Frankenburger

Frankenburger

The KFC Double Down and McGangburger have had their 15 minutes of fame. Now the Frankenburger is hoping to win the hearts (by literally stopping them) of people with it’s trio of McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King food components.

Unlike other “killer” meat sandwich combos, the Frankenburger is not simply of piling of several patties of dead flesh onto a bun. Rather it takes the meat, cheese, vegetables, fries and other ingredients from several fast food meals to create the “perfect” burger. We are already salivating at a vegan version. Here is the formula for disaster, from Village Voice.

Big Brother‘s vegan housemate Yvette Martyn has a real big brother looking after her.

Gwyn Martyn, a stockbroker, is confident his little sister will get along just fine, despite her dietary restrictions.

“They often have small budgets for food and people don’t often like making separate dishes for vegetarians,” he said, “but she is happy eating pasta, so hopefully she will be okay.”

Pasta’s not the refined starch carbohydrate monster it was labeled by the anti-veggie villains like proponents of low carb and high meat diets. Enriched grain pasta is not only low in sodium, it’s a great source of protein for vegetarians and provides a fantastic energy boost with its complex carbohydrates that are released slowly over time.

Mary McCartney‘s favorite vegetarian snack is an old standby–peanut butter and jelly, something she learned to love from watching Sesame Street.

And although PB & J sandwiches make a great item to carry in school lunches, McCartney says she doesn’t force her lifestyle on her children, even though they have chosen to be vegetarian.

“They don’t have to be,” McCartney said. “It would be their choice. I don’t like to force it on people. I don’t like to be told what to do, so I don’t like to tell them what to do.”

PB & J may be older than Big Bird, but there are numerous variations of the sandwich you can try when things get boring.

Cat Cora has a morning regime we all could benefit from–breakfast that consists of vitamin rich fruits and vegetables, omega rich nuts and heart healthy soy.

“We do protein smoothies in the morning,” the chef told WebMD. “Here’s how to make them: Add some fresh baby spinach, frozen mango chunks, five or six almonds, a little soy milk, a little juice if you like, some protein powder, and blend it up. Delicious! We love it around the house. We call it a Shrek drink to get the boys to drink it. And they do!”

Might we suggest using Tony Gonzalez‘s All-Pro-Science vegan protein powder from hemp, pea and brown rice protein in Cora’s shake?

NEW YORK - JUNE 02: Honoree Russell Simmons attends the Gold Medal of Honor for Lifetime Achievement in Music award presentation at The National Arts Club on June 2, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Andrew H. Walker/Getty Images)

Russell Simmons hosted an event in his home for two schools that provide environments for many African-American and Latino boys to succeed in an area where their educational outcomes aren’t always good. The event raised $250,00 for the Eagle Academy Foundation, which supports three New York City schools for the young men.

Providing the food was Acquolina Catering, which served fried tofu with cilantro sauce and Portobello burger and chocolate mousse–all vegan items.

Two of the schools boast an 85% graduate rate for the students, compared to the average of 50% for African-American and Latino men in other schools in the region.

Ellen DeGeneres Makes Spring Rolls With Roberto Martin (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 10th, 2010 in Chefs, Recipes, TV Hosts, Videos.

Ellen DeGeneres brought her favorite right hand man in food, her personal chef Roberto Martin, on the show to demonstrate preparing vegetarian spring rolls.

Vegetarians just love dipping–ice cream, veggie dip, skinny dip…whoa, maybe too much information. But it’s always fun to make your own soy sauce, vinegar and spice dip for Asian treats like these and the recipe for such, along with the spring rolls can be found on Ellen’s page.

You discover something new every day and today’s lesson is black bean pasta, which is used in the creation.

“It’s so good for you. It’s really high in protein,” Martin comments on the pasta that’s a part of an entirely vegan meal.

Good Housekeeping Family Vegetarian Cooking Cookbook

One of the oldest magazines featuring articles related to diet, recipes and health, Good Housekeeping, has released another vegetarian cookbook, Good Housekeeping Family Vegetarian Cooking: 225 Recipes Everyone Will Love.

Good Housekeeping’s latest is said to feature a variety of meatless recipes from wraps, sandwiches, soups and casseroles and includes a chapter designed for families with only one vegetarian so the meals can incorporate meat.

Kinda silly to do for a vegetarian cookbook and you would think the lone veggie in the family chapter would be an opportunity to introduce a variety of meat substitutes or plant based substitutes like seitan.

At any rate, you may purchase the collection for around $25 retail and MSNBC has included two sample recipes on their site for what you might find inside.

Poker player Annie LePage makes raw mango and coconut sushi in this video where rice is substituted for a nut pate in the recipe.

LePage has her daughter to thank for going vegan, as she says in a new PETA PSA for vegetarianism.

Given the fact she has children, LePage is extremely upset that companies like McDonald’s market their less than healthy and cruelly sourced products to kids.

“If kids really saw what goes on behind the scene, instead of that silly clown, I don’t think they would want to eat it so much,” she says in the PSA, which can be seen below. Grab a pen and jot down the ingredients to the veggie sushi, which are displayed across the screen as LePage prepares it.
