Annalise Braakensiek Gives “Love Lunch” To Almost Vegetarian Food

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, November 30th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink, Models.

Pride Of Australia National Medal 2009

Australian model and actress Annalise Braakensiek says health is her number one priority and claims to be a “passionate vegetarian cook.”

She’s started her own organic food delivery service, featuring her recipes, called Love Lunch.

But a closer look at Annalise’s personal culinary creations reveals her favorite meals contain fish, fish and more fish.

“My favourite breakfast is tahini and tomato with fresh rocket from the garden, on organic spelt toast,” Annalise said.

Sounds okay. But here comes the seafood.

“Then for lunch I eat seasonally, so it depends on what’s in. Generally it’s a huge salad, tuna or tofu and Asian greens, or brown rice with vegies, copious amounts of organic green vegies. Plenty of fish. I don’t eat meat. I don’t eat wheat and I don’t eat dairy.”

No meat or dairy?

Annalise could almost be vegan if it weren’t for the flipper.

Not only is eating fish bad for the environment, as many species are on the overfished list, but as the old saying goes, vegetarians aren’t suppose to eat “anything with a face.”

As one commenter on the story at smh.com said:

“How can somebody eat “plenty of fish” and then claim they don’t eat meat? Fish are animals and their flesh is meat. They’re not vegetables!”

Congratulations on Annalise’s food delivery service.

Hopefully, she’ll give more love to lunches that are completely vegetarian.

Ricky Williams

Miami Dolphins Ricky Williams is now an owner of a restaurant in the Z Ocean Hotel on Miami Beach’s Ocean Drive, PROOF.

Given the fact PROOF is co-owned, Ricky had to compromise on the menu to please his meat eating business partner, former NFL player Rudi Johnson.

But he made sure a “beefy” athlete like himself had plenty of vegetarian items to dine on that didn’t include the salad bar.

“I have to order sides because I’m a vegetarian,” Williams said. “Now I can order entrees.”

Those entrees include the “Ricky’s Picks” selections of margarita pizza, black bean burger, rice noodles and tofu and mushroom and assorted vegetables risotto.

PROOF opened with an invitation only party on November 17 and has been branded the “hip new tasty, yet health conscious restaurant and lounge.”

PROOF is located at 1458 Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, Florida.

Jason Schwartzman Never “Bored To Death” With BabyCakes NYC

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, November 19th, 2009 in Actors, Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Premiere Of "Fantastic Mr. Fox" - Arrivals

We’ve heard before the Bored To Death star Jason Schwartzman loves Erin McKenna‘s NYC bakery, Babycakes.

Tribecafilm.com recently spoke with Schwartzman who confirmed BabyCakes was still his baby, along with some other New York hot spots.

“Oh, my God! Well, Babycakes is heaven on earth, shall we say? I love the cupcakes and the food and the cookies and, in fact, Babycakes always sends me cookies when it’s the Super Bowl for my guests and stuff, but what I also love about Babycakes is their M.O., like the way Erin McKenna (who owns it) did it—she had a dream and made it come true. It’s really inspiring.”

“So besides Babycakes, my other favorite places are—you know the store Opening Ceremony? What I like about Opening Ceremony is, I don’t particularly look great in all those clothes, but it’s nice because it’s a place where it’s kind of going to like an art house movie theater, where you can just see lots of different movies and see what lots of people are up to and what they’re thinking… I mean, they have very wearable clothes, but they have extremes of all different kinds of things—things that are very forward and very beautiful and great designers that you wouldn’t see in other places. So what I like about it is just going through there and flipping through the clothes and saying, Wow, so this person had this idea to take this color, put it with that color, and stitch it like that…”

Film Forum is another place, and I like the place teany [a vegan restaurant and tea shop co-owned by Moby, currently closed because of a fire]…. I’d say Babycakes, Opening Ceremony, Other Music, and I like Southside Guitars and Rivington Guitars.”

The recently acquired by Heather Mills Redwood Wholefood Company has been named UK’s Most Ethical Vegetarian Food Supplier for the 4th year in a row.

Four years a winner?

Must be like the intense pressure of keeping a 4.0 GPA.

The Ethical Company Organization (ECO) lists the maker of vegetarian foods in its latest edition of The Good Shopping Guide, an ethical reference book.

Redwood received a 91% in its Ethical Company Index, which was the highest score received based on the company’s policies and actions towards the environment, human rights, and animal welfare.

“Concern for the environment, human rights and animal welfare has always been at the heart of everything Redwood does,” Heather said. “We pride ourselves in offering the very best in ethical meat-free foods that help people adopt a kinder, more compassionate lifestyle.”

“I’d particularly like to thank the incredibly loyal and conscientious employees at Redwood, who believe passionately in all that they do, for their endless support and enthusiasm, because they have made the company what it is today.”

Linda McCartney Foods and Quorn are other vegetarian brands featured in the guide, but received lower scores than Redwood.

Rob Schneider Spotted At Angelica Kitchen

Rob Schneider Hosts A DVD Signing Of "Big Stan"

We got an exclusive tip that Rob Schneider was spotted at vegan restaurant Angelica Kitchen in NYC recently.

Months ago, we learned Rob would love to do a commercial for Hormel vegetarian beans and weenies.

Angelica Kitchen serves vegan food that’s a little more fancy than beans and weenies like Miso Soup, the Tempeh Reuben Sandwich, and Marinated Tofu Sandwich.

If you absolutely can’t do without your beans, there’s also a 3 bean chili.

Now you know you might see Rob there as well.

Thanks to Will for the tip!

2nd Annual NOFA-NY Luncheon - New York City

Deirdre Imus launched her own line of green cleaning products, Cleaning the Greening, for households and hospitals years ago.

Now she’s ready to green clean the world as the products are set to enter the global marketplace.

The wife of radio host Don Imus has been a vegan for 25 years and says its was quite natural to combine her passion for health and green living into a business.

A few excerpts from a recent interview with Anna Clark of Greenbiz.com:

AC: Why are toxin-free cleaning products critical to safeguarding our health?
DI: Cancer is still the leading cause of death by disease in children. And cancer isn’t the only epidemic. One in six kids is obese. One of six kids has asthma. One in eight children is born premature. One out of 60 boys is diagnosed with autism. We’ve seen rapid growth in Tourette syndrome and diabetes. Another chronic disease growing among children is arthritis.

AC: How did you execute your vision?
DI: I approached Hackensack University Medical Center to do a pilot program. In 2000, the word green wasn’t even on the map, so I didn’t expect it to be an easy sell. I walked into the CEO John Ferguson’s office with a stack of research. He stopped me in my tracks and told me to go do it. That is literally how I got started ‘greening the cleaning.’

AC: How can someone become a distributor?
DI: Interested distributors can get information at www.DIenviro.com or call and speak to Jim Ronchi or Don O’Hagan.

Gisèle Theriault "The Barber's Daughter" and Alicia Keys

Gisèle Theriault took her passion for crafting jewelry and turned it into a profitable business, The Barber’s Daughter.

It all started when Theriault met Alicia Keys backstage at a concert when she was just starting to operate the business.

Keys liked the jewelry so much, she helped spread the news and not only is Oprah Winfrey wearing her bling, but she has five employees and the same publicist as Keys.

But is the Barber’s Daughter also a vegan daughter?

From macleans.ca:

“A few days before the Black Ball, Theriault sat in the sun-splashed kitchen of her home—a three-storey semi that doubles as the headquarters for her company, the Barber’s Daughter—and served a slice of vegan pumpkin pie and empowering tea.”

Theriault’s collections includes earrings, bracelets, necklaces, rings and watches.
