the whole killing season, which is September through to March, because that’s really what needs to happen. If it’s our presence there that’s deterring the killing then we can’t just be there for a week from September 1. That’s the challenge, and for that reason I’m going back to Taiji in a couple of weeks.”

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland shares her thoughts with Peta2 on animal testing, dissection and adoption.

“I feel like companies that still test on animals should either be shut-down or all just arrested because there are companies that don’t test on animals. If there’s one company that doesn’t do it and 5 that do, I don’t understand why those 5 can’t follow the same path as that one.”

The American Anti-Vivisection Society has a page that lists companies that are cruelty-free, where you may look up some popular brands you may use, such as Burt’s Bees, Giovanni Cosmetics and Alba Botanica.

“Slowly jumpstart your culinary journey with a once-a-week commitment by leaving the animal products out of your repertoire for a single day/three full meals.”

“View it as a fun experiment rather than as a sacrifice – you might just discover that the food addictions you once had for bad-body-munchies end up shifting over to edibles that actually make you feel revitalized (and are healthy, to boot).”

Daniel Bryan Ricky Williams–Who Would You

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Polls/Surveys, Who Would You.

WWE wrestler Daniel Bryan and Miami Dolphins football player Ricky Williams have made headlines this week, for in the ring and off the field performances.

Vegan Bryan recently won the U.S. WWE Wrestling competition while Ricky has been asked to endorse a set of health and fitness equipment.

So nice to see the stereotype of scrawny, vegetarian men get broken. As you can see from their pictures, neither is lacking in meat on their bones, although you’ll find it missing in their diets. Between the two athletes, who would you rather…
