Blair Griffith “Miss Colorado” Crowns Homeless Animals As Winners

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011 in Animal Issues, Models.

Blair Griffith is a beauty queen who’s Cinderella story resembles what happens after midnight and the fairy tale collapses.

Her mother had a heart attack and had to undergo several medical procedures which set the family back financially, eventually causing them to lose their home and move in with relatives. To make matters worse, Griffith’s job was with one of the Sak’s Fifth Avenue stores the company chose to close.

But despite these hard times, Miss Colorado still plans to compete in the Miss USA competition in June. Being a pagent contestant, Griffith knows competition can wreak havoc on someone’s well-being. That’s why she hopes to level the playing field for the millions of dogs and cats in shelters waiting for homes by writing an editorial encouraging adoption.

Hard to imagine a year in America without football season, but if players and owners can’t come to an agreement, we might say kiss off to kick-off.

And that may be good for chickens and the environment.

According to NFL Lockout, each NFL city could potentially lose $160 million dollars and 115 thousand jobs would be affected if football season is cancelled.

One of those businesses involves chicken wings.

Olivia Munn appeared on The Today Show for St. Patrick’s day with host Hota Kotb.

The topic turned to the subject of whether or not some brides were happy with their proprosals. According to one poll, 1 in 4 women hated their proposals.

Kotb begins discussing her proposal, which involved a horse-drawn carriage in New York’s Central Park.

Yes, she dared to mention she enjoyed a horse-drawn carriage to the same Olivia Munn who’s spoken out about several animal welfare issues, including circus animals and horse-drawn carriages. Here’s how the conversation went:

“Did you guys just watch an 80s chick flick and then go off, and then did you realize that it’s really horrible to ride in those carriages?” Munn asked.

Meatless Mouthful–Graham Hill On Saving Cute Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, March 18th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Celebrity Tweets, Flexitarian.

“Cute animals are treated better than uglier ones. What gives? It’s not like we’re sleeping with them. Most of us, anyway.”

Graham Hill, founder of green site Treehugger.com and Weekday Vegetarianism, a flexitarian eating plan that only allows meat on the weekends.

Besides being “saved” in terms of adoptability at shelters and not ending up on the dinner plate, depending on the country’s culture, cute animals may also be hogging all the conservation dollars meant to save all threatened species. In the past, the cuter ones haveĀ received protection from more non-government organizations and more funds from the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

Slate discusses a paper in Human Biology by David Stokes that examined the cute traits of penguins and found small differences like a shading around the eyes determined what animal walked the cute and ugly line. Stokes suggested that conservationists take the “ugly” animals and focus on their cuter parts to draw attention to them and hopefullly, generate efforts and funds to protect the species.

Sounds like a good, simple idea. Let’s start practicing with one of the uglies. How many cute features can you find in the adorable Aye-Aye below?

When a 19-year old woman slammed her sister’s pet hamster onto the floor, ASPCA animal police arrested her, charges were filed and she spent a night at Riker’s Island prison.

Yet this type of behavior occurs in farms around the country routinely. One group’s random undercover cruelty investigation found abuse in all 10 of the chosen farms or slaughterhouses it chose to visit.

Mark Bittman discussed this irony in one of his recent New York Times column, “Some Animals Are More Equal Than Others.”

Nothing turns a meat eater vegetarian faster than having to prepare their own dead animal for dinner, right?

At least that’s how it would be for Alexia Echevarria of Real Housewives of Miami.

For the Cuban dinner party the couple threw, Alexia and her husband personally went to the farm to hand-pick the meal. When it comes to actually cooking the animal–a full sized pig–Alexia cannot stand to look at it or offer any assistance as her husband breaks the hips and puts butters in the slits.

Not even covering up the pig’s face can make her detach and think of the animal as food.
