Andrew G All Funked Out From Funky Pies Vegan Deliciousness

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 in Actors, Business, Celebrity Tweets, Restaurants, TV Hosts.

Leona Lewis Media Call

Andrew G. had the chance to Tweet about a vegan pie just before the carbs took their toll.

“Vegan pie Floater from Funky Pies in Bondi, nap soon. Coz that’s how I roll, huge serve of carbs then straight to sleep…”

Funky Pies is a great place to catch some vegan food in an Australian eatery that’s eco-conscious in every aspect of its business.

Besides serving great vegan food like “Brekkie’ Rolls” of Veg-sausage mix, beans, tomato, ‘bacon’ bits and “Funky Chunky” and “No Wurry Curry,” Funky Pies using biodegradable packing in all their take out products, serves fair trade coffee, and boasts its staff uniforms are made in sweatshop free factories.

Angie Stephenson, the self titled “Director of Funk” says on the website about Funky Pies’ specialization:

“That’s an easy one, who doesn’t love a good pie? You don’t have to be Aussie to enjoy a nice hot tasty pie with deliciously flaky pastry. You can get dodgy pies though, so I wanted to provide a product that was not only quick to cook and easy to eat, but a healthy alternative to the more common ‘meat’ pie where you are really not sure what part of an animal you are eating…mmm.”

We hear you, Angie. Mystery meat is totally different kind of funky.

Fred Mascherino took a moment to Tweet his love for breakfast food at the Chicago Diner.

“Vegan French toast the The Chicago Diner- kickin’ ass!”

Chicagoans know Chicago Diner has the best in vegan and vegetarian home style breakfast items like tofu mock egg scrambles, seitan sausages, and biscuits with vegan gravy.

And Fred’s not the only celebrity to order off the menu.

Ellen DeGeneres likes the Diner’s seitan hot wings so much, she had them Fed’exed to her studios in California.

Eh, yeah we know it’s not so green to fly food that far.

But hey, the food was vegan so it took some of the weight off Ellen’s footprint.

For a more environmentally friendly way to enjoy the Diner’s hot wings, take a train to the Windy City on a road trip and stock  up on meals like Sweet and Sour Tofu, vegan Chicago Style Hot Doggs, and Parmesan “Chickin” Caesar salad.

If you were a fan of alternative female rockers of the 90s, you probably remember Sarah Betten from K’s Choice, known for their haunting and melodic song, I’m Not An Addict.

Betten and her band mates will be in Asheville, North Carolina recording some new tunes and there are a couple of hot spots she likes to frequent, Mellow Mushroom and Earth Fare.

“We’ll definitely have to go to Mellow Mushroom,” Betten told charletteobserver.com. “There’s a great vegetarian place that I know I’ll hit a couple times. Earthfare’s close to the studio.”

If you head to Asheville, after picking up your pizza from Mellow Mushroom, you can swing by Earth Fare to stock up your home or apartment with natural and organic foods.

Some cool facts about Earth Fare, from its website.

1. Earth Fare became the first supermarket to ban high fructose corn syrup in 2004.

2. Earth Fare also removed all products with hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oils from its shelves 13 years ago-before everybody caught onto the trans fat bandwagon.

Carrie Underwood Sandwich: A Meaty Misspelling

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 in Business, Female Singers, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Carrie Underwood and her dog Ace at Los Angeles airport

There’s an eatery called Belles Cafe in Willinston, Vermont that has a sandwich named after Carrie Underwood.

There are two problems with this.

Her name is spelled “Carry” in the sandwich title and it is maheeeatay, as a fan on carriefans.com found out.

“I went to my local deli and bakery called Belles Cafe yesterday with my cousin and we were looking at the menu and she yells “omg I bet you are getting the Carrie Underwood.” i didn’t know what she was talking about so I look up at the menu and they have a sandwich called Carrie Underwood. And then my cousin yells “obviously they didn’t do any research before creating her sandwich.” They spelt her name “Carry” and her sandwich had meat on it. I was mad because I wanted to get it, but being a vegetarian myself I couldn’t. I was still excited though because it was so random.”

We’ve seen this before.

Natalie Portman‘s lobster salad.

Prince Fielder‘s meaty pizza made in honor of his accomplishments.

But hey, we won’t complain too much.

At least those guys got their names spelled right.

No harsh feelings to Cafe Belles, of course.

We’re just hoping they modify the Carrie sandwich.

Pamela Anderson enjoyed some vegan pizza at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica recently.

Pamela’s probably taking the time to chill before her big eco fashion label debut, A*Muse, in New Zealand next week.

Contrary to what Olivia Munn says, vegan pizza doesn’t taste like poo and if you’re interested in doing pizza sans cheese, whether it’d be for health or ethical reasons, you just might find what you’re looking for at even a fast food restaurant.

Leaving the cheese off a Papa John’s for example, gives you a pizza with both the crust and sauce vegan.

Dominos has one of four crusts that are vegan, but is only available in select stores. It’s sauce is vegan too.

And Godfather’s pizza sauce and dough are vegan as well.

2009 NATO Summit

Blue Hill restaurant in New York received a great deal of attention after a tipster told the press Barack Obama and wife Michelle had a dinner date there.

Now, Observer writer Rachel Cook is calling vegetables from Blue Hill the “new sex.”

This should really increase business.

“Mesmerised, I removed a carrot from its spike, and took a bite. “Vegetables,” I thought. “They’re the new sex.”

Blue Hill is somewhat an environmental eatery, with ingredients being sourced from local farmers, Barber being championed a locavore by the media.

But Blue Hill isn’t a vegetarian restaurant, by any means.

The menu will make you cover your eyes as selections containing pork, chicken, and the dreaded baby animal veal are included.

And Blue Hill chef Dan Barber has discussed how to make foie gras for his restaurant in the future.

To experiment, Barber had “free-range” geese and didn’t use gavage.

An expert he called upon, Eduardo Sousa, doesn’t believe in force feeding methods to fatten a goose’s liver, saying he believes in “ethical foie gras.”

Barber was less than satisfied, calling the geese livers “ping-pong sized.”

In his determination to succeed in getting foie gras on the plate, will Barber resort to crueler farming practices?

Ideally, Blue Hill would put more locally grown plant based dishes on its menu.

Perhaps find that sought after chef who can create faux foie gras.

Because at Blue Hill, vegetables may be the new sex, but they’re not having nearly as much of it as they could.

Jason Mraz took a moment to Tweet in agreement with the readers of YELP, a website with restaurant reviews.

“stoked that www.cafeflourish.com won #1 vegan restaurant LA on YELP. It’s so good. I would have voted for them too.”

Someone at Cafe Flourish is all about the love, cause the menu is nothing but hookin’ up.

Love Bites, Love Salads, Sandwiches that Love You, Big Love Bites and Be-Love Corn Crusted Pizzas make up the main menu sections.

Our favorite is the “Snuggle Fest”-Soy hot dogs wrapped in a single “blanket” with ketchup, Dijon, “mayo” & sweet pickle relish with a side Caesar salad.

Better lovin’ requires you get in touch with your spiritual side.

The “Amen for Almond Hummus” is hummus topped with a chunky olive tapenade with sun-dried tomato flax crackers for scooping.
