Kate Middleton Could Use Peace Silk Wedding Fabrics

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, January 24th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Fashion.

Kate Middleton

With Kate Middleton and Prince William‘s wedding approaching soon, many fashion enthusiasts are speculating about the details of the dress.

The UK Daily Mail predicts it will be silk and raises questions about the ethics of such material.

If you’re the extra sensitive vegetarian who puts the ladybug you find on the organic strawberries outside in the grass or still feel guilty that harvesting plants inadvertently kills insect and rodents, you of course treat silk like leather, wool and fur, where the worms that produce it are usually boiled or roasted while inside the cocoon. One figure estimates there are 6,600 worms killed for every kilo of silk harvested.

But there is an alternative and perhaps Middleton will take advantage of it.

Actress known for her sustainable lifestyle, Livia Firth, was seen at the Golden Globes wearing a dress made with peace silk.

Firth discussed her experience on UK Vogue’s website.

“When Colin won I thought we were in a dream. I’ll bring you a round-up of the parties later too. I’m Cinderella in hand dyed indigo peace silk from Tennessee and I’m definitely at the ball!”

Peace silk is known as such because it doesn’t involve the intentional killing of the silkworm.

Alexa Chung Does “Thrift America” In New PBS Series (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 5th, 2011 in Environment-Eco-Green, Fashion, Models, Videos.

Alexa Chung is caught in yet another moral dichotomy. She likes collecting dead things even though she considers herself vegetarian. And she loves her husband and her lover because they both are incredibly stylish.

“Williamsburg is sort of like my lover, whereas London is more like my husband. I love my husband, and I’ll always be with him, but Williamsburg is so exciting.”

Thank goodness you can’t cheat when shopping, cause Chung will be perusing many vintage stores on her upcoming PBS series “Thrift America,” scheduled to air next summer.

Consignment shops, Goodwill, The Salvation Army, you name it, are all great places to lighten your footprint by taking advantage of what’s already created instead of contributing to the demand for more clothing–and more fibers, energy and unless they’re organic, more pesticides used on the crops, like cotton.

But are they a place for old furs? If you’ve given up that lifestyle, is it okay to let potentially less fortunate people or those that aren’t buying new fur coats display them? Or would you feel more comfortable donating the piece to an animal who the fur might look a little more natural on?

Kesha Holiday Greetings In Faux Fur (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, December 26th, 2010 in Fashion, Female Singers, Videos.

We may be posting Ke$ha‘s Holiday Greetings a day later, but the message she’s wearing is timeless.

It’s cold outside and symbol girl is looking kind of furry, but don’t fret. The vegetarian singer has said before she always fakes it for the camera.

“If you see me in fur, it’s always fake,” Kesha said.

While we’re not worried about Kesha’s fur coat, we are, however, concerned for the person in the background exposing his bare buns to relieve himself in the snow. After all, it’s freezing outside. The wind must be unbearable. Even worse, he’s wearing a fur coat but has not publicly declared himself real fur-free.

Take advantage of the after Christmas sales now and purchase your faux fur items from trusted sources like Donna Salyer’s Fabulous Furs.

Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis stars as Natalie Portman‘s rival in the psychological thriller about two ballerinas, “Black Swan.”

Although Kunis is Portman’s opposite in character, she’s on the same side as Portman in real life when it comes to using animals for fashion.

For her Nylon Magazine photo shoot, Kunis made sure the coat she wore wasn’t made of real fur before agreeing to wear it.

The jacket, an Elizabeth and James faux leopard print, can be viewed here. Elizabeth and James makes several faux designs, like the Faux-fur cocoon shrug.

Besides fur that didn’t come from an animal’s hide, Kunis’ fashion style includes sneakers, jeans and sweatshirts, which she explains in this video interview on Nylon TV below.

Norway Bans Fur During Oslo Fashion Week

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, December 13th, 2010 in Fashion, Fur.

Oslo Fashion Week

Norway has become the first country to ban the use of fur during its fashion week in February.

Oslo Fashion Week officials made the decision after numerous protests, including candlelit vigils by Norwegian animal rights group NOAH and collected signatures from those in the industry that refuse to work with fur, including designers, models and photographers.

Last year, the group Network for Animal Freedom uncovered investigations at several of Norway’s 330 fur farms which revealed animals not receiving proper veterinary care, even when those injuries were atrocious, such as loss of limb, tail and ear. This was one year after a similar report by the same animal rights group was released, alleging many of the same violations.
