Candice Bergen Reading Face On Your Plate: The Truth About Food

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 in Actresses, Authors.

MoMAs 41st Annual Party In The Garden

If you’re looking for a book to add to your summer reading list, why not pick up Face On Your Plate: The Truth About Food by Jeffrey Mousaieff Masson.

The book details myths about meat eating and gives reasons why it isn’t natural or healthy.

It’s been on Candice Bergen’s summer reading list and she seems to agree with everything Masson says, calling it, “a guide to ethical eating that basically confirms everything I have felt about eating meat for 35 years.”

Technically, Candice is a self-proclaimed half-assed vegetarian, because she still eats chicken. But wait, chicken is meat.

Maybe Masson’s book will help Candice see chicken faces the next time she grabs her plate.

Alison Lohman’s Kitten Sacrifice Drove Her To Tequila

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 in Actresses.

Drag Me To Hell Photocall - 2009 Cannes Film Festival

Alison Lohman’s new movie, Drag Me To Hell, has her character sacrificing a kitten in a futile attempt to save her soul.

Alison’s character, Christine, is upset during the movie after she learns this could possibly save her soul because she’s a vegetarian and animal lover.

Lohman’s also both veg and owns cats and said that scene, along with a few other situations that occurred during filming, upset her so much it drove her to drinking.

“There’s a scene where the key to ridding myself of this curse may be sacrificing my cat. I guess I don’t have to tell you that no cat was really harmed during filming. But I have three cats at home, and I told Sam, ‘Look, I can’t do this scene because I’m a cat lover. We’re going to have to cut it out.’ And he said, ‘OK.’ Then we were filming and he went, ‘We’ll just try it.’ I can’t believe I went along.”

“It was sometimes unbearable, especially since I’m in almost every scene in the film. I had to have tequila shots every night just to get to sleep. I’m not kidding.”

Meatless Mouthful: Daryl Hannah On Choosing One Cause

Screening Of Home At Stella McCartneys Store - Arrivals

“You know, a lot of people say: ‘What are you? An environmentalist? A humanitarian? We’re confused.’ They want to put you in a little box. They don’t understand unless you pick one thing and that’s your thing — unless you say: ‘I’m fighting for all shoes to be vegan shoes.’ I just can’t work that way — it’s all interconnected to me, and what I’d like to do is help people understand that interconnection — that if you buy a T-shirt from a chainstore, it may have been made with sweatshop labour, it may have been made by little kids, it definitely took more than nine years of drinking water to make that T-shirt, and it probably was processed with a whole bunch of chemicals as well. That’s sort of what my challenge is — to help people understand that everything you do, or everything you don’t do, has an effect.”

—-Actress Daryl Hannah, in an interview with independent.ie, on what she says when people ask if she has a focus.

It’s hard for an environmentalist to eat steak and chicken every day and not look like a hypocrite. Ditto for vegetarians who don’t buy leather-free shoes. And whether you buy the locally grown produce that took less fuel to get to the dinner table or make the choice to walk those few blocks instead of revving up the car-everything has an effect.

Charlize Theron Fights Pet Breedism

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, June 12th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

The Simon Wiesenthal Centers Annual National Tribute Dinner

Singer-songwriter Nellie McKay told us last month during our interview with her that people need to forget the breeds and go for the mutts!

Charlize Theron agrees!

The actress recently donned a “Fight Breedism” T-shirt while walking along the beach with a cute, celebrity mutt alongside her.

Theron was modeling a new T-Shirt available through PETA, which can be purchased online.

The shirt educates as well as makes a fashion statement, including facts like 8 million cats and dogs taken to animal shelters, but less than half are ever adopted.

We don’t have to go into details about what happens to the ones that aren’t adopted, do we?

Get your shirt and spread the word that buying animals really does kill them.

Anthony Bourdain On Gwyneth Paltrow: A Ham Refusing Bitch

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 11th, 2009 in Actresses, Chefs.

2005 TCA Tour Day 5 - NCTA

Gwyneth Paltrow is no vegetarian saint.

But while filming Spain…On the road again with Mario Batali, she did refrain from eating many meats, including ham.

And Anthony Bourdain thinks she’s such a bitch for doing so.

From Ecorazzi.com:

“While on a panel with fellow foodie Mario Batali at Seattle’s Paramount theater last weekend, Bourdain poked fun at Batali’s PBS series Spain… On the Road Again; which featured the chef and Paltrow on a culinary tour of Spain. “Why would you go to Spain with the one bitch who refuses to eat ham?””

Now we know how he really feels about Paltrow.

Jerk? Funny? A little bit of both?

Personally, we’d like to see Gwyneth be an even bigger bitch and refuse every animal.

Alicia Silverstone Set To Appear At NYC Wine And Food Festival

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 11th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

Premiere Of Tetro - Arrivals

The New York City Wine and Food Festival isn’t until October, but good wine events require proper planning, so time to mark your calendars and cancel the family reunion.

This year’s list of celebrities include well know celebrity chefs like Giada De Laurentiis and Guy Fieri. But there are some non-foodie celebs in the lineup, including Alicia Silverstone.

Founder and director of the festival, Lee Schrager explained that the festival week coincides with the release of Silverstone’s vegan diet book. Plus, it’s all about the diversity. You know there will be vegan drunks, or uh, wine connoisseurs there who would love to see Alicia.

“I was having lunch with a good friend of mine, [book publisher] Pam Krauss, and she said she had Alicia Silverstone’s book coming out on the exact days of the festival. It’s a vegan cookbook, and it’s very funny because if you go to a lot of vegan Web sites, you’ll see “Alicia Silverstone.” She’s obviously big in the vegan world. The fact that someone is a vegan doesn’t mean they can’t go to a wine tasting. So I think it’s all about diversity.”

No, being a vegan doesn’t mean forgoing the alcohol, but not all alcohols are vegan.

Some wines contain or use animal ingredients in the production process, such as isinglass (fish bladder), gelatin, egg albumen, casein (milk), and chitin (shells of crabs or lobsters).

audrina-burger1

Audrina Patridge is not a vegetarian.

But as Deceiver points out, she’s done some work for PETA (remember the animal adoption ad?) where the ad tagline is, “Buying animals means killing animals.”

Guess Audrina feels if they’re already dead, it’s okay to buy them.

Following in the footsteps of Padma Lakshmi, Audrina is the latest celebrity to partake in burger whoredom in a national franchise, starring in an ad for Carl Jr. $6 Teriyaki burger.

“I had an absolute blast shooting,” said Audrina, according to PEOPLE. “It was my first experience shooting a spot with food, and when I pulled up, I was literally salivating looking at all the rows and rows of perfect burgers waiting for me!”

“I was cracking up because I would take a bite, and almost immediately a food handler with white gloves would have a brand new burger ready.”

Audrina will have a spot in an upcoming movie, Sorority Row, this fall.

Since she put so many cows on death row for this commercial, we suggest all animals run for the Hills before it’s too late.
