Barack’s Daughter Sasha Obama Bringing Veggies To School

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 in Children, Food & Drink, Politicians.

US President-elect Barack Obama enjoys shave ice with friends and family in Hawaii

He wanted more vegetables for the children and now it looks like his daughter will be helping to carry out his wish for the entire Washington D.C. area.

Sasha Obama, Barack’s youngest daughter, is attending Sidwell Friends School in D.C. where part of the children’s education is to teach them about helping those less fortunate.

One such program is making soup for Martha’s Table, which according to their website, is designed to “help at-risk children, youth, families and individuals in our community improve their lives by providing educational programs, food, clothing, and enrichment opportunities.”

Sasha will be bringing fresh veggies to school which will be used to make soup that will be delivered to Martha’s Table.

From the Sidwell Friends website:

Each Wednesday, children bring a vegetable from home as their contribution to the makings of a 50 lb. pot of soup. Classes take turns collecting and cutting the vegetables, which are then delivered to Martha’s Table by a parent volunteer. The children are reminded to bring their Wednesday vegetable by painting a magnetic tile to take home to place on their refrigerators.

Worst Veggie Stories Of 2008

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 31st, 2008 in Chefs, Male Musicians, Male Singers, Politicians, Reality TV.

If Newton’s 3rd Law applies to news, then if we bring you the Best Of Veggie 2008, ultimately, we have to discuss the worst. And they’re really bad. But in order of fairness, here goes…

#5: Andre 3000 Is Cheap-After bending over backwards to get him a vegan meal prepared, Andre’s waiter didn’t even get tipped! The carnis already say we’re weird and demanding. Now they’re gonna call us cheap. Thanks Andre.

#4:Amazing Race Sheep Butt Eating Incident-Vegetarian Terence Gerchberg was athletic, smart, and a promising part of the duo Terence and Sarah on Amazing Race this past season. So sad that he got taken out by sheep ass.

#3: Paula Deen’s Ham Delivery-25,000 pounds of pork nastiness delivered in the name of charity. At least we got Heather Mills donating veggie burgers to balance off this Karma.

#2: Gordon Ramsay Vegetarian Children Nightmare-The celebrity chef said his worst fear is one of his children coming home and telling him he or she is a vegetarian. In fact, this would cause Ramsay so much distress, he said he would promptly put them on a fence and electrocute them. Nice.

#1: Sarah Palin Thanksgiving Turkey Slaughter-Palin gave the meaning of “know where your food is coming from” a whole different twist as she did an interview with turkeys getting killed just over her shoulder. Wonder how many converted (to vegetarianism) after seeing this, uh, miracle?

Chelsea Clinton Has Vegetarian Menu Named After Her

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, December 30th, 2008 in Food & Drink, Politicians.

The School Of American Ballet Hosts The Third Annual Winter Ball

Avril Lavigne may think she’s something with the pizza named after her in her hometown in Canada, but she’s got nothing on Chelsea Clinton, who’s got an entire vegetarian menu with her brand on it.

When her father former President Bill visited a tandoori restaurant located in the Maurya Sheraton Hotel in India, he said he wished he had two stomachs, according to the New York Times. His flattery got him a menu as well, but he’s on the meat list.

If you recall, Chelsea went vegan during her White House dwelling days and even took professional cooking lessons before going off to Standford where she learned to make awesomely delicious vegan meals like Thai Spiced Sweet Potato Soup With Gingered Bok Choy.

Sarah Palin To PETA: Don’t Be Throwing Snowballs At Me!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, December 25th, 2008 in Politicians.

Vice Presidential Candidate, Governor Sarah Palin, spoke to a huge crowd at the Henderson Pavilion in Henderson, Nevada

Don’t make her call Joe the Plumber!

Remember that Holiday Snowball Throwing game we told you about where you could pelt fur wearing folks for points?

PETA, the organization who created  the game, received a phone call a couple of days ago from someone claiming to be from Governor Palin’s office. The caller demanded PETA take the game down or face a lawsuit.

Governor Palin, an avid hunter and a foe to many animal rights supporters, is just one of the several celebrities making a guest appearance, including fur wearing Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

PETA blogged about this incident and used the opportunity to further poke fun at Palin:

“In real life, the moose and other animals Ms. Palin blows to smithereens don’t stand a chance. But, hey, our game is virtual and nonviolent. To be honest, I’m not quite sure why Sarah is so mad about the game anyways. Wielding a gun and decked out in a sexy bikini and pageant ribbon, I’d think she’d be quite proud of how PETA’s portrayed her.”

No, no, no, you just don’t understand, PETA. If you had thrown snowballs at her from airplanes, then she would be proud. But don’t take their word for it. Have a look. Sexy? Yay or Nay?

After a consult with PETA’s legal team, it was determined the game is “protected parody” or “fair game” (no pun intended) and the game is here to stay.

Lauren Bush is the niece of George W. If you don’t know who Chelsea’s mom and dad are…you probably haven’t been awake enough during these past years to even vote in our poll. Relations to the right, relations to the left, both know what’s right when it comes to putting vegetarian food on their plates. So who would you…

Something to make you laugh. George H.W. Bush (41st Pres and current Bush’s daddy) once said, “I do not like broccoli. And I haven’t liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I’m President of the United States and I’m not going to eat any more broccoli.” Speak for yourself, George, but this kitten knows what good! He’s a Purina Animal All-Star who loves his broccoli-and gets a little testy when you try to take it away from him.

Sarah Palin Has No Worries As Tom Turkey Gets Beheaded

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, November 21st, 2008 in Not So Vegetarian, Politicians, Videos.

Sarah Palin is truly into animal horror shows. From shooting wolves from planes to toting her Real Women Hunt Moose bag, it’s safe to say she won’t be honored by any animal rights groups soon.

Her latest stunt involves giving a media interview live with turkeys being slaughtered in the background. What’s even creepier is when she was asked if that was an appropriate backdrop, she replied, “No worries.”

Meatless Mouthful: Dennis Kucinich Another Non-Judging Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, November 16th, 2008 in Meatless Mouthful, Politicians.

House Oversight Committee investigates AIG in Washington

“I don’t believe that you can tell anyone what to eat. I think it’s the worst thing in the world to start to tell people—to start to dictate—choices of food. You just can’t do that. But you can show people that if they make choices in a certain way, healthy choices, it might improve the environment. It’s an educational process.”

—-Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), in an interview with VegNews Magazine. The vegan congressman has just earned his seventh consecutive Congressional win this month and boy, has he been busy during his terms.

He’s worked towards food safety, better agricultural practices, and made sure more funds were available to enforce the Animal Welfare Act, among other things.

Like Moby, he thinks you can talk the talk, but not force the walk. Who would’ve thought a suit wearing politician in D.C. and a singer living in New York City’s Little Italy would have so much in common?
