Bill Russell Says Vegetarians Cooperative, Carnivores Competitive

Launch Party for Robert Redfords Iconoclasts

Ah, would you like to recommend Tofurky Jurky to the office jerky who everyone tries to avoid?

That might not be such a bad idea as Boston Celtics legend and NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell said being vegetarian made him more friendly and cooperative.

From a recent interview:

Q: Your book talks a lot about male friendship. You thought your intense competitiveness made it difficult for you to have friendships. Are you competitive about everything?

A: No. When I was playing I was, extraordinarily so. But after I retired I was a vegetarian for a couple years, and it’s probably silly but I thought carnivores were very competitive. I thought if I was vegetarian, I would be more co-operative than competitive.

Q: Did it work?
A: Yes, and I was better able to exercise friendship.

Of course we already know being vegetarian doesn’t interfere with the competitive edge of being an athlete, given the highly successful veg men and women out there.

The Telegraph was interviewing Chrissie Hynde when she revealed she was wearing a pair of Stella McCartney faux leather boots.

The price of a Stella shoe can reach up to seven, eight, and nine hundred dollars. Easy for a rock star like Chrissie, but maybe not so much for the rest of us who haven’t released new albums like Break Up The Concrete.

Don’t despair, as Chrissie says, “you can get the cheap junk at the market.”

Sure, cheap synthetic shoes are abundant. But then you have to worry about the chemicals involved in producing them and whether or not someone like your kid sister was gluing them together. And you thought choosing a pair of shoes was all about ensuring they didn’t give you blisters!

Elizabeth Olsen’s got some nice vegan boots for around $250, like the Thriller.

Price still not right? Chuck the boots altogether and pick up some Zoe and Zac shoes from Payless for under $30! They’re made with sustainable and recycled material and some profits go towards planting new trees.  What could be more beautiful, except of course, your feet in them?

Kellie Pickler Sparks Veggie Hate Among Country Folk

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 18th, 2009 in Female Singers.

2009 CMT Music Awards - Arrivals

She hasn’t held her title for even a month and already controversy is happening.

No, Kellie Pickler hasn’t been found in revealing photographs of her chomping on hamburgers after winning PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Contest. But there are some that wish she would.

Amanda Nolz at Beef magazine recently blogged on the Beef Daily blog (Seriously, we’re not kidding. We know you’ll want to bookmark that in your browser as well as subscribe to the Beef Daily e-newsletter.) that Kellie was an example of a country music star who had turned away from country values.

Just like evil Carrie Underwood who donated funds from her American Idol elimination song to the Humane Society, Kellie is ruining everything country. Well, shame on her!

“Well, it’s no secret that I’m not a fan of Carrie Underwood, a vocal vegetarian who actively teams up with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), and you’ve heard me rant and rave about the “Oprah Effect,” where anything Oprah says, the world listens to as fact. It’s unfortunate that others like Kellie Pickler are now following suit. Time and time again, these celebrities stand up and against America’s food producers, heightening an already troubling outlook consumers have on farmers and ranchers.”

“Even though we don’t have fame, fortune and our faces on the cover of magazines, farmers and ranchers have the capability to feed 144 people each year. We have the determination and drive to produce a safe and wholesome product to feed the world. Agriculturalists are truly people to look up to, and today, I challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and tell your story. It’s time we let our voices be heard. Who’s with me?”

Uh, not us. But anyway…

It must be tough for someone from some parts of the U.S. South, farming background or living in the heart of “cattle country” to go against the grain and be veg. Kudos to them.

Are you a cattle rancher kid who went wild and became veg, much to the disappointment of your friends and family?

B-52’s Fred Schneider Still Rocks Without Rock Lobster

The Cinema Society Hosts A Screening Of The Great Buck Howard - Inside

Oooh, how long has it been since you had some Loveshack?

The song, that is, by Fred Schneider and his B-52’s gang. The band that’s been around since the 80s is nowhere near retiring yet, and although Fred’s still singing “Rock Lobster,” he’s not eating any.

The world of touring isn’t nearly as difficult to a vegetarian musician as it was when the band first broke out.

“I eat dairy and eggs, so it’s not as hard as it used to be. America’s finally come to some of its senses.”

The band is currently performing songs live from their most recent album, Funplex.

Fred took German in high school, so if the band decides to do an overseas tour in that part of Europe, language shouldn’t be a barrier to getting good food either.

“Now I can say ‘I don’t eat meat’ and stuff like that in German.”

Wir essen keine Fleisch either!

Oh, yeah. Google Translate does us well!

Meatless Mouthful: Christie Brinkley And Artichokes Go Way Back

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Meatless Mouthful, Models.

Christie Brinkley Chairs the NOFA-NY Organic Food from Farm to Family Lunch

“For most of my life I’ve had a thing for the artichoke, because it was such an exciting vegetable. You could do so much with it. I first saw it on television, on “The Little Rascals.” I had my own artichoke plate, with a place for the heart to sit. To this day I still go crazy for them. But I also eat broccoli every day, it’s like taking a vitamin. And I like leafy green vegetables. But artichokes and I go way back.”

—-Model Christie Brinkley, at a fund-raising luncheon for the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York. Brinkley became vegetarian at 13 and convinced the whole family to follow her lead. She recently starred in a Got Milk? ad.

24th Annual Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - Arrivals

Dennis Kucinich is about to get congressional vegan style!

Vegan Earth Day is approaching on June 21st, and the vegan representative of Ohio plans to deliver a statement about it to the floor of Congress. The event will be televised by C-Span and documented permanently in the Congressional Record.

All eyes will be on you Dennis and it’s recorded forever. But no pressure or anything.

According to a statement made by Kucinich’s Press Secretary Nathan White to Bob Linden of the radio program, Go Vegan With Bob Linden, Kucinich is “crafting a proclamation in support of VEGAN EARTH DAY and its goal of increased global awareness of environmental, health, economic, and other benefits of adopting the vegan lifestyle.”

This year’s Vegan Earth Day celebration in California will feature firefighter Rip Esselstyn, author of the Engine 2-Diet, as well as his father, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, who inspired Rip to go veg.

Richie Rich Tells How Pamela Anderson Vegan Clothing Was Born

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 in Actresses, Fashion.

Pamela Anderson and Richie Rich Announce New Fashion Brand Muse

We brought you the news that Pamela Anderson and Richie Rich have collaborated to create a line of vegan clothing under the brand MUSE.

Now, we’re learning more from Rich just how the line was envisioned.

Strangely enough, it was a visit to a craft store that spawned the idea.

“A few years ago in Vegas, she had a T-shirt line, so I styled her show,” Rich told New York magazine. “She sent me to Michael’s, a craft store, in a limousine, and she was like, ‘Doll up my line!’ And I did. Glitter, pom-poms, you name it.”

Don’t know if that means the new clothing line will be “glittery” or if the experience lit a light bulb in Rich’s head that made him think, “We should work together.”

Since Pamela is a staunch vegetarian, no fur will be  used in the collection, which Rich said was hard for him.

Hopefully, working with Pamela will rub off on the designer and he’ll see cruelty-free as an easier and much kinder choice in the future.
