Much to the disappointment of vegans, the NFL has teamed up with dairy farmers in a campaign to fight childhood obesity.

The Fuel Up To Play 60 campaign encourages children to practice better lifestyle habits such as consuming low fat milk and exercising.

Politics aside, evidence for dairy being beneficial to weight maintenance is not conclusive.

Some studies have linked milk consumption to a decrease in the risk for obesity, while others found the opposite.

Since this particular campaign is directed at children, it’s interesting to note one study in the Archives of Pediatric Adolescent Medicine found children that drank the most milk gained the most weight.

Hedren’s life with big cats started in the 80s when she produced and starred in the film with African Lions, Roar, inciting her interest in the giant creatures.

Hedren was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Humane Society’s Genesis Awards.

“It’s such a gift to have a mission that you feel really strongly about,” Hedren says in the video.

American Idol Gives Back

Carrie Underwood told US Magazine at the American Idol Gives Back show that she rarely eats out at restaurants.

“I think the hardest thing about what I do is eating [healthy] because we’re all over the place,” Underwood said.

“It’s fast food, there’s aftershow food, you get pizza, whatever,” she added. “I don’t do that. I don’t eat out ever.”

“Every once in a while I have a day off and I might go to a restaurant — but no aftershow food and I keep my fridge stocked.”

Carrie’s reluctance to go out may have a lot to do with her vegetarian diet.

Not every part of the country is as vegetarian friendly as others, especially the parts of the United States that boo her for announcing she’s veg on stage.

Still, this gal could use an iphone application like VegOut every once in awhile to navigate her way to the nearest veg friendly restaurant.

Camilla, Duchess Of Cornwall Praises Seasonal British Produce

The Duchess Of Cornwall Visits Polish Social And Cultural Association

British food dull and boring?

Ha!

That’s not what the Duchess of Cornwall thinks.

At an event to launch British Food Fortnight, an campaign meant to highlight British producers, Camilla said the stereotypes of British food being “dull, turgid and over-boiled” were “utter rubbish”.

Camilla said she loved food that “followed the seasons”, not the “whims” of “multinational food conglomerates”.

It must be a family affair, as Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, supports eating locally, organic grown produce too.

Information about the seasonal produce available in different areas of Britain, as well as advice for starting your own garden, can be found on the British Fortnight website.

Maureen McCormick–Marcia Brady Likes Beans And Rice

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 23rd, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

Friendly House 20th Annual Luncheon

Maureen McCormick may like beans and rice as much as she liked kissing Gary Williams, otherwise known as Greg Brady, from the 70s series they starred in, The Brady Bunch.

“I had a mad crush on Barry at the time,” McCormick said, according to Palm Beach Post. “He’s single now, by the way.”

McCormick said she’s a vegetarian, and eating lots of the two foods together is how she gets her protein.

Interesting…

Two years ago, PETA sent McCormick a letter asking her to go vegetarian, insisting the diet would help her maintain her trim figure she obtained from Celebrity Fit Club.

Bet the animal rights group is smug knowing they can claim her as a victory.

Traditionally, kidney or black beans first come to mind when a dinner for beans and rice is suggested, but that shouldn’t stop you from exploring other legumes.

If you like hummus, you might love chickpeas, as the garbanzo bean is what’s mashed up and blended with spices to create the dip accompanied with pita chips.

If you’ve ever eaten an Asian meal with red bean paste, you’ve probably tasted the azuki bean, the tiny reddish brown bean grown in Asia and the Himalayans, that taste incredible over a salad as well.

Maybe McCormick will talk about her bean experiences in the follow up to her 2008 book she’s writing.

Premiere Of CBS Films' The Back-up Plan - Arrivals

Jennifer Lopez‘s new movie, The Backup Plan, has two incredible eco and animal rights themes included in the story line.

Lopez’s character Zoe, is a single woman who gets artificially inseminated only to discover the man of her dreams in a taxi days later.

Zoe has just left her corporate job to take over a pet shop that sold her a disabled dog that came from a puppy mill.

Her true love Stan, played by Alex O’Loughlin, has turned his family farm into an organic one and sells his cheese products at the farmers market.

An animal welfare champ and a locavore getting together to raise a child?

We can smell a protest coming from the crib already.

According National Geographic, buying from a puppy mill is more likely to result in an animal that will need urgent veterinary care for a genetic disease it’s carrying, amplified by inbreeding. These diseases may not surface until several years into its life.

It’s also common to see chronic infections in these animals, such as in the ears and eyes, that can lead to blindness and deafness.

Animal Factory by David Kirby

Animal Factory by David Kirby

Journalist David Kirby recalls the night he slept near a pig farm during his investigations of factory farms.

Kirby wasn’t able to fall asleep that night, as all he heard were pigs fighting, screaming and squealing at each other, a sound he described as “kids being tourtured.”

Those three years of experiences that led to his book, Animal Factory, are just a few that he shared in a recent Time magazine interview, “The Problem With Factory Farms.”

What Exactly is a Factory Farm?
We collectively refer to these facilities as factory farms, but that’s not an official name. The government designation is CAFO, which stands for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation. Basically it’s any farm that has 1,000 “animal units” or more. A beef cow is an animal unit. These animals are kept in pens their entire lives. They’re never outside. They never breathe fresh air. They never see the sun.

What happens to the wastes from factory farms?
The manure is liquefied. It gets flushed out into an open lagoon, where it is stored until farmers can use it on what few crops they do grow. There’s just so much of it, though. I’ve seen it sprayed into waterways and creeks. These “lagoons” filled with waste have been known to seep, leak, rupture, and overtop. This stuff is untreated, by the way. We would never allow big open cesspools of untreated human waste to just sit out on the ground near people’s homes and schools. And yet because it’s agriculture, the rules are different.
