Vegan Erykah Badu Twitters Natural Childbirth

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009 in Children, Female Musicians, Female Singers.

3rd Annual Black Girls Rock! Awards

When this gal says natural, she really means it.

Erykah Badu made a statement not long ago that her children are being raised as organic vegans and she prefers natural births.

That means no drugs, folks.

Erykah is so serious about letting everyone know she’s natural, she and parter Jay Electronica blogged about it DURING THE CHILDBIRTH! Jay wrote:

“Labor has begun. Everybody standback. No hospitals. No doctors. No medicine. Were waiting on midwife to show up. I’m doing foot squeezes and foot rubs when the contractions hit…Ok… The midwife is here now and a few family members. Feels like a scene from the color purple. She’s dialated to 8 1/2 centimeters. Getting closer. She says she feels like she’s ready to push. Feb 1. 2009 my first child, my daughter was born at 1:30 pm exactly. Its the happiest day of my life.”

Congrats to the happy couple. Welcome to world vegan baby!

Declare Yourself Rebirth of Citizenship Inauguration Kick-off Event in Washington

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi threw a big birthday bash for themselves this weekend.

Both ladies’ birthdays are very close together, Ellen turning 51 on January 26 and Portia turning 36 on January 31.

Lots of celebrities were on the invite list, like Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and her husband David Arquette, Drew Barrymore, Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Stiller.

A vegetarian meal was served, of course, and DJ Samantha Ronson, girlfriend of Lindsay Lohan, provided the tunes.

Yes, THE Samantha Ronson, who was upset because Californians voted to approve Proposition 2, a measure to improve the conditions of certain farm animals, but also voted to approve defining marriage as between and man and a woman only.

She had blogged about the results:

“I guess people care more about farm animals than they do their fellow man, that’s really sad to me.”

“Yes, i am glad that the chickens will have more room and better conditions as they wait to die, but i just think it’s frightening that people show more compassion for tomorrow’s dinner than for the chef.”

“Yup, miss piggy and chicken little may rest easy, but gay people in florida and california can no longer get married…”

Ouch! PETA wrote to Ronson asking for her support for animals just as much as they would continue their support for equal rights for gays and lesbians.

Ellen and Portia are both vegans, have expressed their concerns for animal rights, and were supporters of Prop 2.

Hopefully, if Sam continues to rub elbows with the happy vegan couple, some of that compassion might rub off on her.

John Cleese Meets Colin The Lemur At Bristol Zoo

Some of you were disappointed in our Barbie Orr/Kristine Reinhard posts. We got responses anywhere from “Who cares?” to “Take that crap down!”

But where would a celebrity blog be without posting something off color every now and then? And folks, there is a true vegetarian theme here!

Vegetarian John Cleese broke up with vegan Barbie by leaving a message on her answering machine after she blabbed all their intimate (or shall we say his intimate) details to the media.

A response to which she replied in a text message, “Look, at least it wasn’t a sex tape.”

Everyone went after Barbie (including us) after her true age was revealed to be 45 and not 27. Now Barbie is fighting back and telling people to give it a rest.

“I am a good, caring person, who does work for charity and looks after animals,” she told the UK Mirror. “I do not deserve this!”

You can view pictures of her own animals on her website.

The mob attacked Barbie for several reasons, including faulting her for exposing John’s personal life and lying about her age. However, we’d like to know why she felt she had to lie about her age to begin with.

If you look at her photos, you’ll see she’s quite an attractive woman, who’s lean, radiant, and healthy looking. Personally, we’d love to see Barbie capitalize on this and start talking more about how her vegan lifestyle keeps her looking great at 45. If she really wants publicity, she should pose for the famous organization that only works with women when they’re naked-PETA.

That’s right. Take it off, Barbie! Woohoo…Okay, back to seriousness.

Really Barbie, start talking about the vegan package and all of its health and beauty benefits just as much as you talked about John’s package.

Okay, enough of this. No more Barbie. Unless she decides to talk to us, of course. It’s time to start ragging on Skipper.

Melissa Etheridge Is Vegetarian Domestic Diva On Martha Stewart

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, February 1st, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Videos.

Stand Up To Cancer

Melissa Etheridge dropped by Martha Stewart’s studio not long ago for an episode on the holidays.

Before she appeared, Etheridge spoke to Hudson Valley Inside Out about what she might be doing on Stewart’s show.

Given that you’re a vegetarian, what I’d like to know is if you’ll teach Martha Stewart how to make something like vegan mashed potatoes—because she’ll probably be trying to stuff a goose.

Etheridge: [Laughter] I think we’re going to do something crafty. You know that I am such a crafty girl.

We’re sure Martha knows how to make some mashed potatoes without the gravy, given the fact she needed to cook for her vegetarian daughter, Alexis.

Melissa, who is also a cancer survivor, did do something crafty-a bird’s nest planter.

Watch the video of Etheridge on Martha and maybe you too can become a vegetarian domestic diva.

Veronicas’ Jess Origliasso Says Screw Fur, PETA Loves It

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 28th, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Fur.

TheBongoVirus.com New Years Eve Party - Arrivals

Jess Origliasso, member of the pop duo The Veronicas was doing green and good when she was discovered by PETA agents and asked to do a naked anti-fur ad.

Origliasso was riding the New York subway wearing a faux fur jacket that read, “F*** Fur” painted on the back.

Anyone with a message this blatant is clearly PETA ad talent, so they approached with the idea which she is strongly considering.

“Lisa and I support any foundation that is willing to educate and make a stand for animal liberation,” she told Confidential.

“Death for these animals is a horror story – the most common method used for killing foxes is electrocution. I can’t speak for Lisa, but I admire the approach to the eye-catching photo shoots PETA do to get the important message out there.

“I would definitely love to be involved in something like that.”

If she chooses to accept the offer, she’ll be following the footsteps of fellow celebrity Aussie ladies who have worked with the organization like Natalie Imbruglia, Sophie Monk, and Missy Higgins.

Not long ago, it was discovered that a Liverpool McDonald’s restaurant had pictures of Paul McCartney and other ex Beatles on its wall. The news caused quite a stir with McCartney being a vegetarian who obviously wouldn’t support the fare served at McDonald’s.

Chrissie Hynde’s vegan Italian eatery, The Vegiterranean, has got it right though: Veg people in a veg restaurant.

If you’re lucky enough to dine there or even stop by and visit, you’ll find pictures of celebrities like Joss Stone, Morrisssey, Joaquin Phoenix, Paul McCartney, and even Chrissie herself on the wall of vegetarian fame.

Some things go great together. So it’s no surprise that the duo sisterly pop group, who has worked with PETA in the past, has created matching pairs of sneakers, one black and one white, that are animal friendly.

Another series in the MacBeth studio project, Tegan and Sara have launched shoes in the Nolan category, Tegan’s black and Sara’s white.

Both sneakers are being touted as high top fashion with a grrrly edge and are scheduled to go on sale February 15th. They look pretty comfy and flexible and hopefully the high top feature will keep the snow out of your socks for the last few weeks of winter.

The two are no strangers to foot fashion, as they designed a pair of sneakers for the shoe company D.C. a few years ago.

Live Earth Media Conference

Vegan singer and musician Missy Higgins wants to treat her environmentally aware fans by rewarding them with a special unreleased version of her song, “Where I stood” from the album On a Clear Night.

If you pledge to reduce your carbon footprint by 2% in 2009, you can download the unreleased song for free.

Not to leave folks in a boat without a paddle, Missy has included 10 Ways To Decrease Your Carbon Output on her Warner Brothers Website, like buying local and organic, replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, and walking more just to name a few.

Kinda disappointing that Missy left off one of the biggest ways to have smaller carbon feet-by going vegetarian!

The idea of the pledge is taken from the Sierra Club’s 2% Solution, which theorizes that if we reduce our carbon emissions by 2% every year, by 2050, we can curb global warming and its consequences.
