Show At UK Music Hall Of Fame 2005

When we heard Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders were doing a show at the Minnesota Zoo, we did a double take.

The zoo is the last place a staunch animal rights supporter like Chrissie would hang out at, right?

Turns out, she did write a letter after learning animals in the family petting zoo area are eventually sent off to the slaughterhouse.

“How can a zoo invite children to touch and play with and express joy over animals for their uniqueness, only to turn around and sell those very animals to slaughter?” she wrote.

The Pretenders show at the zoo has been rescheduled, but another venue has yet to be chosen.

Sue McLean, the concert’s promoter, cited several factors for the change in venue, including size of the crowd and the zoo’s curfew at 10:30 PM.

The latest tour is to promote The Pretenders’ album, Break Up The Concrete.

Jason Mraz likes it raw. And ever since he opened up about his chocolate avocado dessert, he’s never stopped talking to the media about his raw vegan diet.

So it comes as no surprise that Jason’s named his latest tour after a chain of raw foods restaurants in San Fransisco, California, Cafe Gratitude.

Cafe Gratitude, the tour, kicks off in July in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Cafe Gratitude, the menu, offers elixirs, juices, and smoothies, appetizers like raw nachos, and raw soups, salads, pizzas, and veggie burgers.

20th Annual Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - Show

Okay, so it’s no secret The Pretenders’ singer is a vegan and animal rights activist, but the Independent’s article “My Secret Life” reveals a few facts you may not know about Chrissie Hynde.

Chrissie’s secrets include life changing vegetarian moments and a love for greener, public transportation.

The moment that changed me for ever … was becoming a vegetarian aged 17; my whole life changed. I spent a lot of time hanging out in the woods near my house and felt a connection to the birds and trees.

My real-life villain is … McDonald’s.

I drive … a Smart car but don’t use it much. My favourite ride is the bus; I like to get involved in the human pageantry.

Chrissie Hynde Hates Zoos, Loves Performing At Them?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Female Musicians, Female Singers.

Chrissie Hynde Unveils New PETA Advert

Chrissie Hynde is always outspoken on animal rights issues and is a stickler about practicing what she preaches. The woman even bans meat during her performances, requesting seitan “wheat meat” sandwiches be served at her concerts.

So it comes as a surprise that after speaking out against zoos, she’ll be playing at one for her summer tour promoting her latest album, Break Up The Concrete.

The Oversneer at Deceiver.com  explains.

Chrissie Hynde is scheduled to perform at the Minnesota Zoo in August. But during an interview with Australian activist group Animal Liberation, she expressed interest in animals being free.

June: “I despise zoos and circuses with animals. What about you Chrissie?”
Chrissie: “The animals have got to be free.”

Chrissie is not a typical two-faced celebrity, so hearing this news is rather strange. Could it be the result of the forceful hand of a management company dictating an artist’s schedule.

Maybe Chrissie wants to use the opportunity to denounce zoos once she’s on stage.

Nellie McKay is basking in the glory of being a mom these days. Best of all, she didn’t go through hours of labor to take the credit. She simply went to her local shelter and adopted a pit bull named Bess, who she was walking during our exclusive interview with her.

On her new bundle of joy
Her name is Bess. I’m on an email list that lets you know when animals are about to be put down at the local shelter. I never took in an animal because I travel so much. It didn’t seem fair to them and it seemed kind of impossible for me. But I just couldn’t say no to her. They had pictures of her still lactating. She had just given birth. They [former owners] had taken her puppies and dumped her. She was a throw away mom.

At first she pretended like she didn’t know how to sit. It turns out she just needed the incentive of a treat. She was pretending and she knew all along. She’s the greatest thing that ever happened. She’s the light of my life. She makes life worth living.

On the Obamas not choosing a shelter dog
I think he definitely made the wrong decision. The pressure should be on them for the next animal they get. All this pure-breed stuff…We should all be going after mutts. There are hypoallergenic mutts as well as breeds. We have to get rid of the whole breed mentality. It’s animal racism. Just don’t go for it.

It isn’t hard. The hypoallergenic dogs are available as we speak. The Humane Society and other animal rescue groups offered to help with that search. And the argument that it’s a personal decision-well, so is meat eating but it hurts others.

This seems like something that could have helped so many animals. It could have drawn attention to the plight of so many animals in shelters. They are so influential. It could have saved so many lives and made so many lives better for animals that are just languishing there waiting to be seen, let alone be adopted. I’m disappointed and I just hope that their second dog or cat they will get from a shelter.

Chrissie Hynde Joins PETA Protest Of KFC

Let’s face it, animal rights activists have to have thick skin.

When your motives are questioned, your tactics are ridiculed, and the cops are just waiting to shackle you at the slightest feeling the peaceful protest is turning ugly, it takes a lot of balls to get up routinely and stand up for creatures who cannot.

Not to mention those insane outfits!

From priests to fake bloody meat to animals to even getting downright naked, animal rights activists show no shame in dressing for the occasion to get the point across. Not a problem at all for vegan singer Chrissie Hynde.

“I don’t mind standing next to a guy dressed as a carrot chanting, ‘We’re not leaving ’til the cows come home,” Hynde told the Sunday Mail.

Or, standing next to a KFC chicken.

“If you’re willing to make a bit of a fool of yourself to make your point – that’s what you have to do.”

Whether it’s protesting KFC, McDonald’s or the mulesing industry, Chrissie has proven she never fails to pay her dues to the fools’ club.

Moby Ponders If Zombies Eat Vegans

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 22nd, 2009 in Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Tribeca Film Festival Chanel Dinner celebrity arrivals in NYCMoby was on his way to the dentist recently when he started a much intellectual discussion with himself about whether zombies would find vegans tasty.

Please note that he hadn’t been to the dentist yet, so there was no Novocaine or other mind altering painkiller involved.

“see, i know the zombies won’t want to eat the vegans, as vegans tend to be all skinny and stringy and we’re generally kind of speedy. they’re going to make a b-line for vegas and eat the people standing in the buffet line. cull the herd, zombies.”

Why the concern about zombies, you ask? After experiencing his first earthquake a few days ago, Moby also experienced his first zombie escape. You can view a pic of the zombie escaping the trunk of a car on his journal.

Of course, Moby never thought to ask if zombies themselves were vegan. That fugitive zombie could just have a mean craving for sweet and sour tofu.
