Iron Maiden’s Nicko McBrain Says Hold Those Darn Olives On Pizza!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians.

Sanctum Soho : Launch Party - Inside

Iron Maiden’s drummer Nicko McBrain recently did an interview with Heavy Metal Examiner blogger Mark Morton.

Apparently the guys are known for dining on pizza with some weird toppings, and Morton wanted to investigate this.

McBrain likes a vegetarian pizza, but there’s one vegetable he can do without-olives! You can hold that funny looking cheese, too.

And what is with your penchant for nasty looking pizza?
“Oh, no, no, no, no. Let’s get something right, here. I don’t order that stuff. That is just what they order in for me. And believe you me, there was that one friggin’ pizza – I don’t remember where we were – but it had this funny cheese on it. I looked at this pizza like, “What the f*** is that???”

“Normally, I like a vegetarian pizza, no olives….I can’t stand f***in’ olives! Or, just a regular pizza with a Margherita sauce on it, or whatever. And they send all these exotic pizzas out thinking we’re going to like them. And there’s always a big row about it. But yeah, I was known for eating pizza and Gatorade. What can I say? They should have put some of those wars in there; that’s what should have been filmed! Pizzas flying at the band, and flying at Steve Gadd [tour manager]…hahahaha.”

Russell Simmons Trades Vegan Lobster For Pasta At Teatro Goldini

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Children Uniting Nations 4th Annual National Conference

If school officials need to do anything about the curriculum, they should include more nutrition classes!

Specifically, students should spend an entire semester learning what constitutes vegetarian, vegan, and whatever else in between. Because not knowing is just as bad as not picking out the largest continent on the map!

Russell Simmons recently attended a dinner while taking care of business for his Children Uniting Nations (CUN), a nonprofit for at-risk and foster youth in partnership with his Hip Hop Summit Action Network.

When a publicist found out Simmons was vegan, she stated, “Well, he can eat the lobster.”

Uh, heck no, those lobsters don’t grow in the ground!

It’s understandable not to expect non vegs to know how to make nacho cheese with nutritional yeast, but if it moves in a tank and pinches you when you tick it off, how can you not know that’s not vegan?

Simmons eventually got a vegetable pasta entree prepared for him at Teatro Goldini, but he still had to bend his veganism a little to keep from starving.

“I don’t normally eat pasta because it comes from eggs, but sometimes you have to.”

Yeah, especially when the only other vegan option is lobster.

Elizabeth Berkley Is A Sustainable, Edible Treat

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green.

When the words “edible” and “clothing” are together in a sentence, it usually becomes a cough, cough, adult conversation.

But Treehugger.com says food + clothing = sustainability.

Yes, after you spend a night on the town in your Romain leaf bra, you can nibble on wholesome greens as a midnight snack. Sorta.

Treehugger’s slideshow featuring sustainable, edible clothing and lists none other than the original Lettuce Lady, Elizabeth Berkley.

“Last, and certainly not least is Elizabeth Berkley’s cabbage dress, also done as PETA’s original Lettuce Lady. Berkley sent the ad to restaurants asking them to beef up their vegetarian selections, and Berkley’s dress is one of the few featured here that could probably be easily worn to a ball or other event and just as easily recycled on the compost pile.”

Or toss some raspberry vinaigrette on her and…get your serving of veggies, of course.

Other sustainable, edible outfits Treehugger features are a licorice dress and several chocolate outfits.

35th Annual Peoples Choice Awards - Press Room

The folks at green gossip site, Ecorazzi.com, came up with their list of top 5 vegan celebrities for the year 2009.

Ellen DeGeneres took the #1 spot!

“If I could, I’d write a book called Why Ellen DeGeneres Is Cooler Than PB&J. You see, Ellen has perhaps the most attractive trait any celebrity could posses: the ability to speak-up for the causes she believes in without turning people off. …To thank her for all your compassion and coolness, we offer Ellen the biggest slice of vegan cake we can find and the title of our NUMBER ONE Vegan Celebrity of 2009.”

It’s easy to see why Ellen can’t be beat. She and wife Portia de Rossi received the Humane Society’s Wyler Award for their animal activism. She was a staunch supporter of Proposition 2. She even gives away free vegan goodies on her show.

Hats off to Ellen. Check out the other vegan celebrities to see if your fave made the cut.

Will T.I. Go Naked For PETA’s Anti-Fur Campaign?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 in Fur, Male Singers.

2007 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals

Prison can do a lot for a man. He can get religious, get in shape, even get a college degree while spending time in the Big House.

PETA is hoping rapper and producer T.I. will want to take off his clothes after wearing that gaudy looking jumpsuit for so long as he serves his prison sentence for federal weapons charges.

The animal rights group has written to T.I. asking him to partake in their “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign.

The group heard T.I. asked former inmate Martha Stewart for some advice on how to spend the time behind bars. Since T.I.’s not the crocheting type (or is he?….), PETA suggested another way he could follow in the domestic diva’s footsteps. Martha chose to narrate an anti-fur public service announcement for the group.

“We read you looked to Martha Stewart for advice on how to pass your prison term and come out on top. Did you know that she agreed to narrate an anti-fur public service announcement (PSA) for PETA because she experienced firsthand what it is like for the millions of minks, rabbits, and other animals who are confined to filthy sheds on fur farms? But unlike inmates who are freed when they finish their sentences, these animals are beaten, have their necks broken, are electrocuted, and are often skinned alive for their fur. We hope you follow Martha’s compassionate example and become involved with our anti-fur efforts.”

Will T.I. bare all for the animals? It’s such a generous act, it’s deserving of some time off for good behavior.

The Last House on the Left premiere held in Los Angles

If vegan ice cream is the baddest, then coconut vegan ice cream is superbad!

Martha MacIsaac, who played the love interest of Michael Cera in Superbad, has confessed to some serious love for vegan coconut ice cream.

“The most delicious ice cream of all time,” she said.

Could Martha’s spoon be permanently stuck in a carton of Purely Decadent Vegan Ice Cream made with coconut milk?

There are numerous flavors to choose from, including Chocolate, Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl, Coconut, Cookie Dough, Mint Chip, Mocha Almond Fudge, Passionate Mango, and Vanilla Bean.

Martha would love to have a night alone with British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

“I would want to invite a really great cook. So, maybe I would have Jamie Oliver to cook a nice vegetarian meal and teach me as he cooked.”

Kari Byron Doesn’t Bust Myth About Meat Cravings And Pregnancy

Mythbuster #1: You don’t have to eat real meat during pregnancy if you get weird cravings.

Kari Byron, co-host of the Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters, uncovers the truth about urban legends and news stories in pop culture.

So we’re wondering why she didn’t test out the myth that otherwise vegetarian women who get meaty cravings during pregnancy can’t get their needs fulfilled through imitation meats.

Byron gave into some mean cravings for beef stew while pregnant even though she was a strict vegetarian before.

“My husband had to cut the meat up — that part was too gross for me! — and he prepared it,” she said.

Byron thinks her baby wanted the full experience of hardcore, hormone pumped beef versus wimpy, recreational drug meat like chicken.

“I guess the little baby wanted to taste beef! Not even a gateway meat like chicken!”

Maybe next time Byron will investigate this urban legend and see if imitation beef does the trick.
