Michael Jackson Tigers, Thriller And Sabu, At Shambala Preserve

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, June 26th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Male Singers.

Michael Jackson fans pay their respects

Actress and animal rights activist Tippi Hedren  volunteered to take in Michael Jackson’s tigers, Thriller and Sabu, after the singer could no longer keep them at his Neverland Ranch a few years ago.

The tigers live at the Roar Foundation Shambala Preserve.

“We have so suddenly lost one of the most beautiful and enchanting entertainers on our planet,” Hedren said.

“Michael Jackson was not only loved by the people of the world, for his incomparable talent, he was loved by the magnificent wild animals for which he provided the most beautiful home at his Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara, CA. We were thrilled to have Michael’s beloved tigers, Thriller and Sabu, join our pride here at Shambala when Michael needed a good home for them. Thriller and Sabu will always remind us of Michael.”

Shambala’s website offers pictures of the big cat friends to Thriller and Sabu, and offers a virtual tour of the preserve.

Michael Jackson: Confused About, But Friend Towards Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, June 26th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Male Singers.

435_bubbles

Following his death from cardiac arrest yesterday at age 50, Michael Jackson’s life is being remembered in every detail, including his life with animals.

Jackson had been criticized for his treatment of animals on more than one occasion.

He rescued his famous chimpanzee companion, Bubbles, from a cancer research clinic. Eventually Bubbles had to be given to an animal trainer because it became aggressive as it grew older.

His Neverland Ranch was known for housing exotic animals like elephants, giraffes, and orangutans, that were neglected during his legal battles in the 90s and then sold to pay off debts.

But anyone who followed Michael knew he was a friend to animals. In 1996, he won the Doris Day Music Award at the Genesis Awards for his song, “Earth Song,” which recognizes celebrity pro animal messages.

Some of the lyrics to “Earth Song,” included, “What about animals, We’ve turned kingdoms to dust, What about elephants, Have we lost their trust?”

Like many, Michael was probably just unaware of the both the realities of raising wild animals as pets or the time and effort required to give them appropriate care and attention.

As Doris Lin on her animal rights blog said, “I’m sure Jackson would have said that he loved Bubbles and all of his zoo animals.”

Vegan Scott Jurek Aiming For 8th Western States Endurance Win

Vegan marathoner Scott Jurek is gearing up to compete in the Western States Endurance Run from June 27-28.

Jurek won seven consecutive titles from 1999-2005, then went on hiatus because he was looking for a different challenge.

As if the Western States Endurance Run wasn’t challenging enough. According to the organization’s website:

“The Run is conducted along the Western States Trail starting at Squaw Valley, California, and ending in Auburn, California, a total of 100 miles. The trail ascends from the Squaw Valley floor (elevation 6,200 feet) to Emigrant Pass (elevation 8,750 feet), a climb of 2,550 vertical feet in the first 4½ miles. From the pass, following the original trails used by the gold and silver miners of the 1850’s, runners travel west, climbing another 15,540 feet and descending 22,970 feet before reaching Auburn.”

“Most of the trail passes through remote and rugged territory, accessible only to hikers, horses and helicopters.”

No problem for a guy who fills up on the beans and tofu, right?

Although Scott grew up in a fishing, hunting, and meat eating world, he later went vegan, and now the 6 ‘2″, 170 pound athlete lives a world of beans, legumes, lentils, and soy.

Wishing Scott the best of luck. Show ’em how vegans do it, man.

Taking a little break from regular celebrity gossip to bring you fantastic news.

Bank of America Credit Cards has teamed up with the Humane Society of the United States to offer a unique HSUS credit card!

Not only can you carry cute kitty in your wallet, but every time you whip out this Platinum Plus no annual fee Visa, Bank of America will donate $.25 to every $100 dollars you spend.

Credit cards may have a bad reputation for high interest rates, fees, and rapidly changing policies, but let’s face it-we all need them from time to time.

Why not help an animal in need the next time you choose monetary “plastic” instead of paper (cash).

Punchline magazine has shared a few to warm up your funny bone, which include some hilarious vegetarian themed thoughts.

Like a Tweet made to Paula Poundstone, suggesting dominating, Type A personality chickens ran the food research labs:

@paulapoundstone My daughter is eating vegetarian chicken nuggets. I’ll bet chickens gathered outside the lab that developed that food. “How’s it coming?”

Or one Tweet to Michael Showalter, which suggests spinach doing questionable activities:

@mshowalter Waitress just said their creamed spinach was “banging.” Now sure how I feel about that.

Gwyneth Paltrow Makes Veggie B.L.T. Fancy With Avocado

LA Premiere Of Valentino: The Last Emperor

The current recipe entry in Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop newsletter features a vegan B.L.T., or BLAT (Bacon Lettuce Avocado and Tomato) complete with her favorite mayonnaise substitute, Vegenaise.

Gwyneth says it best in the introduction to the recipe:

“This MAKE is for my no-dairy, no-meat, no-white flour (if you omit the croutons) loving friends who are looking for a quick, casual summer lunch. Proof that vegan food rocks!”

Yes, girlfriend, this sandwich does rock, and there’s a beautiful food porn picture of the stacked vegan goodness at Goop.com.

Gwyneth compliments that BLAT entry with un-Caesar salad-Caesar salad minus egg yolks and anchovies-and homemade rosemary and thyme croutons.

It’s all washed down with agave sweetened lemonade.

The best thing about veggie bacon is that it’s missing all the fatty sections that regular bacon has in it, so you get more “meat” in your bite. A good brand to check out is Lightlife Smart Bacon.

Michael Jackson Dies Of Cardiac Arrest At 50

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, June 26th, 2009 in Male Singers.

Michael Jackson Dies In Los Angeles At Age 50

When Elvis Presley passed, they said the King was dead.

Now sadly, the King of Pop has passed as well.

Michael Jackson has died of an apparent cardiac arrest, according to TMZ.com.

“Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him. We’re told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back. A source tells us Jackson was dead when paramedics arrived. Once at the hospital, the staff tried to resuscitate him but he was completely unresponsive.”

All of us are wondering, what happened?

The man was only 50 years young and had just been examined by doctors before starting his This Is It tour.

His promotion company, AEG, was even considering insuring him themselves, saying “The insurance brokers sent doctors and they spend five hours with him, taking blood tests. He’s a vegetarian, he’s in great shape.”

Words cannot express the lost the world has experienced, but some celebrities have Tweeted their thoughts, like Shanna Moakler:

“The hard thing about getting older is watching all those who inspired you pass, love to the jackson family…”

She couldn’t have summed it up better.

Our thoughts go out to family, friends, and fans. May he rest in peace.
