HLN anchor Jane Velez Mitchell devoted an entire chapter to vegetarians, AR issues in her book iWant.

As expected, some great quotes can be taken from the chapter, “Veganism/Animal Activism: I Want to Make a Difference.”

Here are a few that cover diet, animal welfare and the environment.

“The mutt in the shelter is just as good a dog and often healthier and smarter. Certainly, a mutt is less likely to be inbred.”

“By going vegan, the average American consumer can become a hero, sparing the lives of hundreds of animals every year.”

“Just as sobriety cleansed and elevated me, so did going vegan.”

“The vegan transformation I’ve experienced goes way beyond diet. It’s really allowed me to put my spiritual and moral concepts into action on a daily basis.”

“Switching to a vegetable-rich diet is also the single most important thing you can do for the environment.”

“If you want to run like a horse and not look like a house, switch to veggie burgers.”

“One day, humans will look back and view the treatment of animals in the early twenty-first century as barbaric and the mark of a primitive society.”

Wow.

Only three more quotes needed before we have our very own Veg 10 Commandments.

Keeley Hazell is posing with her kitty in one of PETA’s anti fur ads, reminding everyone that, “when it comes to experiencing pain and suffering, we are all animals.”

“Once you learn how the fur trade treats animals, it’s impossible to think of wearing fur as sexy or glamorous,” Keeley said. “I believe that killing animals for vanity is wrong.”

Keeley has the potential to influence many fashionistas as she manages her own modeling agency.

“I always make a point of telling stylists at shoots that I won’t wear fur. It’s never been a problem after all, everyone from Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood to H&M and Topshop have no-fur policies,” she added. “I like to support designers who are able to create fashionable and popular clothes without getting blood on their hands.”

Let’s roll out the cruelty-free catwalk!

Jason Schwartzman Never “Bored To Death” With BabyCakes NYC

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, November 19th, 2009 in Actors, Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Premiere Of "Fantastic Mr. Fox" - Arrivals

We’ve heard before the Bored To Death star Jason Schwartzman loves Erin McKenna‘s NYC bakery, Babycakes.

Tribecafilm.com recently spoke with Schwartzman who confirmed BabyCakes was still his baby, along with some other New York hot spots.

“Oh, my God! Well, Babycakes is heaven on earth, shall we say? I love the cupcakes and the food and the cookies and, in fact, Babycakes always sends me cookies when it’s the Super Bowl for my guests and stuff, but what I also love about Babycakes is their M.O., like the way Erin McKenna (who owns it) did it—she had a dream and made it come true. It’s really inspiring.”

“So besides Babycakes, my other favorite places are—you know the store Opening Ceremony? What I like about Opening Ceremony is, I don’t particularly look great in all those clothes, but it’s nice because it’s a place where it’s kind of going to like an art house movie theater, where you can just see lots of different movies and see what lots of people are up to and what they’re thinking… I mean, they have very wearable clothes, but they have extremes of all different kinds of things—things that are very forward and very beautiful and great designers that you wouldn’t see in other places. So what I like about it is just going through there and flipping through the clothes and saying, Wow, so this person had this idea to take this color, put it with that color, and stitch it like that…”

Film Forum is another place, and I like the place teany [a vegan restaurant and tea shop co-owned by Moby, currently closed because of a fire]…. I’d say Babycakes, Opening Ceremony, Other Music, and I like Southside Guitars and Rivington Guitars.”

David Tennant Heart Stopping Sandwich

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 in Actors, Not So Vegetarian.

David Tennant

We’ve heard of some pretty disgusting meaty combinations before, but Doctor Who star David Tennant has a sandwich that makes us hurl.

During a recent radio interview, David mentioned he likes a processed meat and peanut butter delight.

“It’s an unusual combination – and not particularly good for you. You get really cheap white bread and smear it thick with peanut butter.

No, it’s always best to pass up white and go for whole grain. But it gets worse.

“Then you get those sausages that are really nasty processed meat and covered in shrink-wrapped U-shapes. You slice them into little discs and sink them into the peanut butter…”

Sausages and nasty processed meat? It’s like an increased risk for cancer and heart disease inside a bun.

“It makes quite an appealing kind of sandwich.”

“It is very dirty. You never have it more than once in a 10-year lifespan or your heart will stop.”

Once in a 10-year lifespan?

At least David’s got some things right.

Meatless Mouthful: Nellie McKay Activism Icons

Only Make Believe Celebrates 10th Anniversary - Inside

“I like [deceased animal-rights activist and actress] Sandy Dennis. I like how both she and Doris Day not only fight for animals in a larger sense but also took them in at home. I was just looking at pictures of Billie Holiday and her dog. I like the thing, or at least the idea, of doing things for some other creature or person. It’s a very noble idea. I’m not sure it gets you anywhere, but I can kind of dig that domestic scene. I like how [comedian] Dick Gregory started out focusing on civil rights and became an animal-rights activist. I like how Alice Walker not only fights for civil rights and feminism – which is a difficult blend to pull off because it’s the whole divide-and-conquer thing; everyone’s always trying to pit activists against each other or make it seem like they’re fighting separate or conflicting battles – but she not only fights for civil rights and feminism but animal rights, too. It’s great.”

Selfridges Drops Foie Gras From Shelves–Geese Dance Everywhere

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, November 16th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink.

Foie Gras Peta Protest - London

After two years of targeted campaign efforts by animal rights groups, Selfridges–one of the biggest supermarket chains in the UK–has agreed to take foie gras off its shelves.

Yay! Yay and triple yay!

Foie gras is produced when geese are force fed so much their livers swell, resulting in severe pain and discomfort.

Sir Roger Moore has been a major voice in the campaign to end foie gras, and even agreed to buy the entire stock on the shelves if Selfridges discontinued the product.

No word if 007 is writing a big check to Selfridges, but we’re thinking the store just came to its senses.

After all, it doesn’t take a secret agent to know the only creatures that should be “stuffed” are the humans who voluntarily do so during the holidays.

Heidi and Spencer show off their new book, How to Be Famous , while catching a flight at LAX

Heidi Montag was soaking up the attention from the cameras as she made her way through LAX airport and showed off her new book co-written with husband Spencer Pratt, How To Become Famous.

There are many ways to become famous, but there’s one certain way to be infamous–wearing real fur!

People will think you’re cruel and heartless, plus your football player boyfriend will definitely dump you.

But Heidi has no worries about her fleeting fame, because she knows the only way to go is faux, right?

Is Heidi notorious for wearing a real fur vest?

Or is she keeping cool by faking it for the animals?

Chris Christie New Jersey Governor Urged To Go Vegan By PETA

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, November 16th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Politicians.

Governor Elect Chris Christie defeats Governor Jon Corzine

People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)  is chasing the pleasantly plump again, this time switching their target from women to politicians.

Chris Christie, governor of New Jersey, is the latest notable urged to go veg in hopes he will lose a few pounds that were sometimes in as much debate as his policies during the election.

Christie has been urged to go vegan for 30 days.

“The best thing that governor elect Christie can do to help himself, the environment, and animals on factory farms — and the best way for him to serve as an example to all New Jersey residents — is to go vegan, at least for 30 days,” PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman said.

Going veg can be great for Christie, the animals and the environment, and we’re glad PETA chose to tastefully request the governor reconsider his dietary habits without making him the subject of ridicule.

With so much health related legislation (health care, school nutrition) being revamped, there’s no better time than ever for Christie to show his constituents how serious he is about making the Garden State the fittest in the 50.
