Pita Pit Spicy Black Bean Patty

In the words of a chain of restaurants featuring fresh, made to order pita sandwiches, “There’s a new protein in town.”

Vegetarian Star can only say, “Yum, yum and triple yum!”

Pita Pit, which has over 100 restaurants in major cities and college towns across the U.S., has put a vegan black bean veggie patty on its list of already friendly veggie pitas like the falafel, the garden and the hummus.

Joshua Gomez, who plays Chuck’s co-worker Morgan Grimes on the NBC television series about a computer store geek who accidentally downloads government secrets to his brain, “Chuck,” is a vegetarian in real life.

So when it came time to devour the meatball sub sandwich from Subway presented to him during a scene on “Chuck  Vs. The Leftovers,” we got a little nervous when he was about to chow down. Was the sandwich stuffed with wheatballs instead? Luckily (or perhaps a little unluckily for Morgan), his dinner is interrupted by an unexpected customer carrying a weapon.

Subway doesn’t offer much for vegans except a Veggie Delight with no cheese on Italian bread. If you’d like to see that change, maybe you should look into Compassion Over Killing’s “We Love Subway” campaign.

Grand Opening Of Thomas Keller's Bouchon In Beverly Hills

The Animal Protection & Rescue League has organized a protest against celebrity chef Thomas Keller outside his three restaurants because he serves foie gras.

Several other animal rights groups, Animal Protection & Rescue League, Orange County People for Animals, In Defense of Animals, and Compassion Over Killing have launched a campaign about foie gras and will be outside Keller’s restaurants holding banners depicting the conditions inside Hudson Valley Foie Gras, Keller’s supplier.

Foie gras is produced by force feeding geese so much their livers swell several times their normal sizes.

The metal pipes placed in their throats for feeding often injure the digestive tract as well.

“As a veterinarian, I find foie gras to be a disease rather than a delicacy,” states Elliot Katz, DVM, President of IDA. “The liver’s function is to process toxins, and a liver in this grossly enlarged state from force feeding cannot function properly.”

The protests will be held at the following restaurants on Saturday, May 8.

Per Se, 10 Columbus Circle, New York, NY 10019 – Time: noon
Bouchon, 235 N. Canon Dr. Beverly Hills, CA 90210 – Time: 7:30pm
French Laundry, 6640 Washington St., Yountville, CA 94599 – Time 7pm

For the month of December, DC Vegan is hosting fundraisers for the D.C. vegetarian and animal welfare group, Compassion Over Killing.

The holiday season is about giving, and there’s no better way to give back than to promote a cruelty-free and healthier lifestyle for everyone by helping COK raise money to promote vegetarian education and awareness.

Three events are still on the agenda for December, including the Save the Date: COK’s Annual Holiday Fundraising Party!, COK Benefit at Sticky Fingers Bakery and COK Benefit at Java Green.

The goal is to raise $1,000 dollars for the month.
