Cat Cora Family Vegetarian Nights

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 8th, 2009 in Chefs, Food & Drink.

Human Rights Campaign's Annual Gala - Arrivals

Celebrity Chef Cat Cora, unlike Gordon Ramsay, doesn’t feel vegetarians are a pain at all.

In fact, sometimes The Food Network Iron Chef star and her family even, gasp, joins them!

From afterellen.com:

My wife is a vegetarian, so I have to ask: Do you find it annoying to cook for vegetarians or do you approach it as an invigorating challenge?
CC: I find it a fun challenge. In the Cora family, there are nights when we go all veggie, it is cleansing. So, I appreciate where vegetarians are coming from.

Cat’s no stranger to vegetarian cooking.

If you remember, Cat joined forces with Morningstar Farms to teach families to prepare delicious, quick, and healthier meals into the diets.

She said of the partnership:

“Morningstar Farms and I have come up with some easy ways to make eating well more manageable for the home cook. I want families to understand that good food doesn’t require hours in the kitchen.”

Cat also catered the vegan dinner served during Nigel Barker‘s screening of A Sealed Fate.

So cool that Cat practices what she preaches!

Meatless Mouthful: Gordon Ramsay Says Vegetarians Biggest Pain

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 in Chefs, Food & Drink, Meatless Mouthful.

Gordon Ramsay has an orange looking tan as he arrives at BBC Radio Two - London

“There’s no bigger pain anywhere in the world than a vegetarian”

Gordon Ramsay, on a recent episode of Hell’s Kitchen where the contestants had to make vegetarian dishes for 80 school children.

Ramsay can’t make up his mind. First, he’d rather electrocute his kids than see them go veg. Then claims his beef (pun intended) was never with vegetarians, just the chefs who didn’t know how to cook for them. At present, vegetarians are pains in the arses. More updates to come.

Celebrity chef Alton Brown is no stranger to sustainable eating, taking interest after his then five year old daughter figured out chicken on the plate used to be her cute friend.

Good for children and all their hundreds of endless questions, because Alton describes himself as 80% vegetarian.

So what’s holding Alton back?

The Piven Syndrome.

At mnn.com, Alton says he encourages eating more sustainable fish and claims to keep a can of sardines in his suitcase.

Eww! Bet that suitcase smells worse than his dirty laundry.

Still, 80% is better than nothing and Alton would like to see more people adopt “diversification and seasonality when it comes to choosing vegetables.”

There’s no better way to do seasonal than the Farmer’s Market.

Alton’s new Food Network show, The Next Iron Chef, premiered October 4.

Heather Mills V Bites The Bronx Opening [Update]

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, October 4th, 2009 in Business, Chefs, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Heather Mills Launches V-Bites Restaurant

Update: V  Bites The Bronx isn’t here yet.

Vegan foodies in the U.S. will be glad to hear that Heather Mills has opened a V Bites restaurant in the Bronx, New York.

This comes just months after the grand opening of V Bites in Hove Lagoon in the UK.

Heather personally was present at the opening yesterday afternoon.

Heather’s no stranger to the area, as she’s worked with a charity of hers, Hunts Point Alliance, serving underprivileged Bronx children and families.

Last year, Heather donated over a million dollars of vegan food to children and families in the Bronx area and has also taught weekend cooking classes.

It was rumored months ago that Heather was looking in the NY area to open her vegan restaurant, but after V Bites in the UK opened its doors, many assumed Heather was done for awhile.

Thank goodness she’s like the vegan Energizer Bunny and shows no signs of stopping.

Gordon Ramsay, the man who joked he put his kids on a fence and electrocute them if they ever became vegetarian, is featuring a vegetarian challenge during one of the final episodes of Hell’s Kitchen.

This Tuesday, October 6 2009, the final four chefs will compete in a challenge to please hungry, finicky vegetarian children. The orders will come from Felix Light, a child who has portrayed the foul mouthed chef in comical videos.

From Fox:

“The final four chefs get a pep talk by a pint-sized version of Gordon Ramsay,Felix Light, and are then given the unique challenge of preparing 80 vegetarian entrees to serve to 80 hungry guests. The surprise twist is that the guests are 80 screaming and hungry kids, who don’t necessarily love vegetables! The kids get to choose the challenge winner, who will be rewarded with a fancy makeover from a Beverly Hills salon and a lunch date with Gordon at the world-famous Nobu. When dinner service begins, two contestants are pushed to the limit and fall apart on an all-new episode of Hell’s Kitchen airing Tuesday, Oct. 6 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (HK-613) (TV-14 D, L).”

Felix Light does a good job of playing “Mini Ramsay.” Watch the clip below to see Felix protest a sausage that, in his words, tastes like “dogsh*t.”

Maybe Felix would find veggie sausages more satisfying?

Thanks to Tracie for the tip!

Meatless Mouthful: Isa Chandra Moskowitz On Baketivism

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 in Authors, Chefs, Food & Drink, Meatless Mouthful.

“Oh, you mean baketivism? I just made that word up. I think that activism isn’t what you decide to do but how it affects people. So if someone says, I’m going to become an activist! I’m going to stand on a street corner and preach about veganism! And then they go ahead and do that but no one listens and no one becomes vegan, then is that activism? On the other hand, maybe there’s a girl in the middle of nowhere who loves animals and decided to bake vegan. And then people taste her cupcakes and are like “What the hell, I’ll go vegan, too.” Obviously I think the latter is more effective, but I guess people might not see it as activism.”

—-Isa Chandra Moskowitz on a different, definitely tastier method of activism, in an interview with vegnews.com.

Burberry Front Row: Spring/Summer 2010 - London Fashion Week

Gwyneth Paltrow has just did a double on us and made vegetarian/vegan the theme for the Make section the second week in a row on her website Goop.com.

The most recent addition features an interview with Erin McKenna, founder of celebrity adored BabyCakes NYC, a bakery specializing in sugar-free, gluten-free, vegan desserts like cupcakes and cookies.

Gwyneth’s featuring Erin’s recipes for Vanilla Frosting, Chocolate Cupcakes, Lemon Poppy Teacake, and Double Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Yum!

A few highlights from Gwyneth’s interview with Erin. Don’t forget to check out our interview with Erin when you get the chance.

GOOP: Are there any recipes you are working on that you are excited about? Or are there any old classics you are still trying to master? Will there ever be a vegan, gluten-free, sugar-free Twinkie?

Erin McKenna: I just made donuts a couple weeks ago, which was almost as exciting to me as when I came up with the frosting recipe. I LOVE donuts. I think they have the same appeal as cupcakes and evoke the same feeling. When I announced that we were now serving gluten-free, vegan, soy-free donuts at the bakery everyone lost it! Everyone went into a frenzy and one guy biked from Brooklyn through heavy rain just to try one. Luckily everyone loves them and some say it’s the best thing we make. I love it!!!!!

GOOP: Is spelt gluten-free? It is often a common misunderstanding.

Erin McKenna: Spelt is not gluten-free. It’s an ancestor to wheat and contains gluten. Some people who are wheat sensitive can tolerate spelt but not everyone.

Read the entire interview and grab Erin McKenna’s recipes at Goop.com.
