John Mackey–Whole Foods Meat And Animal Welfare

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey Challenges The FTC Over Wild Oats Merger

As a vegetarian, can you ever agree that some meat is ethical?

John Mackey made the decision to go vegetarian after discovering how some animals farmed for meat were treated.

“I became more conscious of what we were doing to livestock animals and how much those animals were being abused,” he said during a video interview posted on the Whole Foods blog.  “The summer of 2003, I read a dozen books or so on the way animals were being treated and I decided in good conscious I didn’t want to eat animals anymore.”

But Whole Foods still sells meat. Does this make Mackey a hypocrite?

“I find the death argument to not be a particularly good one because everything that’s alive dies. At the end of the day it’s the quality of life that you have prior from birth to death that really matters. Not whether you die in the end. Animals are going to die in the end and what matters to them whether the life they have from birth to death is a life that allows them to fulfill their animal potential.”

Mackey says the company has been developing an Animal Welfare 5 Step rating program, which will rate producers based on how they treat their livestock. Ideally, the producers with the highest rating will be the only ones to sell their product at Whole Foods.

Certainly a life full of free movement and fresh air beats being crammed in cages and being forced to reproduce or produce products like milk unnaturally.

Do you agree with Mackey?

Or should Whole Foods aim to stop selling meat entirely?

Bar Refaeli, Leonardo DiCaprio Shop At Whole Foods

2009 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter - Arrivals

Update 2/28/09: We are so sad to learn that Bar is NOT a vegetarian. Although a few sources said she was, as of now, we learn she admits to eating a cheeseburger and fries once a week. Boo!

The rumored vegetarian model and girlfriend of Leonardo DiCaprio, Bar Refaeli, was spotted shopping with her man Leo at Whole Foods.

The two packed the groceries on the back of Leo’s motorcycle.

If case you’ve forgotten (but don’t see how you could have), Bar is the latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit hottie.

Many of our favorite veg celebs have been spotted at Whole Foods (possibly picking up organic vegetables from China), including Milo Ventimiglia, Stella McCartney, and Anne Hathaway.

Erykah Badu joked it was so expensive to shop there, you had to have a record deal to do so. With the amount of money Bar rakes in from showing off her bod, it’s safe to assume recording artists and models can afford to shop there.

You can view pic of Bar and Leo with their groceries at Popsugar.

Stella McCartney Cares: Shops At Whole Foods, Aims For Organic

Stella McCartney Store - Christmas Lights Switched On

We all know organic is better for us, especially when it comes to some fruits and vegetables, but sometimes it’s hard to do the org thing because of access or financial issues. Not to worry, even the stars who pledge to be healthy have to compromise every now and then.

“Sometimes it’s just not practical, but I do what I can. I shop at Whole Foods in the U.K.,” said Stella McCartney.

Stella has her own line of organic skin care products, CARE, which are 100% totally organic.

She’s featured on Sprig.com’s 10 Organic Diet Secret of the Stars slide show, along with militant organic momma Madonna.

Avril Lavigne No Kitty Cat, Not Into Wheatgrass Shots

Avril Lavigne with her husband at Madeos

So there was a rumor going around that Avril Lavigne craves wheatgrass shots.

While this isn’t true, she does try to get her vegetables in through steaming broccoli and eating other vegetables with vegan sour cream and vegan butter before shows to keep her energy level up.

After a show though, it’s all downhill. According to People, she said, “I’ll eat junk and have a glass of wine. I like French fries and ice cream cones – and [I like] the truck-stop burritos.”

She’s also a sucker for dill pickle-flavored chips her home country of Canada. Good thing too, as it’s probably easier to take these with her on the road as opposed to the pizzas named after her in her hometown.

Nice to know Avril knows how to be both naughty and nice.

While we love Avril eating healthy, and wheatgrass shots are supposedly good and all, somehow it makes you think of the plant you bring home from Whole Foods to give to the cat.

Obama’s Got Beef With Beets, Overpriced Arugula

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, November 14th, 2008 in Food & Drink, Politicians.

Barack Obama Campaigns Throughout Oregon Ahead Of State's Primary

George W. Bush’s father, the first presidential Bush, hated broccoli. Barack Obama dislikes the tastes of beets. It appears the right and the left aren’t too different when it comes to having vegetable pet peeves.

Obama hates beets and makes it a policy to “always avoid eating them.”

Earlier on the campaign trail he shared a similar view with Erykah Badu, mentioning that Whole Foods was an expensive place to buy produce, arugula in particular.

Although good for you, there’s no doubt some vegetables taste so bad you don’t want to touch them with a 10 foot carrot pole. Which vegetables would you make it a policy to abolish from the White House if you were office?

What’s Milo Ventimiglia Cooking Tonight?

Grand Re-Opening Of The Burberry Beverly Hills Store

Milo stalkers, uh, we mean, paparazzi caught Milo Ventimiglia shopping at Whole Foods grocery store, the place where you have to have either a record deal or television contract to afford.

There’s a picture of Milo walking with three bags from Whole Foods (but no Hayden Panettiere was helping). Milo has been quoted as saying, “I’m a homebody, I’d rather be in the kitchen cooking than hanging out in a bar.”

So refreshing to see a Hollywood star living up to his word.

Obviously, there’s ingredients for something veggie in there. And we bet he’s pretty good at whipping meatless stuff up, given the fact that he’s been eating vegetarian since day 0 in utero and all.

Here’s the question, though: What do you think Milo cooked that night? Does anyone know his favorite dish? Any ideas as to what he made?

Anne Hathaway’s Shower At Whole Foods

BFI 52 London Film Festival: 'Rachel Getting Married' - Red Carpet

The Karen & Sisters food loving actress Anne Hathaway was spotted grocery shopping at Whole Foods in Hollywood a few days ago. If you remember us telling you, Anne told David Letterman she had gone back to being vegetarian, was almost vegan, and had given up smoking as well.

Apparently, she was examining the produce when the timed sprinkler went off and gave her a little “shower.”

We guess this Whole Foods doesn’t have a recording device that says, “Please stand back. Freshwater misting is about to occur.”

It may be for the best. The voice-over can be more startling than a little mist.

Emily Deschanel Likes Gardein From Whole Foods

2008 FOX UpFront - Arrivals

More food voyeurism. What do the vegetarian stars like to eat? We found what’s probably on the grocery lists of Chrissie Hynde, Constance Marie, Dennis Kucinich, Daryl Hannah, and Emily Deschanel every week.

In addition to vegetarian pot roast, our favorite Bones actress likes Gardein, a wheat protein product that she says you can only find at Whole Foods. “It’s very tasty,” she said.

Constance Marie is really into veggie hot dogs, Daryl Hannah tries to stay away from fake meats because of soy isolate, but Dennis Kucinich loves his Tofurky`kielbasa’ and the vegan Gardenburger.

Singer Chrissie Hynde is probably the least picky to please: “I will eat whatever I am offered, providing no animals have suffered.”
