Jennie Garth has written a letter to Congress in support of H.R 5504, Improving Nutrition for America’s School Children act.

Garth specifically addressed Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the house, regarding the bill.

“I’m writing to you because I am passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles. This past year, I have been working to educate and motivate children to make healthy choices,” says Garth. “But nutrition education isn’t enough. We also have to make sure that every child in American can find healthy foods in their school cafeteria.” (more…)

Nutrition and fitness experts have always warned that deprivation leads to excess eating. So it makes sense that those who are the neediest–when they finally attain food–gorge themselves on not only copious amounts of food, but the high sugar, high fat, empty carbohydrate type leading to obesity.

Lauren Bush, founder of the FEED Projects, recognizes the correlation and now that she’s started FEED USA to combat hunger in the U.S., she’s thinks it’s a perfect platform to tackle childhood obesity as the answer is not to restrict food from the obese but provide them with ample amounts of healthier choices.

“The people that are focused on ending hunger, and the people that are focused on ending obesity often don’t seem to get along – the people that are trying to end hunger are trying to get more food to people while the people trying to end obesity are trying to get less food to people,” the lifelong vegetarian said, according to Fox.

“I’ll say, “It’s a phase! It’s a phase!” I will live with it. I will love my daughter. But I will cook bacon around her every day.”

Bourdain had better get ready to grab the faux ham instead, because according to the LA Times, his daughter is a good candidate for going veg 10 years from now.

Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie is one of the greenest celebrity moms out there, known for being super-strict about buying organic products for the family, eating less meat, and composting. It’s no surprise she’s one of a slew of celebrities backing the Healthy School Meals Act, a bill that would provide regular vegetarian and dairy-free beverage options to more schools.

Richie and her partner, Joel Madden, recently opened a Los Angeles garden for school children and suggests this is yet another way government can give schools the kick they need to churn out healthy, intelligent adults.

“It’s wonderful to teach children about good nutrition and show them how to grow vegetables, but it’s even more important to ensure that they actually have an opportunity to eat these healthier foods on a daily basis.”
