Al Sharpton

The Reverend Al Sharpton announced last year he’d gone meatless. But we had no idea how much this benefited him. Sharpton lost 130 pounds from the vegetarian diet he adopted in 2010. He cites vegan former president of the United States Bill Clinton as an inspiration for the change.

“It was about two years ago that I finally decided to take all the weight off again, and so I cut the starches, the meat, and I even gave up chicken. I was a chicken junkie. I used to eat chicken three times a day. I have gone from a weight of 214 pounds to my current weight of 167 pounds.”

Dennis Kucinich

“I’m a vegan. I kind of am hungry all the time.”

–Vegan congressman Dennis Kucinich, jokingly while discussing the subject of a hunger strike by U.S. postal workers who oppose proposed cuts in service.

Several parts of legislation have been counter-proposed in order to save the service, including changes to the way retirement services are funded and efforts to prevent closings in the next decade. Although he supports the workers who have pledged to go on strike for the next several days in D.C., Kucinich says he can’t give up his spaghetti and “wheat” balls and vegan muffins for it himself.

Congressman Ted Deutch Celebrates Birthday In Vegetarian Style

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 20th, 2012 in Food & Drink, Politicians, Restaurants.

Ted Deutch

A congressman celebrated his 46th birthday in style.

Ted Deutch, D-Boca Raton, hosted a dinner party in honor of growing older at Florida’s Sublime restaurant, a completely vegetarian eatery.

Sources say the politician and friends dined on Sicilian grilled vegetables, veggie burgers, Thai pizza, enchiladas, ravioli, quiche and chocolate nirvana cake.

The Sun-Sentinel said wrote, “It’s a good thing he’s in a safely liberal, Democratic district in Broward and Palm Beach counties. If he had more tea party constituents, they’d probably prefer he celebrate by eating red meat.”

Or, he’d, like a former Republican Montana  governor did, celebrate with veggies and then deny ever contemplating such a sin.

Megan Park

Secret Life of the American Teenager‘s Megan Park is supporting a bill proposed by Canadian Senator Mac Harb that would phase-out the seal hunt.

As a native Canadian, Park wanted to show her support for both the politician and her stance against the hunt and wrote a letter urging the passage of S-210.

“Since I play a teenager on TV, I know that young people everywhere are becoming increasingly aware of issues that affect animals, and like me, they don’t want to see baby seals bludgeoned and skinned alive to make fur coats.”

Restaurant Impossible Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama was a guest on Food Network’s Restaurant Impossible where she and host Robert Irvine visited a school garden at the non-profit Horton’s Kids in Washington, D.C.   The First Lady’s challenge for Irvine, who usually spends the episode trying to salvage failing restaurants, was to help “kids eat right and get active, so that they can grow up healthy and strong.”

Mrs. Obama used the analogy that caring for a garden was similar to caring for the human body, citing you wouldn’t use soda to water it.

The group also witness how a bicycle powered hose could combine exercise and gardening. Rainwater was collected and the bike is then ridden by students to push the water onto the land.

When Michelle got on the bike to water the garden, Irvine said, “We have one of the fittest first ladies in the history of America and she’s talking the talk and walking the walk.”

A clip from the show can be viewed below.

Boris Johnson and Jon Stewart discussed New York’s Mayor Bloombergs proposed ban on soda on a recent episode of The Daily Show.

Sure, soda is scandalous–it’s full of high-fructose corn syrup, empty calories and preservatives–but how does it’s illicitness compare, ounce per ounce, with the same serving of marijuana?

Using glasses filled with both, ahem, “products,” Johnson and Stewart joke that the fine for a restaurant serving a tall glass of “Coke,” (the legal kind) would be greater than a glass of the illegal plant.

Is this Big Brother looking after New Yorkers or just another attempt to curtail choice and freedom?

Michelle Obama was a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman where she had the honor of counting down the evening’s top 10 list.

This list revolved around gardening to coincide with the publication of the First Lady’s book on her gardening experiences at the White House and gave some pretty useful facts for those with green thumbs.

For example, did you know that, according to #9 on Letterman’s list, when you plant avocados, tomatoes, onions and cilantro together, you grow a guacamole tree?

During guest host week on Piers Morgan Tonight, producer Harvey Weinstein took some time to interview former president of the United States Bill Clinton on a variety of topics and, as usual, Clinton’s vegan diet made for interesting conversation.

“You ate cheeseburgers with me in Aspen,” Weinstein said. “Now you’re a vegan. How did you get there? How do I get there?”
