Jonathan Safran Foer‘s Authors@Google discussion covers all the points you would expect from the younger generation’s father of factory farming education on how everyone should reduce their meat intake–from less livestock emitting gases into the environment to the public health crisis being created by the use of so many antibiotics on farms to the cruel and painful ways animals are treated.

You can’t read through Eating Animals, read an interview or listen to a speech by Foer without realizing you should at least partake in Meatless Monday. But what about those who are afraid to call themselves the big “V” word in fear of criticism when they fail?

"Skinny Bitch: Ultimate Everyday Cookbook"

If cutting back on desserts is one of your New Year’s resolutions, you may want to put it on hold until you’ve gobbled up Kim Barnouin‘s Vegan Apple Pie.

A treat that Barnouin’s mother has made for 40 years, Jack’s Grandma’s Apple Pie has undergone a few transformations to suit the Skinny Bitch author’s egg and dairy-free dietary preferences.

Earth Balance vegan butter and Spectrum vegetable shortening are Kim’s preferred switches for the pie, but she was nice enough to give other vegan baking suggestions during her interview with EcoStiletto.

Worst Vegetarian News Stories Of 2010

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 31st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink, Fur, Not So Vegetarian.

Lady Gaga

We gave you the best vegetarian news stories of 2010. But a lot of anti-veg events made headlines too. Here’s the best of the worst.

10. Johnny Weir ruffles fur feathers during the winter Olympics. It’s bad enough he picks a costume with rabbit fur around the collar. After being criticized, he’s says he’ll “wear fur again” and it’s all just a part of creative expression. Someone hit the ice with his head one time too many while practicing the double-dunce-klutz.

9. Sarah Palin kills caribou on TLC reality show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska.” Someone who feeds her family potentially lead contaminated meat shouldn’t be criticizing Mrs. Obama’s initiatives to make school lunches healthier. In 2008, she gave an interview while Tom turkey got his head chopped off. In 2010, it’s Rudolph. Easter Bunny, dude, watch your back!

8. Angelina Jolie says secret beauty tip is steak. This is coming from an ex-vegan actress who was too lazy to do her research and learn to eat vegan properly, so she failed, went back to meat, and praised it for giving her that sexy “Salt” look. Would love to see what her heart looks like from all the salt in processed meats.

7. KT Tunstall is vegetarian–except for pig’s blood. Sure, some vegans will cheat and eat grandma’s butter cookies at Christmas. But KT Tunstall discussed in detail how scrumptious black pudding, a congealed “treat” made from pig’s blood, was even though she normally eats tofu and beans. “Suddenly we see” Twilight vegetarian vampire taking a whole new meaning.

Best Vegetarian News Stories Of 2010

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 31st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink.

Bill Clinton

Here are a few of the top vegetarian stories featuring the famous and those who rose to fame because of their stance on food, animals and the environment.

10. The Apprentice is vegetarian. Brandy Kuentzel ran an eco-friendly cupcake truck before she was hired as Trump’s leading business lady. She revealed to us during an interview that she’d love to host a show with her best friend about all things sustainable. That show can’t come soon enough as we need some anti Paula Deen sausage segments on daytime.

9. A vegan baker wins “Cupcake Wars.” Chloe Coscarelli showed the world vegan is tasty. Very tasty. She won the war on the Food Network with her recipes for Ginger Nutmeg Spice with Date Caramel Drizzle, Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake, Crème-filled Chocolate Orange with Candied Orange Peel, and Raspberry Tiramisu.

8. Bob Harper invites “The Biggest Loser” contestants in home for vegan meal. Yum. Everybody was a winner on that episode, including Harper’s fans, who could download the recipes from his website. Harper showed America one of the best ways to lose weight healthily without sacrificing good grub.

The Veronicas

Jess Origliasso celebrated a birthday on Christmas. Did this mean double presents? Or double the number of yummy, tasty veggie tacos?

One-half of the pop duo The Veronicas, Jess is seen is these videos demonstrating how to make her almost vegan tacos and guacamole dip.

Jess calls them vegan, but like many people, probably isn’t aware that the brand of faux cheese she’s using contains casein, a milk protein often added to soy and other imitation cheeses. A simple switch to a truly vegan cheese like Teese or Daiya will give you the genuine vegan touch.

The Veronicas are often on the road and because of this, they can’t always access an oven. This is why Jess chose refried beans instead of faux meat because she prefers to fry imitation meats in a saucepan. Taco shells can be microwaved too.

“About 45 seconds if you put all of them in,” Jess says, referring to the length of time it takes to warm an entire box of shells.

These tacos get the approval of “Slim Dusty,” a meat-eating, cow farm owner who chose to hide his identity. Watch the videos below for full instructions for making the veggie tacos and guacamole and tell us if they get your approval as well.

The China Study

The China Study

“I came from a dairy farm and started my career strongly believing in the nutritional value of this food, especially for its protein content. But, in our experiments, we documented multiple times a remarkable ability of the main protein of cow’s milk, casein, to promote cancer growth and to do so by a plethora of mechanisms. For many years, animal-based protein, like casein, has been known to increase blood cholesterol and encourage early stages of heart disease.”

Dr. T. Colin Campbell, author of “The China Study,” and inspiration for Bill Clinton going vegan on how dairy products may not do a body good like those milk commercials claim. And while casein protein has been associated with heart disease, soy protein has been found to benefit cholesterol by lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and raising HDL (good) levels.

Will the new slogan for health soon be, “Soymilk. It does a body’s heart good?”

Lipton tea

Tea has been around for centuries. So why would Lipton conduct research on animals to examine its safety?

It was all a plan to prove bogus health claims made by the company that failed to show any evidence of being accurate.

According to PETA, investigators subjected animals to the following experiments:

Rabbits: “fed a high-fat, cholesterol-laden diet, leading to extreme hardening of the arteries. They were then fed tea to see if it affected the lesions that formed on the animals’ arteries. After the experiment, the rabbits’ heads were cut off.”

Mice: “bred to suffer from a painful bowel inflammation were fed tea ingredients in order to see if the tea had any effect on their condition. After the test, experimenters killed the mice by suffocating them or breaking their necks.”

Katy Perry‘s on the cover of Italian magazine Grazia’s latest issue and inside she shares her plans for this holiday weekend’s dinner with newlywed husband Russell Brand.

“There will be me and Russ and a pink Christmas tree and a tofu-urky. We’ll open one present the night before because that’s the tradition in my family. And we’ll do something new. We’ll start our own new tradition because we are a family now.”

Could that new tradition include eating veg throughout the entire year and not just during the holidays?

The couple has reportedly also given up dairy at least until the end of the year and both have been eating a diet of plant-based proteins like tofu and raw vegetables to get in better shape.

What’s your veg tradition for the holidays?
