Cloris Leachman Reveals What She Could Have Worn For Gene Hackman

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 in Actresses, Reality TV.

If you’ve heard enough about Cloris Leachman’s epic sex with Gene Hackman (arrgh…doesn’t it bring thoughts of your grandmother telling this story?), here’s some news that provides a little less TMI.

Cloris recently unveiled her PETA vegetarian ad in Times Square.

The “Let Vegetarianism Grow on You,” ad features Cloris clad in only red cabbage and leaf lettuce. You can view a behind the scenes video on PETA’s blog.

Wonder if she wore something like this for Gene…no, no, no. Remove images from thought processes.

We’re completely siked that Cloris is stripping down to her lettuce leaves in the name of vegetarianism. Plus, she makes a great face for the argument that a veg diet can help you grow old gracefully. The former Dancing With The Stars contestant is 82 years young and still shakin’ it.

We won’t ask questions about her current sex life, but it’s safe to say she hasn’t aged there either. Go Clo!

Amazing Race’s Mike White Went Two Days Without Solid Food

The Amazing Race has a history of not being a very kind race for vegetarians, and this season’s show proved no different.

Mike White was the poster boy for veganism on the show. His father and race partner, Mel, told Buddy TV.com Mike had a hard time finding vegan food.

“Mike is a vegan, and there was hardly any food that he could eat along the way and he didn’t compromise, so there were times where he hadn’t eaten for two days, anything solid,” Mel White said.

Mike White is a successful writer, who’s credits include Nacho Libre and School of Rock.

Last year, vegetarian contestant Terence Gerchberg attempted to eat sheep in an eating challenge, but lost-both the contest and his ability to keep the food down.

A vegetarian last year. A vegan this year. Clearly this isn’t something novel to Amazing Race, nor is a meatless eater novel to reality TV. Is it time the producers of these shows make reasonable accommodations for contestants with dietary preferences?

Lush

The Canadian Seal Hunt is never a pleasant topic to cover and it’s expected that the current hunt this year will kill over 300,000 seals.

Lush Cosmetics, a company adored by several celebs, such as Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, and Jude Law, offers cruelty-free cosmetics to animal lovers and is now extending its business principles in an effort to curb the seal hunt.

From the Lush website:

“We believe that the consumer has the ability to make powerful choices everyday and this is why we are reaching out to you, our customer, to help end the Canadian Commercial Seal Hunt. Most of you shop with LUSH not only because we make wonderful handmade products for your bath, hair and body but also because of who we are and what we believe in. We believe in making products by hand, using fresh ingredients, not testing on animals, supporting our communities and protecting the planet.”

“Governments around the globe, including the US, have spoken out against Canada’s seal hunt. The seal hunt is essentially government sanctioned cruelty to animals. Recent polls show that nearly 69% of Canadians and nearly 80% of Americans are opposed to the seal hunt. Yet, the government continues to spend millions of Canadian taxpayers dollars to help support it.”

Lush has drafted an online petition that will be sent from Lush’s headquarters to the Prime Minster of Canada. So far, over 9,000 signatures have been collected!

“Eat Green. Because food production causes the most damage to the planet. So eat as many plant based foods as possible. Ease away from the meat and dairy. Move towards the whole grains and vegetables and beans and tempeh and all the yummy things out there. I have a book coming out in October called The Kind Diet. It will show you how to eat the most delicious food on the planet but also [keeping it] green. Every little bit makes a difference so the more vegetarian meals you have the better.”

A scruffy Jared Leto heads home after dining at West Hollywoods Katsuya restaurant

Jared Leto was spotted hanging out at LA hot spot Bardot and enjoying some late night vegan grub!

A source said the actor and rocker, “chilled in the lounge with a couple of buddies.”

If you recall us telling you, Leto played the role of spider rescuer at a party for Proposition 2 that Olivia Wilde attended. When a huge, black spider was aiming for musician Moby’s head during his performance, Leto didn’t hesitate to rush in and, instead of killing it, place it back on the ground.

Speaking of bars, how easy is it to find good vegan grub there? A bar in Hollywood may be more likely to have vegan fare, but everywhere else? Have you been able to find good veg food at 2:00 AM to munch on while you sip your vegan Heineken?

Pamela Anderson, Richie Rich Do Cruelty-Free Muse Fashion Line

Richie Rich - Runway - Fall 09 MBFW

Pamela Anderson’s dreamed up cruelty-free fashion line is almost here!

Anderson has teamed up with fashion designer Richie Rich to create a line of environmentally friendly and animal-free shoes and casual clothing that includes hooded tops, skirts, and swimwear as part of a special line of the Muse brand.

If Pamela had it her way, she wouldn’t wear any clothing.  Luckily, she thought of the rest of us who can’t prance around naked at work all day and is making it easier to have an ethical closet.

“I really don’t like to wear clothes,” Pamela said. “I would rather go naked. But I love Richie’s designs, so I agreed to be part of Muse.”

Richie Rich, part of fashion duo Heatherette, said of Pamela, “Pam is an outdoorsy and summer kind of girl who I have been friends with forever. We share the same wild and crazy aesthetic. And she has long been my inspiration. Even though Pam prefers not to wear clothes, she looks great in sexy dresses. She reminds me of Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot.”

Pamela expressed interest in having her own shoe line after learning her favorite pair of boots, Ugg boots, were made of sheepskin.

The new cruelty-free Muse line is set to debut this summer.

Montel Williams’ Daughter, Wyntergrace, Wants Veggie School Lunches

Healthy School Lunches

Healthy School Lunches

If you were vegetarian in high school, the best thing you could hope  for at lunchtime was a chance cholesterol fest fried cheese sticks were available in the Ala-Carte line. If you were vegan…didn’t everybody wonder why you were such a skinny kid?

Montel Williams’ daughter, Wyntergrace Williams, is partnering with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine to change that.

A vegetarian for three years now, the 14 year old even persuaded her mother to go veg (hello? Montel? What gives?)

In middle school, the lack of veg options made her want to go back to classes, so she urged the school to make additions to their menu. It worked. Now it’s time to work on Congress.

You can visit Healthyschoollunches.org and sign the petition telling congress students deserve more vegetarian and vegan items on the menu, including non-dairy beverages that aren’t soda pop.

Jonathan Safran Foer Book Will Feature Farmers In Meat Industry

Novelist Jonathan Safran Foer, best known for his book, Everything Is Illuminated, has a non-fiction book coming out in October and he revealed to NYU local some secrets about its contents.

“Yeah, so it’s a whole book about meat, basically. The premise is that I have been an on and off vegetarian since I was a kid, sometimes very off, sometimes very on. But never really all too informed about my decisions. I just based them more on intuitions or instincts. But when my wife became pregnant and I thought about having to make these decisions on someone else’s behalf, I took it pretty seriously and wanted to make good decisions, especially because they can be hard, difficult– they can create awkward situations. So I spent about a year going to farms all over America, talking to farmers and learning what I could and writing about.”

When Foer was “on” he recorded a video where he shared his thoughts on vegetarianism. He said the hardest place to be a vegetarian was in the Ukraine. Other than that experience, he said he “just can’t imagine it being easier to be a vegetarian.”
