PETA Asks Barack Obama To Do Meat-Free Mondays At White House

Barack Obama Campaigns In Remaining Primary States

With all the bad publicity Barack Obama has gained in the eyes of vegetarians because of  his burger joint hopping habit, the President of the United States now has a chance to redeem himself.

People for the Ethical Treatments of Animals (PETA) has asked Obama to go vegetarian for one day of the week by participating in Meat Free Mondays.

In a letter written to the president, PETA’s president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk illustrates how former president Harry Truman called on people to refrain from eating meat on Tuesdays and poultry on Thursdays to help save grain and feed the hungry in Europe.

Now, Obama has the opportunity to help both people and the planet by initiating a similar program at the White House.

“Sir Paul McCartney is in town this weekend and has launched an initiative called “Meat-Free Mondays” to help stave off climate change, lessen the suffering of animals, and promote a diet healthier than the artery-clogging, obesity-inducing one that is a major cause of the soaring health-care costs and worker absenteeism in this country.”

“If you institute this program in the White House, it will be a giant step forward in transforming it to a green house, and it will set a wonderful example for people nationwide-or worldwide-who look to you for leadership when it comes to a kinder, environmentally friendlier, and more health-conscious approach to life.”

Recently Barack Obama hosted chef Bobby Flay and several men from local D.C. schools at the Kick Off Young Men’s barbecue on the White House South Lawn.

This makes, what, strike three?

Ray’s Hell burger visit with vice president Joe Biden, the Cheeseburger incident at Five Guys, and now a barbecue on the White House lawn.

Grilled steak, corn, and chicken were on the menu, but no where on the White House blog did it mention a veggie burger.

Mr. Obama doesn’t appear to be practicing what he preached last year on the campaign trail when he said encouraging Americans to eat more plant based foods can clean up the healthcare mess by reducing rates of obesity related diseases like diabetes.

At least First Lady Michelle Obama is promoting eating more vegetables.

Obama Not The First President To Make Dog Mistake

The White House Debuts The Obamas New Dog Bo, A Portuguese Water Dog

After Barack Obama and the family got a dog that was not rescued from a shelter, there was much outcry from animal lovers everywhere.

But Barack isn’t the first president to make a pet faux paw (hahaha) in the spotlight.

During his time in the Oval Office, Lyndon B. Johnson had a beagle dog that he tried coaxing into standing on its hind legs for the press cameras.

Doggie wasn’t into it that day, so Johnson pulled on the dog’s ears and forced it to stand upright.

Public outrage occurred and Lyndon’s response wasn’t exactly the best damage control you can purchase.

A 1964 Time magazine article  reported that in London, the chairman of the League Against Cruel Sports stated, “If somebody picked you up by the ears, you’d yelp too. This is a most extraordinary way to treat a dog.”

Although he apologized for the incident, he admitted to pulling the dog’s ears since it was a puppy and added the beagle, “seemed to like it.”

All this wonderful history was recently stated on Animal Planet’s Dogs 101 and you can currently vote for your favorite first pup online!

PETA Swats Fly Swatting Barack Obama

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 18th, 2009 in Politicians, Videos.

Eating burgers in public, killing flies, darn it, Mr. President, what has gotten into you?

Barack Obama is under fire again from the animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for swatting at and…gasp… killing a fly during an interview.

After hearing of the murder, PETA responded with the statement, “He isn’t the Buddha, he’s a human being and human beings have a long way to go before they think before they act.”

Some supporters of PETA are even laughing at this response and saying, in more or less words, “Give me a break!”

One commenter on TMZ.com said, “I’m a PETA supporter and I always stand up for what they do because in most cases, they do it out of caring for animals. But this makes me feel embarrassed.”

PETA has issued another statement, further explaining their stance.

“When the media began contacting us in droves for a statement, we obliged, simply by saying that the president isn’t the Buddha and shouldn’t be expected to do everything right—if not for that, we would not have brought it up. It’s the media who are making a big deal about the fly swat—not PETA. However, we took the opportunity, when asked, to point out that we do offer lots of ways in which to control insects of all kinds without harming them, including the humane bug catcher we sent President Obama. There is even a chapter in PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk’s book Making Kind Choices about how to rid your home of “uninvited guests.”

Gisele Bundchen: Vegan Sinner, Saint With Five Guys, Lucky Duck

The 2009 Rainforest Alliance Gala

Popsugar.com reported that Gisele Bundchen wanted to make the most of her weekend and looks like she played the part of good eater cop/bad eater cop in 48 hours.

The model and wife of New England Patriot’s quarterback Tom Brady was spotted at both Five Guys Famous Burger and Fries and carrying a One Lucky Duck bag, a raw foods and organic establishment in New York.

One one hand, we could give her the Barack Obama lecture on making a burger joint visit. But she obviously patronizes vegan shops as well, so we have to give a high five for that.

What do you think? Is Gisele aiming for a Meat-Free Monday type of diet and becoming a flexitarian?

Did Owen Wilson cut in front of her while she was waiting in line?

PETA Queen, Ingrid Newkirk, Chats With Ecorazzi

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Videos.

PETA’s co-founder and president, Ingrid Newkirk, sat down with green gossip website Ecorazzi.com over a vegan bacon cheeseburger for an interview.

Ingrid’s latest book, The PETA Practical Guide To Animal Rights, has just been released and offers tips for everyday folk to get involved with protecting animals.

Ingrid said one of the most important things an activist can do is to arm themselves with answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.

She, like Russell Simmons, also said Barack Obama should stop publicly going out for cheeseburgers and opt for healthier, vegetarian choices instead.

So many are talking. Think Mr. President will get the message?

Watch the video to hear what Ingrid had to say about Michael Vick and other topics.

Russell Simmons Calls Out Barack Obama On Burger Joint Visits

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, June 13th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink, Politicians, Videos.

Oh yeah, Russell. Tell it like it is!

Barack Obama has been making a habit of visiting burger joints with the public watching. There was the Ray’s Hell Burger outing (yes, burgers are hell for many involved) with vice president Joe Biden. And the Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries visit with NBC journalist Brian Williams.

We called Obama out, and now Russell Simmons is putting in his two cents in a politico.com video.

Russell suggests Obama get something healthier like a falafel.

Watch the video to hear Russell chastise Obama. Our favorite quote? “He’s young,” Russell said, referring to Obama needing to learn to make better choices. LOL! The elders are telling you to each your veggies, Barack.

President Obama Buys Hamburgers

President Barack Obama put himself on the vegetarians’ blacklist when he went to Ray’s Hell Burger with vice president Joe Biden. He also rubbed conservatives the wrong way by ordering that fancy mustard crap.

Now, Barack’s at it again, going public with his beef transgressions, this time visiting Five Guys Burger and Fries with NBC journalist Brian Williams. Arrgh!

Obama ordered a cheeseburger with tomatoes and jalapenos and fries.

There was a whole lotta Twittering going on about the incident, including CBS radio White House correspondent Mark Knoller, who asked if the vegans were getting testy about it.

“Does Obama put the vegan vote in peril by going out for burgers?”

Mark may have been joking, but Obama’s recent choices in dining do raise some questions within the veg community, given his previous statements about fixing the healthcare system by starting with the American diet. A Five Guys visit could have easily been turned into a Subway visit or another restaurant that features plant based items as the main course, such as a Mediterranean eatery.

Bill Clinton showed off his McDonald’s hopping for some time until heart troubles caused him to rethink his fast food foodie habits. We surely hope it won’t take a health scare (did Obama ever give up smoking?), to make America’s #1 man change where he grabs a bite between Supreme Court nomination briefings.
