Ed Begley Jr. Says Being Veg Can Help You Move Up The Ladder

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 in Actors, Environment-Eco-Green.

National Resources Defense Council 20th Anniversary CelebrationActor and environmentalist Ed Begley Jr. will be the Keynote speaker at the Carnegie Science Awards in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this Friday.

Ed plans to tell everyone to get involved with science, as awareness of the discipline can help the environment tremendously.

“If we had a good scientific awareness … I think the environment would fare better,” Begley said, according to pittsburghlive.com.

He cited numerous activities he took up to save money as a young adult that inadvertently lessened his environmental impact, including going vegetarian, riding a bike, and recycling. Doing these activities, he claimed, can really help you “move up the ladder.”

“When you save money from that, as I did, then you can move up the ladder and maybe buy some attic insulation, double-pane windows or a rain barrel,” he said. “It took me 20 years to be able to afford solar panels.”

Go veg now and in the next 20 years you might be able to show off your flashy solar panels to your envious neighbors.

Nia Vardalos No Longer Has Sleazy Hookups With Cheese

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

Fox Searchlight Pictures Presents My Life In Ruins - After PartyActress Nia Vardalos, best known for hitting it big playing Toula Portokalos in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, was a vegetarian for over a decade before “her family wore her down.”

Now it appears as if she’s returning to her veggie roots and has even told cheese she’s not going to a late night booty call with it anymore.

She recently told People about her secret to losing 40 pounds.

“I broke up with cheese. I always say like cheese keeps calling me and trying to get me to meet at a cheap motel but I’m really committed to just staying single for awhile.”

Although she said she did 50 different things to help her shed some of herself, giving up cheese was the big factor.

You go girl. And don’t go back to it. Cheese never loved and cared about you anyway.

So we never have enough posts for the guys. Vegan cosmetics, fashion, and girly stuff often dominates the site, but as of today dudes, no more complaining.

Feast your eyes on Ida Ljungqvist, the 50th Playmate of the Year, as well as the first African-European to take the honor.

Although the meat on her body is in all the right places (hey, don’t call us sexist, it’s for the guys), she doesn’t put any into her body.

“I’m a size zero. But I carry my weight in the lower body, so I exercise moderately and I’m a vegetarian,” she said, according to Foxnews.com. “I take Bonnie my Chihuahua hiking with me a lot and I do lots of walking. But I’ve never believed in pushing it too hard. It should never be a chore to exercise; you have to enjoy it or else don’t do it all.”

This little lady is also brilliant. She speaks three languages fluently-English, Swedish and Swahili-and has traveled with her Swedish father across the globe to work with UNICEF.

No, we don’t have her number. Please don’t email us for it.

20th Century Fox World Premiere of The X-Files: I Want To BelieveGillian Anderson would like the X Files on animal abuse in testing laboratories closed forever.

The actress has personally written a letter to every Member of the European Parliament (MEB), asking they take steps necessary to protect animals involved in research.

The Parliament is considering a law that could improve the conditions of laboratory animals in Europe.

Gillian is insistent that the law contain the following protections for animals:

• Promote effective, humane and relevant methods to replace animal experiments. This must be at the heart of EU policy.

• Ensure that no experiments are conducted on animals unless a licence is issued by government authorities in advance (this is already the law in many European countries and is vital for animals’ protection).

• Ensure that no animal is ever exposed to severe, prolonged pain.

• Make real progress towards ending the use of all non-human primates in experiments and take decisive

Joanne Rose Featured As Vegetarian Elite

Joanne Rose is featured in Supreme Master TV’s “Vegetarian Elite” video series.

Joanne is an author who’s written both a vegan children’s book, Tommy Tofu Saves The Day, and a sketch comedy called “Date A Vegan.”

“Date A Vegan” humorously exaggerates how vegans behave.

“I became a vegan in 1994,” says Joanne in the video. “I was raised a meat eater. But that’s not through anything else than just conditioning. That’s what we’re used to. Then it was in a cooking class in high school that we learned what a vegan was. We heard about a vegetarian and a vegan. And they said that a vegan just eats plant food. And I was sitting there in the kichen in the cooking class thinking, “Eats plant food?!”  But then it was only a matter of time I was vegetarian. I knew to make that decision-the direct link between animal cruelty and killing of animals.”

Alicia Silverstone Recommends Farmers’ Markets For Cheap Veg Eating

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 30th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

2009 Heart Of Green Awards

Emily Deschanel is not the only vegan actress to enjoy her local farmers’ market.

Alicia Silverstone recently interviewed with Glamour Magazine where she answers some questions about her vegan diet and lifestyle.

It’s no secret that fresh, organic produce and other staples of a vegetarian or vegan diet aren’t always cheap. Alicia gave some tips for making the transition easier on your pocketbook.

“The best way to save money is to go to a Farmer’s Market. Buy seasonal produce [that is grown locally]. It’s really, really cheap. I spend anywhere from $40 to $60 a week on produce. And that feeds my husband, my dogs, and me. My other grocery bill is a little bit more expensive, but that’s because I like making decadent desserts.”

“I would say to people who are concerned: I don’t go to the doctor; I don’t buy any prescriptions, antacids, or birth control. I don’t suffer from any illnesses. Consider it an investment for your health. And save money on other things. I look to eBay or Craigslist for deals on things to save money. Also, buy what you can in bulk.”
