RAFW S/S 2010/11 - Nookie Catwalk

Louise Van De Vorst made a creative scene at Australian Fashion Week on Wednesday when she arrived in a Volcano dress by designers Romance Was Born.

Van De Vorst is a successful model who is branching out and starting her own clothing line.

This vegan, much like her boyfriend, Silverchair’s front man Daniel Johns, is quite ethical in her food and fashion, and won’t be putting any real fur on the catwalk.

“With myself I do use fake fur and it’s really important to do that kind of stuff,” she said.

With the rise in real fur at so many fashion weeks during the past few months, Van De Vorst’s ethics are a refreshing change.

Stefanie Hart Aims For The 105 Year Plan With Vegetarian Diet

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 6th, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

TCM Classic Film Festival Opening Night Screening Of A Star Is Born

Stefanie Hart, the actress that starred in the popular “Hart To Hart” TV show, says she’d like to be on the 105 year plan.

For life, that is.

When asked how she deals with the aging process, she hinted that her diet may help her get through it, and insists she only wants longevity if the years are healthy.

“For a start, I’m maniacal about exercise. I’m a vegetarian, not a vegan, and I try to do the best I can to be aware of health hazards and do what I can to sustain myself in the most sensible way. Yes, I’d like to be on the 105-year plan, but only if the quality of those 105 years is good.”

Stefanie may have already bought her quality old age, since she’s been adhering to a diet without meat.

Vegetarians have a lower risk of dying from heart disease and low meat intake has been associated with greater longevity.

Let’s all aim for the 105 year plan, because the golden years are going to be great!

The owner of the famous bakery in New York City offering vegan, sugar-free, and gluten-free desserts has a blueberry muffins recipe that she made on Good Morning America.

If you’re out of coconut oil, don’t despair.

According to the FAQs, any other vegetable oil can be substituted in the batter. However, if you were making frosting, you’d have to use liquid coconut oil.

Students with food trays

The most unhealthy school lunch sitting in the cafeteria these days is beef and cheese nachos.

Given the amount of animal fat, cholesterol and dairy in such a meal, it’s easy to understand why.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine analyzed the school lunches on menus from 18 elementary schools across the country and found meatloaf and potatoes, cheeseburgers, cheese sandwiches and pepperoni pizza didn’t trail far behind the beefy nachos.

A bill introduced by representative Jared Polis, the Healthy School Meals Act or H.R. 4870, is trying to change this.

If passed, it would provide funds to school districts to purchase healthier items and place more vegetarian entrees and non dairy beverages on the menus.

H.R. 4870 can’t come soon enough!

President’s Cancer Panel Says Organic Is Best

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 6th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Nutrition-Health-Fitness, Politicians.

U.S. President Obama speaks to the Business Council in Washington

President Barack Obama received a report that says Americans buying and eating organic can reduce their exposure to environmental chemicals that increase their risk of cancer.

In the report, titled “Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now,” the President’s Cancer Panel says that exposure to these chemicals is minimal in organic foods and consumers should verify the product is organic by looking for the USDA label.

“The American people — even before they are born — are bombarded continually with myriad combinations of these dangerous exposures,” the letter said. “The Panel urges you most strongly to use the power of your office to remove the carcinogens and other toxins from our food, water, and air that needlessly increase health care costs, cripple our Nation’s productivity, and devastate American lives.”

“Many known or suspected carcinogens first identified through studies of industrial and agricultural occupational exposures have since found their way into soil, air, water and numerous consumer products… Some of these chemicals have been found in maternal blood, placental tissue, and breast milk samples from pregnant women and mothers who recently gave birth. Thus, chemical contaminants are being passed on to the next generation, both prenatally and during breastfeeding.”

Now that the government has given the thumbs up to organic, let’s hope for an overhaul in the food system to make it more affordable and accessible to all!

Horse Killed During HBO “Luck” Filming

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 6th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Film & TV, Research + Science.

Vegas Vacation

Horse are injured and die during races, and the movies are no exception.

A horse was injured on the set of filming the HBO movie, Luck, and was forced to be euthanized because its injuries were deemed to be inoperable according to veterinarians working on the set.

During a race, the horse stumbled and fell on its shoulder, causing a severe fracture.

The movie Luck is about the horse racing industry.

“The pilot is about a bunch of intersecting lives in the world of the horse racing track,” David Milch, creator and executive producer of the show recently told Daily Variety.

Unfortunately, the horse’s death is an unfortunate reality in the world of the horse racing track too.

A study discussed in the New York Times revealed that from about 2003-2005, there were over 3,000 horse deaths related to the racing industry, according to statistics from the Congressional subcommittee by the Association of Racing Commissioners International.

“This was an unfortunate accident that was in no way a result of any mistreatment or negligence on the part of HBO,” said Karen Rosa, vice president of American Humane’s Film & Television Unit. “We are all sincerely saddened by this accident that happened after the final shot on the final day of filming for this show. Throughout filming, HBO has been extremely collaborative and responsive to the many safety guidelines and precautions we put in place.”
