The Huffington Post Pre-Inaugural Ball

Blogging and news maniac Arianna Huffington, from the Huffington Post, recently hosted a reception party for poet Elizabeth Alexander.

Although she’s not a vegetarian, Arianna had plenty of non meat hors d’oeuvres for everyone.

Elizabeth Alexander is the poet who composed, “Praise Song For The Day,” for President Barack Obama’s inauguration.

Alexander’s poem can be purchased in a commemorative chapbook edition from Graywolf Press.

History tells us Huffington knows how to plan a good veggie party!

If you recall, the Huffington Post set up a relaxing, time-out suite during the Democatic National Convention that featured vegan hors d’oeuvres and yoga classes.

You can view pictures of the reception for Elizabeth Alexander at MediaBistro.

Rachel Zoe’s Assistant: Vegan Boots Made Of Potatoes, Cauliflower

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, March 21st, 2009 in Environment-Eco-Green, Fashion.

Premiere Of Sony Pictures Classics Sugar - Arrivals

Girls are made from sugar and spice and everything nice, but what about vegan boots? How about potatoes and mashed cauliflower?

At least that’s what celebrity stylist Rachael Zoe’s assistant Brad said at a recent Stella McCartney fashion show the two were attending.

Fashionista landed at Stella’s Fall/Winter show and overheard lots of juicy info, including the fact that Rachael Zoe’s assistant needs to take lessons in vegan materials.

“What you don’t have is the only thing that kept the clothes from looking ten years older than Stella’s usually do – the full leg faux-leather boots. They had me gasping for air, prompted Rachel Zoe’s assistant Brad to say, “Bet they’re made from potatoes and mashed up cauliflower,” and will be every vegan’s dream answer to next season’s number one trend.”

But really, what are vegan boots made of?

Some leather-like boots are  made from PVC, which isn’t very kind to the environment, as it contains chlorine, which produces a chemical called dioxin during the manufacturing process that’s been linked to ailments, like asthma. To get around this, the best ethical designers use PU, or Polyurethane, a gentler synthetic.

There’s also polyester, which can be used in satin-looking materials.

The methods for producing vegan shoes are far less harmful to the planet than producing leather, which can’t degrade easily after being tanned. Plus, there’s all the land used to feed the livestock that could used for better purposes, like, plant crops.

So there  you have it. A brief lesson on the origins of a vegan shoe. Yes, it would be nice if they were made of potatoes and cauliflower. Then all the toenail biters would have something to snack on.

Gwyneth Paltrow Puts Vegenaise Vegan Mayo On Her Turkey

Valentino: The Last Emperor New York Premiere - After Party

If we had a dollar for every time we made fun of Gwyneth Paltrow for her pretending to be a real vegetarian then sneaking the turkey legs under her kitchen table, we’d make more money than what she’s made over the past decade.

We have learned that a recent entry to her online newsletter Poop Goop features a brief interview with her friend Tamra Davis, a film producer and director who, like Gywneth, talks of being “mostly vegetarian.”

Writes Gwyneth:

“We are both mothers of two small children, in the film business, are passionate amateur cooks, have an obsession with Vegenaise, are married to musicians and have a similar food ethos.”

Mmm…At least Gwynnie’s got good taste for vegan mayonnaise. Even if she does baste her Thanksgiving turkey with it.

This could be one of your few chances to snag a recipe featured on Goop that’s actually vegetarian, as Gwyneth is currently featuring Seitan with Lemon Caper Sauce, aka “Dinosaur Meat”.

Hop on over to Goop and check it out!

Kareena Kapoor Playing Love ‘Em, Veg ‘Em, And Leave ‘Em?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 19th, 2009 in Actresses, Bollywood.

We already told you how Ingrid Newkirk of PETA said vegetarians and vegans should date omnivores to bring them over the their side and then dump them to move on and convert someone else.

We even joked that Natalie Portman might be doing this to Rob Pattinson.

But it looks like Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor really follows the rule.

Kareena became vegetarian while dating fellow Bollywood star Shahid Kapoor, but the two later broke up. Kareena and Shahid are still both veg, though, and Shahid even put his dog on a vegetarian diet.

Now, Kareena is involved with a guy who is, in her words, “hard core non-vegetarian, who at every given step would be eating his steak and his roast chicken.” But that’s not affecting her eating habits. From the Times of India:

“I did it completely because I believed in it. It’s because of a book I read and I completely believe in. Nobody has put a dagger to my head. I’ve learnt something from Shahid and that’s something that Saif appreciates and in fact Saif always tells me that “Listen, if now you go back to being a non vegetarian, I’ll loose faith in you as a person.” I’ve traveled the word with Saif and he’s sat across thousands of tables from me and I’ve stuck to my French fries even though I have to put on a kilo on my scale, but I would not go for the roast chicken.”

So Kareena came around on her own. But it looks like her past loves played a role. Will Kareena bring her new man over to the veg side? And will the poor soul be left behind once he gives up his steak and roast chicken?

Britain’s Got Talent Amanda Holden: Low Fat Food Has No Talent!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink, TV Hosts.

Childrens Champions 2009

Who said vegetarians eat lettuce, sprouts, and plain tofu all day?

British actress Amanda Holden became famous for her role as Sarah Trevanion on “Wild at Heart” and is a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.

“I’m vegetarian, but I love my food,” she told the UK Times Online.

“I don’t believe in having low-fat spread in the fridge, and I do indulge in a pudding, and I do like a bit of Stilton when I’m having posh dinners out.”

Her guilty pleasures include “butter” and “wine” but we’re not sure if she necessarily puts those together.

Luckily, she is a natural outdoors gal who would rather jog with her dog than stay cooped up in an artificial gym setting. This exercise routine seems to be working for her, as she ran the London Marathon last year.

Still wearing fur? Maybe you should get yourself professionally evaluated, according to Leona Lewis.

“It’s such an old school way of doing things. I can’t begin to imagine that people who know all these animals have been killed to make a coat can still wear it. There must be something seriously wrong with them.”
