George Carlin: Picking Up Vegan Food To Go NOT Awesome!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, June 22nd, 2009 in Comedians, Food & Drink.

Jersey Girl New York Premiere

Susan Sisko at the Huffington Post got to spend a moment with late comedian George Carlin during the week he passed, which was exactly one year from today on June 22, 2008.

Sisko was getting food at the then new bakery/cafe annex to vegan restaurant Real Food Daily, when George was handed a bag of vegan food “to-go” and the guy at the counter told him, “Awesome.”

No, this wasn’t awesome and George made sure the counter boy knew it.

“No…” George said. “Picking up vegan food to-go is not awesome.” He then went into a rant about all things that were awesome, like the sun and sky.

Did George mean vegan food taste like the brown bag he took it home in? Or would he rather have ate in the restaurant, it only being “not awesome” that he had to brown bag it?

Great scholars will study these last words for centuries until a much younger, poor miso ramen eating graduate student cracks the code, upsetting them, stealing fame and fortune.

Until then, the enigma remains.

Andy Dick dressed as Ronald McDonald in a PETA protest against McDonald’s in Chicago recently.

PETA wants the company to stop its archaic method of killing chickens, which PETA says is done by electric immobilization.

There is a more humane way to kill, called Controlled-Atmosphere Killing, which involves cutting off the animal’s oxygen supply, causing them to lose consciousness with little to no pain.

“McCruelty, I’m Hatin’ It!” shouted Andy and the other protesters.

Sarah Silverman Makes Vegetarian Proclamation?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, June 20th, 2009 in Actresses, Comedians, Videos.

When we heard Sarah Silverman ordered spaghetti without the meatballs, we didn’t think much else of it.

The comedian isn’t listed on any other vegetarian websites and she’s never been an activist, so we figured she just liked her spaghetti sans cow.

Then, we got a tip from reader Anon, saying Sarah was indeed a vegetarian and had even made a video discussing how to cook vegetarian meatballs.

Here’s a clip Anon found with Sarah on The Larry Sanders Show. The caption reads, “All the guests except Sarah were served a six course wild game tasting menu, including Elk, Quayle, and Pheasant.”

One of the guests says they didn’t know Sarah was a vegetarian, to which Sarah replies, “I’m just not a carnivore.”

There’s always the chance Sarah is one of those fish eating vegetarians or has some other technicality that doesn’t make her one. And she didn’t specifically say, “I’m a vegetarian.”

The scene starts around minute 6:49.

What do you think? Is Sarah officially in the club?

Sandra Bernhard Wishes She Were Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 in Celebrity Tweets, Comedians.

Zac Posen Celebrity Departures - Fashion Week NYC

Sandra Bernhard recently Tweeted about wanting to be vegan, but not being able to cross over to that side.

“i wish i could be a vegan but i just can’t function well on that diet believe me i get it and maybe one day but for now i do the best i can!”

Wonder what’s holding Sandra back?

Sure, veganism takes more thought and planning. It requires seeking more sources of plant protein. You may even have to pop a B Vitamin here and there. But ask any vegan who’s stuck with the lifestyle and they’ll tell you it’s totally worth it to adhere to their beliefs and/or to gain the health benefits of removing dairy and eggs from their diet.

Are you a wannabe vegan who has a few humps to get over? Is it the love of cheese? Cookies and cakes bringing you down? Are you just afraid of “slipping” up every now and then?

Chime in and let everyone know!

And send some encouragement to Sandra @SandraBernhard.

We told you how Alicia Silverstone and several other celebrities had signed a letter addressed to Nobu, telling the restaurants to take endangered bluefin tuna off the menu.

Some British celebrities have gotten in on the act and created this ad to protest the consumption of the fish.

Actresses Greta Scacchi, Emilia Fox and writer Terry Gilliam bare all.

Terry is such a champ, standing there patiently while the fish gets love from Greta and Emilia.

Speaking of fish, what’s going on with this one? It isn’t bluefin. Possibly cod? And either the guy’s a complete plastic fake (but who in Hollywood isn’t) or he’s photoshopped himself in there to make his friends think two hot chicks are macking on him.

The bluefin protest is perfectly timed with the release of End of the Line, which warns that overfishing could lead to the end of seafood by 2048.

Hope Mark Malkoff Packed Lots Of Vegan Protein Bars On AirTran

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 in Comedians.

markmalkoff

Comedian and writer Mark Malkoff plans to stay on a plane and fly continuously for 30 days to break the Guinness Book of World Records and conquer his fear of flying.

His goal is not to leave the AirTran plane, so he’ll have to stock up on a month’s worth of meatless goodies, since he’s vegetarian, which ajc.com cited as being one of the potential challenges on his trip.

Malkoff is a writer for Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. Is he the reason why Stephen Colbert has poked fun of vegetarians in the past? Yeah, probably.

His previous outrageous stunts include attempting to visit all 171 Starbucks stores in Manhattan in 24 hours.

Good thing Mark’s a vegetarian to offset all those emissions, because he sure is making a big carbon footprint with 30 days of flying.

Mark’s blog and videos of the event can be viewed at markonairtran.com.

A.J. Jamal Doesn’t Curse When He Finds Bacon In His Soup

If you like to do it old school on Sundays, have we got the story for you.

Anyone remember watching In Living Color? If so, you remember A.J. Jamal, who got his big break after replacing Keenen Ivory Wayans. Jamal now rests his funny bones at Comedy Central

Removing potty mouths from the stage, A.J. says he likes to keep his show clean and doesn’t curse at all when he’s not performing. He also keeps his body clean and is a vegan.

“I could have been a hippie,” said Jamal. “I’m one of those spiritual walking beings. I’ve never cursed offstage. I’ve never cursed, never tasted alcohol and been a vegan almost all my life. Never tried drugs. It’s just part of my nature. Now my mama, she cussed up a storm.”

Never cursed offstage? C’mon, A.J. Not even when you order the potato soup and find out the menu leaves off the key ingredient of BACON in it? You just politely tell the staff to bring you something else?

A stronger man than most will be.
