2009 Heart Of Green Awards

So much chatter is going on about Alicia Silverstone‘s upcoming book, The Kind Diet, that some may have forgotten about another big project of hers debuting this year.

As we brought you the news earlier, Alicia has teamed up with EcoTools to create a line of eco-friendly cosmetic tools.

Besides being animal-free,  the materials are also made from recycled fibers.

Alicia took a moment to talk to Chloe Jo Berman of girliegirlarmy.com about animal and environmentally friendly cosmetics.

CHLOE JO: You are such a tireless activist for the animals and the environment, and a prime example of how living ethically makes you emanate glitter and beauty! We love that you totally get the power of offering luxurious and glamorous tools (whether it be food, fashion, or literature) to entice people into living a more cruelty-free and green lifestyle. What inspired you to make vegan brushes and make up bags specifically, rather than a shoe line or clothing line… or is that coming soon?

ALICIA SILVERSTONE: Regular make up brushes are often made with animal hair, and i promise the animals didn’t sit in a salon and get a little trim – you can be sure it was a painful horrid experience. Anywhoo, the other side of the coin is that synthetic brushes although way better option than animal hair, they are not awesome for the enviroment either, but still better. And actually the best option (if I do say so myself) is my eco tools, ’cause they are free of animal – but also using bamboo and recycled metal and the kindest synthetic hair for the planet possible to date that works great. So they are cruelty-free, but also the most enviromentally friendly option out there. And the bags are all made with hemp and veg inks and recylced plastics for the lining are as pretty and stylish as it gets, while still being green!

Alicia’s beauty tools hit Target and Wal-Mart this holiday season 2009.

Tropic Thunder premiere

“If environmentalists who are meat eaters were given the whole truth about how many of our resources are wasted on meat production, they’d be horrified. To create one 16-ounce steak it takes six months worth of showering water. I don’t see how an organic farmer uses less water. And what about the methane? Just because you’re raising an organic cow doesn’t mean it doesn’t fart.”

—-Alicia Silverstone, in an interview with Ecostiletto.com, on the impact meat eating has on the environment and the gasses given off by cows in the pastures.

There you have it. Everybody farts. Even the cows. There’s no reason to be ashamed anymore.

Elizabeth Hurley Cured Meat Snack Time, Animal Hide Sexy Time

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 in Actresses, Not So Vegetarian.

GQ Men Of The Year Awards at The Royal Opera House in London, UK

Elizabeth Hurley has never landed on most vegetarians’ favorite celebrity list.

Too many things keeping her from breaking in the top 10, like her organic “healthy” dinners containing meat and the Blackglama fur ads.

Hurley has admitted to liking cured meat like beef jerky. And sex on a sheepskin. Oh, we’re sorry, that was TMI-too much mammal information.

“It’s an excellent thing for anyone on the Atkins diet. I did a movie in South Africa with Ice Cube and it’s all I ate. I was very thin – 121lbs.”

If that’s not enough to make your hurl-ey, try envisioning Liz au naturel on an animal rug.

The actress admits to enjoying sex on sheepskin rugs by her fireplace.

“Next time you go to someone’s house in the country, be sure to check out if they have warm, possibly fluffy, rugs in front of their fire.

“No prizes for guessing why they’re there! I can also shyly confess to having two sheepskin rugs in front of all my fireplaces!”

Let’s just hope dear ol’ Liz doesn’t run out of breath during her, uh, vigorous activity.

Cured meats have been linked to increase chances of developing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Illeana Douglas “Easy To Assemble” Vegetarian Swedish Meatballs

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 in Actresses, Film & TV, Food & Drink, Videos.

Illeana Douglas

Illeana Douglas stars in a web-based series, Easy To Assemble, about a woman who’s fed up with Hollywood and decides to work in an IKEA store instead.

Easy to Assemble filming takes place in an actual IKEA store and involves lots of Swedish meatballs.

And apparently it was easy to assemble a veggie meatball to accommodate Illeana.

“I’m a vegetarian!” Illeana said. “They were kind enough to make for me vegetarian meatballs. So everything we’re doing has been with IKEA, [and we] lucked out that we’ve all become friends. It’s been a real playground for all of us. We’re constantly inspired by things that happen to them, or their philosophy, and it influences a lot of the work.”

Illeana is working on another web spin-off, Sparhusen, which follows a faux Swedish band.

Watch the clip below to see Ileana chow down on her faux meatballs.

Ana Ortiz Anti McDonald’s National Council Of La Raza Letter

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

Tiffany & Co. and InStyle Honor Maria Sharapova and Frank Gehry

Ana Ortiz is asking the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), a Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States, to avoid any future partnerships with McDonald’s, on grounds of both inhumane animal and human treatment.

The NCLR’s 2009 press conference was sponsored by the fast food giant, so Ana took the opportunity to write to the council.

“I was shocked to learn that McDonald’s sponsored the National Council of La Raza’s (NCLR) 2009 conference in Chicago. As an organization dedicated to improving the lives of Hispanic Americans, you certainly must be aware that McDonald’s has very close ties to an industry that’s notorious for exploiting Hispanic immigrants—not to mention the fact that the company is responsible for the suffering and abuse of millions of animals every year.”

“The slaughterhouse is a dismal place for workers. The dim lighting and filthy air—which is filled with dust, debris, and feathers from terrified birds’ flapping wings—leads to accidents and injuries. Chickens struggle, peck, and scratch in resistance and frequently vomit and defecate as a result of stress. Poorly paid slaughterhouse workers—many of whom are Hispanic immigrants—usually receive no medical benefits despite their susceptibility to on-the-job injuries. Because companies will often fire these employees rather than pay for medical care, many workers do not seek treatment for their injuries out of fear of losing their jobs.”

Alicia Silverstone “The Kind Life” Website

The Kind Diet

Alicia Silverstone is launching a brand new website, thekindlife.com, which will offer all her advice for all products green and vegan.

Kind of like Gwyneth Paltrow‘s Goop.com without the Thanksgiving turkey hints.

The site is pretty much bare bones now, but will get busy on October 13, the same day Silverstone’s book, The Kind Diet, is set for release.

From EcoStiletto.com:

“I created a website called TheKindLife.com to get people hooked on all my groovy latest finds—that will happen around the time of the book. I love Tammy Fender and Suki—those are my favorite skin care lines. Josie Maran lip gloss and eyeshadows [link]. Kiss My Face and Giovanni for shampoo. Desert Essence for conditioner—it smells so yummy! And Pharmacopia moisturizer. It’s all organic, except for a teeny bit of parabens. That’s my one naughty treat. I buy it like once a year. It’s smells so yummy! We have to all write to them so they’ll take the parabens out.”

We’ll be bookmarking this one for sure!

Stand Up To Cancer - Arrivals

It’s October and that means Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Fitsugar.com has compiled a slideshow of 10 celebrity breast cancer survivors, and two of the ladies are vegetarian favorites, Melissa Etheridge and Christina Applegate.

Doctors found a lump in Melissa’s breast in 2004 and she sought chemo and radiation treatment, performing bald at a Janis Joplin tribute in 2005.

After Christina Applegate’s breast cancer was detected, she decided to remove both breasts and treated herself to a brand new pair of manufactured boobs after her surgeries.

As we’ve cited before, vegetarians tend to have lower death rates from cancer than meat eaters.
