Local and sustainable food champion Alice Waters has gathered 30 different chefs to contribute to her latest book, In The Green Kitchen: Techniques To Learn By Heart.

You’ll recognize some of the vegetarian contributors, such as Vegan Soul Kitchen author Bryant Terry, which may explain why Waters, although not vegetarian, has compiled a collection of recipes and techniques helpful to the mixed eating household or individual.

As Treehugger states in their Weekday Vegetarian Feature, “This is also a terrific book if you are eating less meat. There are recipes for meat and fish here, but there are many more recipes featuring beautiful produce, beans, eggs, breads and pastas.”

The theme for In The Green Kitchen is simplicity, both in recipes and technique, so there’ll be no need to stock items for a 30 ingredient dish.

Besides Terry, other contributing authors include Anna Lappé.

Jimmy Choo for H&M Launch Party

Gabby Reece was invited to help with The Teaching Garden by her friend and wife of Tobey Maguire, Jennifer Meyer.

The Teaching Garden teaches students to grow their own produce while emphasizing math and science skills.

The goal is to get 1,000 Teaching Garden programs in schools, but parents can start instructing at home, something Reece is already doing.

“My kids get to live in Hawaii and California,” Reece told Celebrity Baby Scoop.

“They play out in the dirt all the time. One of their favorite things to do each morning when we are in Hawaii is to pick fruit from the trees: lemons, avocados and papayas. My 2 year old likes lettuce and my 6 year old, well it’s a constant negotiation. Broccoli seems to be the winner so far.”

Of course, it’s great when the students can teach mom and dad a thing or two about planting, cultivating and harvesting in the home.

“Another important message is that the learning goes from the kids back to the parents. The children can teach their parents what they have learned about nutrition and fitness and hopefully have an impact.”

"Spain... On The Road Again" Television Series Launch

“The world’s current consumption levels will have us raising 120 billion animals a year by 2050. This number would require using more land for agriculture than exists. And even if we could pilfer the land or [devise] technology to achieve this, it’s unlikely the atmosphere, land, and water could handle it.”

—-author Mark Bittman, explaining in the April 2010 issue of Vegetarian Times why eating meat and other animal products is not sustainable.

Pamela Anderson‘s milkshake will bring all the boys to the yard, or at least to Millions of Milkshakes on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, as she’ll be making a vegan milkshake for the company on Friday April 9 at 3 PM.

Pamela’s vanilla-coconut-pineapple blend will be appropriately titled the “Pamela Anderson.”

Pamela told Millions of Milkshakes:

“I am working very hard and having the time of my life on Dancing with the Stars – I have made some great new friends and tried to learn some cool new steps – but I did want to take a few minutes to prove that one can create a truly delicious treat without having to rely on any animal products in the process. It is going to be a Vegan Vanilla Coconut Pineapple shake! I’ve always liked to shake things up so I’m thrilled to create the first vegan item on the menu – and at the same time I hope to get to meet some fans and to thank everyone for their support and their votes.”

Pamela joins the list of other celebrities who have made signature shakes at Millions of Milkshakes, including Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan, The Kardashians, Reggie Bush, Gwen Stefani and Leonardo DiCaprio.

European Premiere of Kick Ass held at the Empire Cinema, Leicester Square

Jamie Oliver has been trying to change America’s attitudes on food in his new ABC television series Jamie Oliver’s Food Resolution.

Jamie shared on Oprah.com some of what he considered kitchen essentials, and many, if not most items are vegetarian and vegan friendly.

Plant based proteins like garbanzo, kidney and cannellini beans are shelf stable and great in a salad, with crackers or vegetables or straight from the can.

Seeds, dried pasta, and couscous offer alternatives when you are tired of legumes.

And spices like cumin and curry offer a twist to foods when traditional salt and pepper doesn’t do the trick.

Visit the site for Jamie’s entire list of kitchen essentials, which you can download and print in PDF format to take on your next shopping trip.

Mark Bittman, part time vegetarian and author of books like Food Matters: A Guide to Conscious Eating, recently appeared on the online television show about food and sustainable living, Cooking Up A Story.

Bittman discussed the importance of eating in the home and said people used to cook years ago.

Then frozen and other convenience foods took over and people, not growing up making things from scratch, looked at cooking “as if there was some sort of mystique to it.”

Take the mystique out of cooking and grab a few good vegetarian cookbooks at your local bookstore or visit an vegetarian online forum for more ideas.

Miley Cyrus was not type casted in her latest movie, The Last Song.

Miley’s character, Ronnie Miller, is a teenager who seeks to reunite with her father one summer, all while falling in love in this coming of age film.

Ronnie’s also a vegetarian.

Miley was once. Before she ended that deal like a bad recording contract.

She was quoted as saying, “I like fried food. I wasn’t able to give up the meat. I want a steak or a burger from McDonald’s every once in a while. A double-double is just way too good. I’ve still got to eat. I’ve got the rest of my life to stay healthy.”

Is it too much to ask that she stay in character even though The Last Song has wrapped up filming?

Moby Answers If Animal Agriculture Is Okay

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, April 6th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Books, Food & Drink.

24th Genesis Awards - Arrivals

The book edited by Moby and Miyun Park on factory farming, Gristle, isn’t meant to be a vegetarian or vegan converting source.

As co-editor Park said, “This book isn’t about veganism, and it isn’t about bringing down the animal agriculture industry.”

In fact, some contributors are even part of the meat industry.

So why would Moby, a vegan for two decades, decide to partake in something that doesn’t outright condem using animals as food?

Moby answered to Philly.com:

“The book is about presenting people with the facts and ramifications of factory farming and large-scale industrial animal production. What people do with the information is up to them. There are so many different types of animal agriculture, from the pernicious to the relatively benign, so it’s hard for me to make any huge blanket statements.”

Bottom line is, Moby isn’t using Gristle to tell you if consuming or using animals to produce food is okay.

That’s a decision you’ll have to come to on your own.
