Political Plates: Obama-Vegetable Pizza, Dennis Kucinich-Tan Moderate

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 28th, 2008 in Not So Vegetarian, Politicians.

Democratic Candidates Attend DNC Fall Meeting

It’s good to keep up on political issues, whether you like any of the candidates or not. You should be studying energy and immigration policies, how each are planning to solve the high-priced gas issue, and whether McCain likes pepperoni or vegetable pizza.

Yes, that right. You need to know what the politicians are eating!

Vegan Dennis Kucinich is said to favor food of the same color-moderate tan. Of course this sounds as if someone is obviously poking fun at his vegan preferences of hummus, pasta, and pad thai.

McCain may be be furthest from the vegan politician, and not just in terms of views. One of his favorite foods include pepperoni pizza. And we’re not talking about the soy kind. According to the Chicago Sun Times, he is also a big fan of the very unveggie B.L.T.

Executive chef Scot Jones of The Vegiterranean, a vegan restaurant co-owned by him and Pretenders Rocker Chrissie Hynde in Ohio, suggested that regardless of what party you root for, you must admit your favorite politician could probably benefit from some eating improvements.

“The eating habits of both Republicans and Democrats need to change across America,” he said. “People are eating too much saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sugar. The level of juvenile diabetes is absurd. The only way we can start to stop this is if the White House starts thinking about our future.”

Maybe that change is sooner than we think. Obama already wants more veggies for the children. And he also likes vegetable pizza.

While L.A. may seem like the organic and raw food hub in the U.S., not every part of the city fits that description.

In some inner city and African-American communities, for example, fast food restaurants on every corner may outnumber the number of outfits Paris Hilton has for her dogs.

With diseases like diabetes and abdominal obesity hitting the African-American community hard, the outlook may be even more grimmer.

But all is not lost. Recently, the city has seen numerous black owned vegetarian and vegan restaurants open and several African-American celebrities, such as Erykah Badu, Russell Simmons, and Kevin Eubanks have teamed up with PETA to get the veg word out.

The most recent testimony is by retired basketball player John Salley. Go here to view his video. And if you live in southern Cali or are visiting, be sure to give your support and visit some of the black owned vegan restaurants, such as  Vegan Village Café, Stuff I Eat, and Rahel’s.

Some Men Have To Pad Their Pants With Extra “Meat”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 in Actresses.

Pamela Anderson Press Conference

Clearly someone is overcompensating.

Pamela Anderson, actress, KFC protester and animal rights advocate, was holding a press conference in Australia to promote her new reality T.V. show, Pam: Girl On The Loose. All was going well.

One reporter from the audience, who appeared to be nothing more than a starstruck fan as well as a journalist, pulled his pants down and asked Pam to sign his red underwear. Weird. But still all was going well.

Pam signed and as she was finishing up, the journalist pulled out a chicken drumstick from his pants and proceeded to eat it, obviously mocking Anderson for her views on animal rights and KFC. She has recently protested against KFC Australia for its use of factory farmed chickens. She’s already won a battle with KFC Canada and they’ve since agreed to offer a faux vegan chicken sandwich.

But for Anderson, it’s just part of the job.

“This is what happens,” she said.  “See, I create this image and this is what happens.”

We can’t think of a reason why a seemingly articulate and intelligent man would resort to such grade school prank tactics. Could it be that some men just feel the need to pad their pants with extra meat?

Meatless Mouthful: Johnny Marr of The Smiths

Virgin Festival By Virgin Mobile 2007 - Show - Day 1

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure – the privilege is mine

Whoa! Even the most angst filled emo teen would probably turn off that one. But for some reason, we have staff that really dig the 80s song, “There is a light that never goes out,” by The Smiths. Quote from guitarist Johnny Marr:

“I’ve been a vegetarian since my teens. It would’ve been pretty tough to be singing Meat is Murder with The Smiths while stuffing down burgers in your spare time.”

OMG! The Alicia Silverstone Eating Tuna Rumor

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 in Actresses, Not So Vegetarian.

Like OMG, did you hear that Tina and Jim broke up, Marissa is pregnant, and Alicia Silverstone was eating tuna?!

Yes, this is how rumors get started people. We don’t know if this one is true or not, but with all the celebs seemingly having two faces lately, one for the veg heads and the other for the omnivores, we’re not so sure anymore.

Alicia Silverstone was reported to have grabbed a…tuna sandwich…while in the company of her husband, Christopher Jarecki, before heading off to a wedding at a private residence. But we have questions about this speculation…

Even after clicking on the pictures and seeing them in large view, we can’t tell what the sandwich is. It’s still in the container and you can’t make out the print. And there’s not one pic of either of them (Christopher is a vegetarian as well) putting anything in their mouths. It could have even been a veggie faux tuna sandwich.

We’re keeping mum on this one and hope our favorite Raw Balls girl didn’t cheat.

Sophie Monk Does Vegetarian Wrong

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, August 26th, 2008 in Actresses, Not So Vegetarian.

KFC has never really “done chickens right,” but it looks like Sophie Monk is doing vegetarian really, really wrong.

The Australian actress, who has worked with PETA (which of course means taken off her clothes) and claims to have been a vegetarian since she was 18, was spotted exiting a Hollywood Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant, complete with bags of what looks to be non vegetarian food goodies in her arms.  And since California isn’t Canada, there’s no way she was carrying the new vegan chicken sandwich.

A few months earlier, she was quoted as saying:

“I think the message to KFC eaters [is that] you should think about what you’re eating. If you’re eating deformed animals that are being induced by hormones, you know, it can not be good for you.”

Maybe she’s not getting her own message.

Yes, KFC has been thanked by vegans, but this isn’t the best way to do it.

Russell Simmons Thanks Kentucky Fried Chicken

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 25th, 2008 in Authors, Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Alicia Keys Honored At

Russell Simmons has become the latest vegan celebrity to bite into Kentucky Fried Chicken’s new vegan faux chicken sandwich, which currently is only available in Canada.

He was one of many stars who worked with PETA to convince KFC to treat its chickens better before sending them off the slaughter. As part of the deal, KFC now offers a vegan chicken sandwich.

“As I bit into the delicious un-chicken and lettuce wrap, I remembered how frustrating and seemingly unfruitful mediating those talks between KFC, their supplier Yum Brands, and PETA were.”

“I have long been concerned with promoting better eating habits for myself, my family, my community and the planet. I am saddened by the fact that the most accessible and affordable food to low income communities is fast primarily unhealthy food. Therefore, I view KFC’s Canadian launch of this new vegan sandwich as the first step toward a more compassionate KFC and hope it will be made available here in the United States for all to enjoy.”

“If each one of us has a more watchful eye where we step, we will create a new earth where the abuse of the planet, the animals, and each other will be less prevalent. For that I thank KFC in Canada for making a conscious effort to support the growth of this new earth.”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 25th, 2008 in Actresses.

2006 Summer Television Critics Association Press Tour

Lisa Bonet and daughter Zoe Kravitz were recently spotted snacking at a vegan restaurant in NY. Bonet will be joining the cast of ABC’s Life on Mars on October 9th.

We expect she’s been pretty busy lately, which is why she took a break from acting not so long ago. The latest addition to the family, Lola Iolani Momoa, is only 13 months old!

Those of us who grew up watching T.V. in the 80s remember Bonet playing Denise Huxtable on The Cosby Show, as well as A Different World.
