Vega training: part one of four from Brendan Brazier on Vimeo.

Brendan Brazier is a vegan Ironman triathlete who invented the Vega nutrition and energy products-completely plant based items that he started making as young as 15 years of age.

He met up with cartoonist and fellow vegan Dan Piraro one day who revealed that when he’s stuck in a creative rut, it helps to go on a long bike ride to get the ideas flowing again.

Brazier receives similar mental charges after running.

“I find it is really helpful when I go for a run,” he said. “I wrote most of The Thrive Diet while I was running. All of the ideas and the thoughts would seem to organize themselves, and when I got home, I would write them down.”

A component of his new book, Thrive Fitness: Mental and Physical Strength for Life, is teaching how exercises like “biking, hiking, in-line skating, rowing, running, speed skating, swimming, and brisk walking” fuel your right brain and release your creativity side.

Take a look at the video Brazier filmed about Vega. You’ll find it comforting to know he eats his own products, chowing down on an energy bar.

Now if you’ll excuse us, we need to go on a hike before posting again.

Chef Heather Mills Gives Vegan Cooking Lessons

Heather Mills Hosts Healthy Meal Cook-A-Thon with students in The Bronx

Heather Mills was a busy woman in New York this past weekend, giving vegan cooking demonstrations and lessons to families and children living in the Bronx.

Before she put on her chef hat, Heather made a stop by “The Today Show.” If you haven’t already watched the video of her chatting with Matt Lauer, Al Roker (who is also a chef), and the crew, it’s something you don’t want to miss.

As part of her ongoing efforts to contribute to her charity to Hunts Point Alliance for Children (HPAC), Heather taught families of children of John V. Lindsay Charter School how to prepare healthy, vegan food.

The meals will also be served at the “No Beef Teen Cafes” run by HPAC and other community organizations. The community Heather is working with is considered to have one of the highest rates of diabetes and asthma and many living in poverty.

“As a mother I see firsthand the benefits of healthy eating and I’m thrilled the families of Hunts Point are embracing these delicious vegan foods that I’ve loved for so many years” Mills said. “Working with these children here is truly rewarding and a lot of fun.”

Last year, Heather donated a million dollars worth of vegan food to Hunts Point Children Alliance.

“I don’t like fur. … My mom had a [fur] jacket from the 50s …. But the concept of buying fur today doesn’t make any sense to me. I’ve seen people in fur coats, and in my wild mind, I’m hoping someone will throw red paint on them!”
—-”Medium” actress Patricia Arquette on animal issues that are important to her. She recently agreed to do the above ad for PETA promoting the spaying and neutering of pets. Throwing paint on fur wearing celebs? Kid Rock ain’t gonna like that comment!

Jamie Oliver Calls Out Brits On Knowledge Of Pig Standards

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, January 11th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Chefs.

Sirius XM Radio Welcomes Jamie Oliver To

British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver made waves in the UK recently for criticizing the quality of foods in his native land from school lunches to the dinner table. Now he wants everyone to understand the conditions pigs endure before they arrive on their plate.

Oliver and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) are calling upon the European Union to set minimum welfare standards for pig farmers and demand more honest labeling of foods that indicate how the pigs were reared. Unlike free-range chicken, there is currently no definition of free range pork.

Throughout the month of January, Oliver will be uncovering investigations revealing how pigs are treated on some farms in the UK, which includes undesirable practices such as castrating pigs without anaesthetic and preventing pregnant animals from moving.

The RSPCA hopes the program, titled “Jamie Saves Our Bacon,” will incite people to start buying pork reared in more ethical environments, such as a similar program by chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall did to increase the sales of chickens reared with higher welfare standards.

Hopefully, Oliver’s attention to the matter will produce a U.S. Prop 2-like overhaul in the UK.

Winter Wonderland For The Animals: A Farm Sanctuary Benefit

“I’m 68, but if you saw me you’d think I’m 45. That’s because I’ve been a vegan for eight years. My wife and I walk every night two miles from this vegan restaurant home. I eat there about four times a week. Something about being a vegan; it’s life-prolonging.”

—Artist Peter Max, in an interview. The vegan eatery he walks from, Candle Cafe, is the casual dining sister restaurant to Candle 79, one of the top eight vegetarian restaurants in the country.

He has great admiration for Dr. Joel Fuhrman, the vegan doctor who influenced singer Alanis Morissette to recently go vegan.

Take It Off Baby! Cloris Leachman Strips Down To Her Lettuce

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, January 11th, 2009 in Actresses, Reality TV.

Thalians 53rd Anniversary Ball - Arrivals

Cloris “Lettuce Leaves” Leachman, the 52 year old vegetarian actress and Dancing With The Stars Contestant, really gets into her greens.

Like Alyssa Milano, Cloris stripped bare-only to cover back up again with a blended red cabbage, beet, and iceberg lettuce dress for the “Let Vegetarianism Grow on You” campaign.

And she gets to drink a margarita while doing so!

“It feels comfortable and fits me too,” she told Access Hollywood. “You realize you feel wonderful…fresh, new, healthy. And you didn’t have to kill any animals to feel this way.”

She said that once you find out about something, you want to tell everyone about it. She feels people still “don’t know” the benefits of vegetarianism and they’re encouraged to eat meat by the meat industries and advertising.

Cloris has two strip shows, so be sure to watch Video 1 and Video 2.

After Ellen

On a recent Top Chef Elimination Challenge, the chefs had it easy-serve up whatever you want that best showcases your talent.

Contestant Carla really wanted to serve a vegetarian dish, but thought not having a protein would make her lose points.

Maybe it’s time for Carla to take a basic nutrition course as well as cooking classes. Although the judges might not be tofu and tempeh fans, there are plenty of plant based proteins that would have made her dish shine like beans, lentils, or whole grain pasta. If vegan was good enough for the Foo Fighters, it most certainly would have impressed the judges that day.

But she settled for tossing scallops into a mint risotto.

This was double elimination night, so Carla, Melissa, and Eugene were put on the front line and Carla was rescued for another week. Saved by the scallop? Nah, she could have shined otherwise.

EXT: AST Dew Tour OCT 19

Professional motocross racer Adam Jones played the role of smart-aleck recently.

The History Channel is hosting Armageddon week and Ryan Leyba at ESPN wanted to get Jones’ opinion on how the world will come to an end.

Leyba: I’d like to think that it’s going to rain hot dogs, pizza and candy and everyone is going to eat themselves to death.

Jones: Well if hot dogs, pizza and candy fell from the sky the only way the world would end is if we had a massive celebration until we ate so much pizza and hot dogs our hearts stopped beating.

Of course then some vegan burgers would also have to fall from the sky to kill all our non-carnivorous friends.

Not sure if Adam thinks gorging on vegan burgers produces the same health effect as the real thing or not. Maybe he just thinks they’ll fall from the sky and knock us on the head.

If given the choice between death by heart failure from hot dogs or vegan burgers knocking you out cold, a vegan burger asteroid has got to be the better option. It’s quick, painless, and you’ll never know what hit you.

It doesn’t matter anyway, because according to Jones, Joaquin Phoenix and Mel Gibson, who would normally be around to save us, will be absent and the aliens will eat us.

All the more reason to be killed by a falling vegan burger. We hear cannibalistic death is horrible.
