SXSW 2008 Day 4 - Austin TX

Billboard reports that the annual SXSW (South By South West) festival in Austin drew record numbers with 13,022 registered music industry professionals.

And while 100,000 people were expected to attend the 10 day music, film and networking event, official figures are still being tallied.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a vegetarian musician fest offered annually?

Just think of all the great award winning acts that could take the stage, not to mention the great food to eat at the concessions.

Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders would ensure seitan and not roast beef sandwiches would be sold to hungry fans.

The smooth sounds of hip hop artist Erykah Badu could combine with jazzy DJ skills of someone like Moby for an evening of soul topped off with a hearty helping of UK women Joss Stone and Leona Lewis.

Singer songwriter Nellie McKay controls the piano, indoors or outdoors.

And another day could be reserved for the meatless rockers like Joan Jett, Boston’s Tom Scholz and Queen’s Brian May.

Meatless music fanatics with an entrepreneurial spirit, can you make this happen in the future?

Classic Rock Roll Of Honour - Show

When on tour, Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders love to engage in some serious avocado snacking.

“We must be the only band that on our catering there’s a big bowl of avocados!” Hynde told stuff.co.nz.

But there’s no guacamole dip being passed between the band members.

Chrissie and her crew prefer the green goodness between slices of bread.

“Nick, my bass player, has this secret recipe for avocado sandwiches which we eat every night on tour,” Hynde explained.

An avocado a day may keep the bad cholesterol away for the band, as the fruit is rich in heart healthy monounsaturated fat, shown in several studies to lower both LDL “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides.

If you get the chance to ask Hynde for her autograph, see if she’ll scribble the sandwich recipe on the CD jacket as well.

Central Park SummerStage - Juliette Lewis, Cat Power & The Pretenders

The Pretenders have just released a CD and DVD package, Pretenders:Live in London, which was filmed at Shepherds Bush Empire in 2009 by Pierre and Francois Lamoureux.

Chrissie Hynde interviewed with Stuff.co.nz about The Pretenders upcoming tour in Australia and New Zealand, where she confirmed that it only takes the smell of a sirloin to get her out of the mood during a concert.

“I start getting in a really bad mood and start thinking about slaughterhouses and I can’t concentrate,” Hynde said.

This unfortunately leads to a little abuse on the fans from Chrissie.

“And then I start berating the audience and calling them meat-eaters and when someone pays to come and see you they don’t really want you to tell them to f**k off.”

In the past, Chrissie has prevented both becoming nauseous from meat smells and giving her fans verbal tirades by asking the concession stands not to serve meat at her concerts, even offering fake versions of traditional sandwiches made with plant protein such as seitan.

Here’s hoping for Chrissie and everyone else’s sake that any supporting or opening act on the upcoming tour will respect her beliefs and nose.

“As much as I might like the band we’re supporting, if I don’t like their catering … it ruins my show if I can smell a burger van from the stage, the show’s over for me.”

Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2010 - Los Angeles

Katy Perry has a very healthful habit of consuming mushrooms (presumably the non hallucinogenic ones).

“I love mushrooms,” she said. “I could eat a ton of them. I really love truffles but I hardly ever get them. Mushrooms in general though are so healthy and good for you. I can’t get enough.”

Perhaps Perry could stuff more shrooms down her throat and less of her other favorite foods, which are filled with animal fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and more.

“My fave things include barbeque chicken chop at CPK Chinese, chicken salad at Chinchins, Rock shrimp and yellow tail sashimi at Nobu, Crispy beef at Mr.Chow’s, four curry chicken salad at Urth Cafe, my beloved double double at In-N-Out Burger. All so good!”

Oh, my.

Perry is engaged to vegetarian Russell Brand, who hopefully will exercise his powers of being the man of the house and say “No, no, no!” to Perry’s chicken a day and double double vice.

Hmm…was that sexist?

At any rate, kudos to Perry for liking mushrooms, a plant that has been indicated in boosting immunity.

“Studies show that mushrooms increase the production and activity of white blood cells, making them more aggressive. This is a good thing when you have an infection,” said Douglas Schar, DipPhyt, MCPP, MNIMH, director of the Institute of Herbal Medicine in Washington, DC.

So do what Schar said and load up on shiitake, portabello, cremini and even white button.

Special New York Screening of Tyler Perry's Why Did I get Married Too

Black Book Mag caught up with several celebrities at the Why Did I Get Married Too? premiere to find out where they enjoy getting good food in the feature, “Where Celebs Go Out.”

Janet Jackson and Cicely Tyson know where to combine delicious and healthy, as both ladies mentioned vegetarian and vegan restaurants as their favorites.

Janet likes Cafe Sunflower in Atlanta, Georgia as well as Veggieland.

Cicely recommends Pure Food and Wine in LA.

Cicely once said she treats her body like an expensive car, by putting only the best fuel in it.

“I mean, if you have a Rolls-Royce and you pull up to a gasoline station, you don’t put crud in it. You put the most expensive oil and gas in your car. You want it to be treated well in order for it to serve you well. We should start thinking that about this body of ours.”

Joan Jett Performs at Rally in Pittsburgh

Joan Jett and The Blackhearts latest album, Greatest Hits, is eco-friendly, much like the Blackhearts’ lead singer.

According to Tonic, the packaging is made from 100% recycled paper and biodegradable trays.

The CD is just a peek into Joan’s life of environmental friendliness, which includes not eating meat.

“I’ve always appreciated nature,” Joan was quoted as saying on a website biography. “Trees, grass, birds, sun, and even insects. I obsessively recycle. I almost never turn on lights; I pretty much live in the dark. I don’t use a lot of water. I am a vegetarian, so I avoid contributing to the major environmental damage that the meat industry creates. I hope that soon we can make sure that everything we do is earth-friendly.”

Wonder if Madonna requested bundles of these desserts to make her Sticky and Sweet tour even sweeter.
