An Evening with Nurse Jackie

As previously reported, Jennie Garth has become involved with Veggie Central, in an effort to help parents get their children to eat more vegetables.

Garth said she was surprised to learn that so many kids’ idea of fruit is a fruit rollup and that vegetables are often scarce on the plate.

“I was shocked to find out how many kids are not provided with fruits and vegetables every day, which is why I was happy to be a part of this campaign.”

Besides growing her own produce at home, Garth also employs techniques to sneak vegetables into meals, something she learned from Missy Chase Lapine‘s book, The Sneaky Chef, according to Celebrity Baby Scoop.

“We have our own garden and have a great appreciation for fresh vegetables at our house, but I have been known to use The Sneaky Chef cookbook now and then.”

Garth said that is she could do some things about parenting over again, she would only provide her children with organic foods and wishes she’d never introduce her daughter Fiona to sugar.

Mayim Bialik has become the official woman of the house and gotten her husband to stop eating meat!

The former Blossom actress and PhD holder told Parent Dish, “My husband and I read “Eating Animals” by Jonathan Safran Foer, and my husband has not eaten meat for four months.”

Similarly, Mayim’s other two favorite men are following dad’s lead.

“The boys do not eat dairy or meat or eggs. We also have a kosher home.”

Mayim’s method for getting her family to adopt a meatless lifestyle is accomplished through education, rather than by setting hard fast rules that are expected to be followed.

“It’s actually helpful that my son understands that different people eat different things for different reasons.”

Daryl Hannah Interested In EPA Lifting Ethanol Fuel Limit

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, March 28th, 2010 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green.

Daryl Hannah Has A Board Game

Daryl Hannah lives in a solar powered home that she calls a “misfit circus” to abandoned and disabled animals.

Hannah’s use of natural energy to run her home is just one of several ways the vegetarian actress does her part to protect the environment.

Hannah arrived at a recent radio program in Santa Cruz with the 1979 Pontiac Trans Am she drove in Kill Bill, a sports car she has converted to run off 85% ethanol.

Federal regulations currently limit the amount of alcohol per gallon of gasoline to 10%.

The EPA is considering allowing states to increase this limit to 15%, but opponents argue that increasing the blend causes corrosion and overheating.

Although some doubt the benefits of ethanol to the environment, David Blume, an ecologist from the Santa Cruz area calls Hannah a “guru” and insists more education is needed.

“People just don’t know that alcohol fuel is a possibility,” Blume, who was later scheduled for a press conference encouraging the EPA to lift the restriction.

Alexandra Paul‘s brother went to prison for his involvement in burning down a horse slaughter house.

The activist was always known to his sister for being passionate about animal rights, but like many who serve behind bars, he’ll come out changed for the better–this time healthwise.

Jonathan gave up smoking, lost weight and now teaches spinning and boot camp classes to fellow inmates.

He also ran his first marathon–by doing 95 laps around the track at the medium security correctional facility he now calls home.

Alexandra writes in the Huffington Post:

“With all the sadness and pain that a family feels when a loved one goes to prison, there just may be a silver lining. My brother will come out still the passionate animal rights activist I love and admire so much, but he will have added marathon runner to his life resume. And probably at least 4 years to his life for having quit smoking the day he entered prison.”

Having never exercised regularly before, Jonathan gradually worked up to 6 miles a day, and caught the attention of the guards as not only the “vegan who reads all those books about global warming,” but also a runner

As a environmental activist, Jonathan’s decision to quit smoking sets just as good of an example as refraining from animal products.

Not only do cigarettes pollute indoor air quality and put everyone at risk for health problems, some data suggests cigarette butts are the  most littered item in the U.S. and account for 50% of the litter in the developed world.

Whether it’s a patch, gum, buddy system or replacing a cig by munching on celery, investigate how to quit smoking today to be a better steward of the earth.

82nd Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Woody Harrelson taught fellow vegan screen star Alicia Silverstone what products she should be using in her bathtub.

According to Metro, Harrelson was entertaining Silverstone with his family and the actress was going to take a bath outside.

“Woody said, “I don’t want my kids getting in your bath. Look at all the products you’re using.”

“You can’t even read the ingredients and they’re going into your skin.”

“That was a big awakening for me. That was the day I learned the importance of natural products.”

If you don’t have a famous actor teaching you the propers of cleanliness, there’s always the Cosmetics Database at cosmeticsdatabase.org.

Going to the home page and typing in the name of a brand or product will give you a score of how safe the product is for your skin based on ingredients shown to cause health problems.

The greater the score, the greater the hazard and you probably should try another product.

Ingredients like Butylene Glycol, may score lower with reactions listed such as skin irritation, while DMDM Hydantoin or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (both found in shampoos and soaps) indicate higher risks.

Ginnifer Goodwin Writes In Protest Of “Happy Cow” CMAB Ads

You’ve seen those commercials for “Happy Cows” sponsored by the California Milk Advisory Board where cows are seen roaming freely in the pasture, females get a chance to gossip while the bulls attempt to speak French in hopes procreating before slaughter time.

Not everyone agrees with the idyllic picture portrayed by the CMAB and Big Love actress Ginnifer Goodwin has written her thoughts to the Federal Trade Commission regarding what animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says are deceptive practices in these campaigns.

“In show business, we often have good reason for making people believe things that aren’t true, but there is no excuse for the CMAB’s misrepresentation of the milk industry,” writes Goodwin. “[C]onsumers deserve better than to be fed cheerful lies about ‘happy cows.'”

Goodwin goes on to say that the reality is most cows in California are confined in crammed spaces filled with dirt and their own excrement, and suffer udder infections as a result of being forced to produce unnatural amounts of milk induced through administering drugs.

Watch the video below to see an example of the CMAB commercials.
