Nicole Lapin is a Global Smile Ambassador for Operation Smile, the same charity that offers surgery for oral deformities to children in need that recently awarded model Christie Brinkley for her service. This Harvard educated news anchor puts a smile on her face when she frequents her favorite New York city hot spots that cater to her vegetarian lifestyle. She explained she’s likely to find something pleasurable, even in the odd hours.

“There is always passion, energy, and life in the city, even at 2 a.m. when I head to work,” Lapin said.

At Haute Living, Lapin shared the restaurants, markets and eco-friendly businesses filled with passion, energy and life.

Vegan ice cream restaurants, vegan restaurants, vegetarian sushi eateries and a certain farmers market make her list, as well as environmentally friendly ways to travel, like the ZipCar.

OPI "Pink of Hearts"

OPI "Pink of Hearts"

OPI, a nail lacquer company that does not test on animals, created a pink polish in 2007 to be promoted during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October every year. This year, according to App.com, the company made a $25,000 donation to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Besides being cruelty-free, (with some OPI polishes rumored to be vegan), the company has taken steps to make its products greener over the years.

Beginning in 2006, OPI started to reformulate its Nail Lacquers, Nail Treatments, and Nail Hardeners to remove the DBP (dibutyl phthalate) and Toluene. According to Safecosmetics.org, these 2 chemicals have functional and aesthetic uses, but have been shown to be toxic to humans.

“Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) adds flexibility and a moisturizing sheen, and helps dissolve other cosmetic ingredients. DBP is a reproductive and developmental toxin that has been linked to feminizing effects in baby boys.”

Ellen DeGeneres is the official spokesperson for Farm Sanctuary’s 2010 Adopt-A-Turkey Project. For a one time donation of $30, anyone can sponsor a turkey at Farm Sanctuary’s New York of California shelter, receive an adoption certificate, a full color photo and information about their new family member.

“Save a life this Thanksgiving, and join me in starting a new tradition by adopting a turkey instead of eating one through Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-A-Turkey Project,” DeGeneres said.

Some of this year’s adoptable turkeys include Velma, Daphne, Kima, Harley, Reese and Jordan.

The sanctuary’s Adopt-A-Turkey Project has rescued over 1,000 turkeys since its inception in 1986, placing them in loving homes through the Turkey Express Adoption event, while educating consumers on the plight of the birds in crowded factory farms and slaughterhouses.
