Kari Byron Doesn’t Bust Myth About Meat Cravings And Pregnancy

Mythbuster #1: You don’t have to eat real meat during pregnancy if you get weird cravings.

Kari Byron, co-host of the Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters, uncovers the truth about urban legends and news stories in pop culture.

So we’re wondering why she didn’t test out the myth that otherwise vegetarian women who get meaty cravings during pregnancy can’t get their needs fulfilled through imitation meats.

Byron gave into some mean cravings for beef stew while pregnant even though she was a strict vegetarian before.

“My husband had to cut the meat up — that part was too gross for me! — and he prepared it,” she said.

Byron thinks her baby wanted the full experience of hardcore, hormone pumped beef versus wimpy, recreational drug meat like chicken.

“I guess the little baby wanted to taste beef! Not even a gateway meat like chicken!”

Maybe next time Byron will investigate this urban legend and see if imitation beef does the trick.

Barbara Walters Taking Own Veggie Burgers To The White House

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 8th, 2009 in Food & Drink, TV Hosts.

Times 100 Most Influential People In The WorldBarbara Walters may soon be added to the list of favorite vegetarian TV hosts.

Green gossip website Ecorazzi.com received a tip from a fan who stated Walters announced she was seriously thinking about going vegetarian. Walters was prompted by a story about a cow named Molly who escaped a New York slaughterhouse.

“This morning on the View Barbara Walters brought up the topic of the Cow Molly that had escaped a slaughterhouse in NY yesterday. She said that was the reason she is more and more leaning towards vegetarianism. She also stated that she is scheduled to go to a White House dinner and she plans on bringing her own veggie burgers.”

Way to go, Barb! We seriously hope she follows through with this decision and sticks with it.

On an even happier note, the escaped cow was not sent back to slaughter, but instead transferred to an animal sanctuary in Suffolk county.

Maybe Barbara will pay her inspiration a visit and share some greens for lunch one day!

Bob Barker Says Vegetarianism Kept The Price Right For Years

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 15th, 2009 in TV Hosts, Videos.

Bob Barker Returns To The Price Is Right

Bob Barker invited TheInsider.com in his old dressing room on The Price Is Right when he returned to the show to promote his new book, Priceless Memories.

Bob and Drew Carey, the new host for The Price Is Right, started talking about diet and Drew wanted some veg tips to help him stick around longer.

“I did the show until I was 83. I don’t believe I could have done that had I not been a vegetarian,” Bob said.

“I became a vegetarian out of concern for animals. But very soon after I became a vegetarian, I could see why people do it out of concern for health because I had more energy and I felt better.”

Wanna know the best kiss Drew Carey ever got? It was from Bob, of course, after Drew told him he’d continue to advocate spaying and neutering pets on the show like Bob did.

You can view the video at The Insider to hear Bob talk veggie and his passion for animals.

Radio One DJ Fearne Cotton Talks Anorexia, Vegetarian Diet

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 9th, 2009 in Radio Hosts, TV Hosts.

Fearne Cotton promoting the BAFTA awards

Radio One DJ Fearne Cotton recently featured a documentary about websites encouraging girls and women to starve themselves.

According to the UK Sun, during the documentary, The Truth About Online Anorexia, Fearne met a woman whose daughter had died of the disease as well as an anorexic woman who runs a “pro-ana” website which encourages girls with eating disorders by printing diet tips and pictures of bone-thin models.

Fearne thinks many celebrities who blab about their latest diet should keep quiet because of the negative impact they could have on young girls.

“I think that is irresponsible. If you are doing a diet and you are a role model, don’t go splashing it about, because kids might just take hold of it and start doing it too.”

“When I was a kid I would always look up to people like Zoe Ball and Denise Van Outen and, whether they liked it or not, I would be influenced by what they said. So, as someone who is on TV now, I feel I have to take some kind of stance as a role model. I would hate to put out any kind of unhealthy advice.”

Fearne has no problem sharing the secret to maintaining her figure by following a vegetarian diet and lots of exercise. And giving chocolate the thumbs up, too.

“I eat a healthy diet but my social life revolves around eating out and I love baking more than anything in the world, and eating chocolate.”

Bob Barker Book, Priceless Memories, Helps Spay, Neuter Pets

Bob Barker Returns To The Price Is Right

Bob Barker returned to the set of The Price Is Right recently to promote his new book, Priceless Memories, due out April 6th.

Proceeds from the book sales will go towards DJ&T Foundation, which he founded in 1994 to help foot the bill of spaying and neutering animals.

The longtime vegetarian is the owner of many animals himself, including two rabbits named “Mr. Rabbit,” and “Honey Bunny,” and always ended each Price Is Right show with his signature sign-off, “Help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered.”

Barker proved he was both a host and a comedian as two prize showcases were, cough, cough, “heavily themed” with his book.

For example, one showcase featured a computer where you could order the book, trip to New York City to buy a bundle of the books from the publisher, and a truck to haul them all back in.

Hilarious!

Priceless Memories contains Bob’s experiences as a host on several shows including The Price is Right, Truth or Consequences, Miss USA, and Miss Universe.

Favorite contestants, celebrity encounters, as well as his personal life being raised through the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl are given pages.

Some sections also discuss his passion for animal rights and include real life examples of his work, such as having an anti-fur stance for the beauty pagents he hosted.

Britain’s Got Talent Amanda Holden: Low Fat Food Has No Talent!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink, TV Hosts.

Childrens Champions 2009

Who said vegetarians eat lettuce, sprouts, and plain tofu all day?

British actress Amanda Holden became famous for her role as Sarah Trevanion on “Wild at Heart” and is a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.

“I’m vegetarian, but I love my food,” she told the UK Times Online.

“I don’t believe in having low-fat spread in the fridge, and I do indulge in a pudding, and I do like a bit of Stilton when I’m having posh dinners out.”

Her guilty pleasures include “butter” and “wine” but we’re not sure if she necessarily puts those together.

Luckily, she is a natural outdoors gal who would rather jog with her dog than stay cooped up in an artificial gym setting. This exercise routine seems to be working for her, as she ran the London Marathon last year.
