Paul McCartney Signs Petition To Ban Trading Of Seal Goods

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, April 25th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Natural Resources Defense Council 11th Annual Forces For Nature Benefit
Paul McCartney is the latest celebrity to add his name the growing list on the petition urging members of European Parliament to make the trading of goods made from seals illegal.

“The fate of millions of seal pups is in the hands of elected members of the European Parliament,” McCartney said in a statement.

“In the next few weeks they will have a historic opportunity to stop the cruel trade in seal products throughout the European Union.”

Voting on the complete ban takes place next week. Such a ban would deter hunters from clubbing seals, wishing to gain profits from their coats and meat.

Social Distortion Frontman Mike Ness Records Vegetarian PSA

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 in Male Musicians, Male Singers, Videos.

Stagecoach California's Country Music Festival 2008 - Day 1
Mike Ness has recorded his PSA for vegetarianism with PETA.

Mike is the front man for the rock band Social Distortion and is making a name for himself in the alterna-country scene.

“The more I got educated about cruelty and inhumane treatment… It was really a no-brainer. No one would barbecue their family dog. How is a cow or a pig different or a chicken different? They’re just as much of a gentle animal as a dog or a cat.”

“I just feel stronger, faster, cleaner, healthier.”

You can watch Mike’s PSA at peta.org.

Missy Higgins Fronts New PETA Anti-Fur Ad With Best Friend Izzy

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 17th, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Fur.

We admit we’re in love with Missy Higgins. But what’s not to love about her?

A vegan with a beautiful voice and equally talented song writing skills, she’s no stranger to animal issues either. Remember when she got cuddly with the piggy?

Now she’s cozying up with Izzy the dog, and both want to convey a serious message about animals and the fur industry.

“If you wouldn’t wear your dog, please don’t wear any fur,” reads the ad.

“The only difference between your “best friend” and animals killed for their fur is how we treat them. All animals suffer and feel pain. Please don’t wear any fur or fur trim.”

Vegetarian Times hosted their 2009 Dining Out Awards and nearly 700 readers voted for restaurants based in different regions of the U.S and several specialty veg restaurants like Most Eco-Fabulous and Totally RAWsome.

Chrissie Hynde’s Vegiterranean won “Most Promising Rookie.”

Several other restaurants made the cut, including The Chicago Diner for the midwest. If you recall, the diner is where Ellen DeGeneres went gaga over the vegan seitan hot wings and had some Fed Ex’d to her studios in California.

Peter Max’s fave, Candle 79, won the category for the northeast.

To find out what veg restaurants in your part of the country you should be visiting, pick up a copy of the April issue of Vegetarian Times.

Missy Higgins’ fans know who she is!

During a recent conversation on the missyhiggins.org forum, one fan wanted to know where Missy got her wickedly delicious guitar strap shown here.

Much talk went on about the origins of the strap, including the theory it came from a vintage porn shop. Don’t ask us how they arrived at that one. We won’t go there.

One fan offers some insight into the materials in the strap:

“Based on what the strap looks like, I think your best bet is some sort of cotton/nylon strap with what normally would be leather or suede ends, but the vegan in her probably opposes any cow hide for the strap.”

Woohoo! Missy has taught her fans well, as they’re well schooled on her principles when it comes to animal products.

KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas - Day 1

We’re really, really bad about birthdays. Ditto for anniversaries.

So while we’re a little late welcoming AFI and their bassist Hunter Burgan to our family of Twitter followers, it’s better late than never.

And we didn’t have to offer him a vegan burrito to join us.

Hunter is the Vegan Ambassador for Macbeth Vegan shoes, which he has said includes duties of, “creating new and better vegan foreign policy.” Last we checked, he was off to convince the Turkish ambassador to Chile to make chili with tofu instead of turkey.

Hunter tweets a lot. So much he won a Shorty Award, which goes to high achievers who can express themselves in 140 characters of less.

So pay him a visit on his blog at  Tranquilmammoth.com or follow his tweets @Tranquilmammoth.

Hunter Burgan Will Be Your Friend If You Offer Him A Burrito

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 6th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Videos.

Hunter Burgan, AFI bassist and Vegan Ambassador for MacBeth vegan shoes has posted Part 4 of a 7 part Q & A series where he answers questions submitted by readers of his blog, Tranquilmammoth.com.

One reader asked this hilarious and bizarre question:

Let’s say that I happen to own this awesome burrito factory where I serve vegan burritos only-every vegan burrito you can imagine. I also serve coffee there. Would you be my friend on those terms, even though you know absolutely nothing about me?

Hunter’s reply:
“Yeah, I would be a little bit suspicious. This seems like a trap. And I’m not going to just walk right into a trap…Vegan burritos, right?”

Hunter’s sissy played a big part in his decision to go veg. She had been vegetarian for six years before Hunter became one.

Watch the video to learn what costume Hunter would wear to do spy work.
