Oprah “Your Own Show” Bans Vegetarian Contest Submission (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 24th, 2010 in Food & Drink, TV Hosts, Videos.

Oprah Winfrey is holding a contest called Your Own Show: Oprah’s Show For The Next TV Star where viewers upload their ideas for a daytime show, whether it’d be about cooking, fashion or other issues and their clips are voted on.

Convert My Grill is a segment upload by vegetarian Justin Barker that wasn’t received too well by Oprah’s people. According to the San Franciscoist, the submission was banned from the contest twice–once for using alcohol in the clip and another for Barker using his friends instead of going solo.

Picky, picky…

Convert My Grill shows Barker and a friend making over another friend’s grill, making a homemade seitan-like sausage and swapping chicken for both it and asparagus.

A former vegan chef for the now defunct Earth Tonez Cafe in Brooklyn, New York is competing on this season’s Hell’s Kitchen.

Nilka Hendricks created the menu at Earth Tonez, adding items like vegetable wraps and Portobello mushroom soups and told Glen Cove Patch her experience at the cafe was the first time she felt she had developed her own cooking style.

“That was the first time I stepped out on my own and did Nilka’s style of food, and that was the first time I ever did vegan and vegetarian food. I didn’t know what I was doing but I said, ‘I’m going to go cook this food like I know how to cook.’ Everybody adapted to the food and they really enjoyed the food.”

Casey Affleck told USA Today he has plans to open a restaurant in Los Angeles.

The vegan of 12 years joked that if you order a meat dish in front of him, he’ll “think so much less of you.”

Seen here is a video Affleck recorded explaining why he went vegan.  He explains that although it was hard finding suitable food and clothing over a decade ago, so much has changed now. Could this be due to an increase in the demand for vegetarian products?

A report in 2003 by Natural Foods Merchandiser revealed sales of vegetarian products increased by 20 to 40 percent annually over a period of 5 years. In 1996, U.S. sales of vegetarian foods were $3.1 million. By 2001, those sales were $1.25 billion!
