You’ve seen those commercials for “Happy Cows” sponsored by the California Milk Advisory Board where cows are seen roaming freely in the pasture, females get a chance to gossip while the bulls attempt to speak French in hopes procreating before slaughter time.

Not everyone agrees with the idyllic picture portrayed by the CMAB and Big Love actress Ginnifer Goodwin has written her thoughts to the Federal Trade Commission regarding what animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says are deceptive practices in these campaigns.

“In show business, we often have good reason for making people believe things that aren’t true, but there is no excuse for the CMAB’s misrepresentation of the milk industry,” writes Goodwin. “[C]onsumers deserve better than to be fed cheerful lies about ‘happy cows.'”

Goodwin goes on to say that the reality is most cows in California are confined in crammed spaces filled with dirt and their own excrement, and suffer udder infections as a result of being forced to produce unnatural amounts of milk induced through administering drugs.

“Heading to lunch w/a friend to a vegan place I’ve been wanting to try-will let you know how it is! Then rehearsals….”

Luckily, Shannon wasn’t too full and overwhelmed not to Tweet about the experience.

“Lunch was awesome! Went to Candle 79 on the Upper East side-amazing food-met the owners-they’re very sweet!”

Candle 79 is an upscale vegetarian restaurant in New York City that serves as the sister restaurant of the more casual Candle Cafe.

The restaurant that’s been featured in prestigious publications such as Time, Vegetarian Times, Forbes and VegNews was established in 2003 as the demand for good vegetarian food grew.

Daryl Hannah & Hilary Shepard Promote The Game Liebrary

Daryl Hannah recently spoke at the Project Green Summit that benefited the Texas Trees Foundation and the North Texas Clean Air Coalition.

Hannah, a longtime vegetarian and unlike Al Gore, is not afraid to bring up the subject of not eating meat to protect the planet.

Oooh. Did we just bust on Al Gore?

“The meat industry puts out more carbon emissions than the transportation industry,” Hannah said. “Even giving up meat for a weekend, helps.”

Hannah warned against getting off the hook with carbon offsets and offered ways people could green their life directly.

“It is less important to offset and more important to ask the question: Do I need so much stuff? We need re-evaluate our lifestyles…for our own health and our kids’ future. And we’ll save money in the long run. ”

Hannah added that you should “get the poisons out of your house,” and ensure your cleaning and cosmetic products are environmentally friendly and biodegradable.

Being a good looking environmentalist has its perks.

Daryl said that when she was recently arrested for protesting, cops asked to have their pictures taken with her.

Hope she made them promise to recycle and give up meat one day of the week.

Linda Blair Dog Charity Threatened By California Wildfires

AMPAS Tribute To Dick Smith The Godfather Of Special Makeup Effects

A few days ago we told you how the cat sanctuary housing Michael Jackson‘s tigers Thriller and Sabu was in the path of the California wildfires.

Now, we learn another animal charity is threatened by the blazes.

Linda Blair runs a dog sanctuary in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles, the World Heart Foundation.

She’s getting anxious about the fires spreading and coming closer to the grounds.

“The last 24 hours have been incredibly scary and we are no where near being out of the woods. We have been informed that the containment dates for this fire, at this time, are going past Labor Day (07Sept09). This means we’ve got a ways to go (sic) before we aren’t on edge any more.”

Linda is asking for help if the fires reach the sanctuary.

“In terms of the evacuation itself – we are on pins and needles waiting for the word. Our biggest fear is getting the orders in the middle of the night when everyone is asleep. If you are willing to help load dogs in crates and transport to our evacuation spot and don’t mind getting called in the middle of the night please let us know.”

You can follow Linda’s updates on the sanctuary and the fires at lindablairworldheart.org.

Michelle Forbes Can’t Believe Animals Are Sacrificed

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, August 25th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

25th Annual Television Critics Association Awards - Arrivals

Michelle Forbes plays the villainous character Maryann Forrester on HBO’s True Blood.

Forbes’ character may do some barbaric things on the show, but according to Forbes, it’s just based on the “moral construct” of her group.

In other words, everybody’s cool with it!

Forbes, a vegetarian, used this example to explain how she can’t believe people are still eating animals, because based on her moral code, they shouldn’t be.

From blackbookmag.com:

“I do believe that she’s a character that’s all about perspective. If you think that this is an immortal being. She’s been around since the beginning of time. She’s lived in certain periods of our humanity, where there were people who would sit and watch other men tear each other apart for sport. Children were sacrificed. It’s not unheard of in history. In her mind, she’s seen it all. I think what’s great about the storyline is that it challenges our belief system. You and I can sit here in 2009 and say it’s outrageous that someone would sacrifice humans. My belief system, as a vegetarian, can’t believe that animals are being sacrificed. I stand by that in Maryann’s mind, there’s nothing malevolent. She has a different way of looking at the world.”
