Wal-Mart Among Top Organic Cotton Consumers In Retail

Sure, Walmart may suck at a lot of humanitarian issues, like their connection to sweatshops, denying workers fair pay, overtime, health care, maternity leave and violating labor laws in the U.S. and other countries, but when it comes to purchasing sustainable, non-toxic cotton, they’re making great strides.

According to Home Textiles Today, the retailer was one of the top organic cotton using brands and retailing in 2009, along with C&A (Belgium), Nike, Williams-Sonoma, Inc., H&M, Anvil Knitwear, Coop Switzerland, Greensource Organic Clothing Co., Levi Strauss & Co., Target, adidas, and Nordstrom.

“Many people thought the recession would mean an end to all things organic, but the market reacted in quite the opposite way,” said LaRhea Pepper, senior director and co-author of the report done by the non-profit Organic Exchange. The report states sales of organic cotton jumped 35% in the same year to $4.3 billion.

Great job Walmart. This year lets aim to be in the top 10 in those other aforementioned categories.

CNN’s African Voices recently featured a woman who started a vegan, eco-friendly shoe business in her town in Ethiopia, which not only preserves the environment and protects animals, but provides jobs to people in the village.

“One of the truly unique and exciting things about SoleRebels is that we are green by heritage, and not because some marketing folks told us to be. We maximize both recycled inputs and craft our materials in the traditional manner — the way they have always been made in Ethiopia – by hand,” said Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu, Co-Founder and Managing Director of SoleRebels, Ethiopia’s first fair trade footwear company, which incorporates hand spun cotton in the fabrics and recycled tires for the soles.

More video explaining how Alemu quit her job as an accountant and markets her products on the Internet after the break.

@BPGlobalPR

@BPGlobalPR

A mock BP Twitter account has been created, poking fun at the company’s PR attempts after the Gulf Coast oil spill incident.

@BPGlobalPR has over 65,000 followers and Tweets several times a day with humorous, snide remarks like the following:

“Btw, does anyone have Criss Angel’s email? I bet he can make this oil disappear! #bpbelievesinmagic #bpcares”

“A bird just stole my sandwich! You deserve everything you get, nature!!! #bpcares”

“Of course, bp cares about the fishing industry as well. Now, all tuna from the gulf coast comes pre-packaged in oil. #you’rewelcome #yum”

The updates serve as a nice laugh to distract from the catastrophe of the incident

The real toll on wildlife, however, is no laughing matter.

It’s estimated that over 300 birds have been killed so far due to the spill and the deaths of six dolphins found in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama since the beginning of the month are being treated as oil spill related casualties.

Giorgio Armani Honors Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio in Shutter Island

Isabella Rossellini took Sundance Channel viewers into the sex lives of spiders, ducks and anchovies with her Green Porno and Seduce Me series.

Rossellini’s shows are designed to entertain and educate, as such was the case with an episode touching on sustainable fish and the problems of overfishing.

Rossellini shares in an interview with Treehugger:

“To myself I called them Green Porno with a Conscience. This was the series called Bon Appetit, and they all start with me preparing delicious risotto with shrimp, or eating fried calamari or eating anchovies on my pizza. And then they stop and there’s a vignette on how they’re made and how they are fished, how actually they are over-fished so that we are depleting our ocean.”

Eco-Sex

Octomom Nadya Suleman said during a press event about her agreeing to hang a PETA sign on her home advocating spaying and neutering that she felt the cause was necessary–at least for four legged animals.

“I love animals and I do believe they should be spayed or neutered,” Suleman was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying. “Humans of course are much different.”

Any number of good jokes could be inserted here, but Stefanie Iris Weiss, a vegetarian for 20 years and author of a new book about greening your sex life, Eco-Sex, gives insight for why some consider getting themselves or their two legged pet fixed.

An excerpt from the book about the carbon footprint of tykes after the break.

Rachelle Carson Begley Protects Family By Living Green

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 26th, 2010 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green.

Premiere Of DreamWorks Animation's Shrek Forever After - Arrivals

Rachelle Carson Begley and her husband Ed Begley Jr. try to live as green a life as possible, although, if you tune into their Planet Green Channel show, “Living with Ed,” you’ll find they aren’t always in agreement, as Rachelle’s zest meter for an eco and veggie friendly lifestyle is always running with a little less fuel.

One area of green Rachelle doesn’t skip though is her family and home, as she told Celebrity Baby Scoop, that although she thinks men get into the green movement for energy or financial savings, women do so to protect their families.

“We have drop tolerant plants and our whole yard is filled with fruit trees. We have 4 fig trees, 3 apple trees, 3 orange and 2 lemon. We also have a vegetable garden. We live like anyone else, but we have a few more restrictions and we try a little extra to get organic foods. We’re mostly a vegetarian household too.”

Rachelle also keeps the plastics, parabens and toxic cleaning supplies out of the kitchen and bathroom.

“Look under your sinks and look what you are exposing yourself and your children to. Something like Fantastic or Tilex works instantaneously, but look at the downsides of those chemicals going into your water stream. You are breathing those chemicals and they are going onto your skin.”
