Jack LaLanne Said We Don’t Need Meat And Dairy

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, January 24th, 2011 in Food & Drink, Nutrition-Health-Fitness.

Jack LaLanne

Jack LaLanne, a legendary fitness expert who followed a mostly plant-based diet during his lifetime, has died at the age of 96. LaLanne got interested in eating whole foods versus processed foods after hearing Dr. Paul Bragg, founder of the famous Bragg foods which include the soy sauce-like seasoning many vegetarians have come to love, Bragg’s Liquid Aminos, speak.

During an interview, Lalanne talked in detail how meat and dairy were overrated in terms of nutrition.

Jack LaLanne: I use no milk of any kind. Anything that comes from a cow I don’t eat.

Russell Simmons Is A Vegan Chicken Nugget Fan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 20th, 2011 in Food & Drink, Recipes.

Russell Simmons

Russell Simmons is a thigh man. Or maybe a wing man. Dare we say a breast man?

He likes the taste of chicken, but as a vegan and someone who’s campaigned for better animal welfare standards at KFC, he won’t put his lips near one.

Instead he prefers to have faux chicken nuggets on top a bed of spinach, something he told The Skanner is his favorite meal.

“I like to put spinach on top of olive oil, and just let it wilt for a second. And then put vegan chicken nuggets on top of it. I’m not a big chef.”

Being the small-scale chef  he is, we’re guessing Russell buys frozen faux chicken nuggets. But if you like to wear that organic cotton apron a lot, try some of  the recipes that exist, using tofu, tempeh or seitan.

Natalie Portman

How do pregnant celebrities that follow a vegan diet like Natalie Portman and Alicia Silverstone feed their bump?

It should come from plants, according to Terry Walters, author of “Clean Start” and “Clean Food,” a book about eating seasonally. Walters is a food educator and on the board of directors at one of the largest urban organic farms in the United States.

“[Dark leafy greens] might not have as much calcium or minerals as a glass of milk,” said Terry, “But we are better able to access more minerals.”

One particular subject Collen will touch on is the issue of childhood obesity. We got a chance to do a Q & A with Collen recently and asked this current vegan and vegetarian for over three decades how convincing parents that a plant-based diet is key to fighting this epidemic.

“When it comes to telling parents how to feed their children it can be a touchy subject if bad eating habits were ingrained in those parents when they were children and so on. To them, there may be no other way. There are walls of excuses to get around.”

If there was one resolution cookbook author Christina Pirello wanted to keep, it was to refrain from getting angry.

Unfortunately, an article she read in a magazine which touted “heart-healthy” meals containing meat was enough to make her renege before the end of January.

“I get to the article–there’s about 7 dishes. Not one dish is based in veggies. Oh, they might have some zucchini thrown in or a little broccoli stirred in, but that’s it…If it didn’t have processed grain, it had animal food. Very likely both. Not one was vegetable-based.”

Not to worry, though. Pirello has picked up where the article left off and unveiled her “Healthy Cookbooks To Start The New Year.”
