Nigella Lawson Would Love A Dog Or A Cat…Just Kidding Guys

Saatchi Gallery - Launch Party

It has been suggested that celebrity chef Nigella Lawson stick to cooking and leave the humor to someone else.

On BBC1 radio’s The One Show, she made a comment that angered many animal rights activist, saying that going into a store and buying a fur coat is a “moment of weakness,” but “if I could go out into the woods and kill a bear myself, I would then wear it proudly as a trophy.”

Is this Sarah Palin of the UK?

The interviewer, Andrian Chiles asked her, “For celebrities who do wear fur, if they started skinning little dogs and strapping those on their backs, would they feel any differently?” Lawson then replied, “I’d love a dog or a cat.”

Her spokesperson later explained that the comment was meant to be a joke, but oh, how others don’t share the same sense of humor.

Viva! deputy director, Justin Kerswell:

“Nigella should stick to making double entendres about puddings. Most fur comes from animals farmed in appalling conditions. Much of it from China where there are no animal welfare laws and horrific cruelty is an everyday occurrence.”

A spokesman for Respect for Animals, an organization which campaigns against the fur trade:

“Her comments were callous and lacked any human decency. It was an astonishing thing to say on live television. If she could see the way in which bears and other animals are killed in the wild, she wouldn’t have been so flippant.”

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals:

“Nigella’s comments were ill-judged and show her in an unattractive light.”

We are starting to get the point.

Finally,  her spokesperson cleared things up:

”She was pointing out that, if you are a meat eater, you need to know where your food is from and the same goes for what people wear.”

Katherine Jenkins Is No Leona Lewis

Katherine Jenkins Launches Harrods Winter Sale

Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins upset quite a few anti-fur protesters recently when she agreed to perform at the opening of a Harrods sale.

Yes, Harrods, the same department store Leona Lewis refused to sing at because the store sells fur and Leona is a staunch vegetarian.

But wait, so is Katherine Jenkins.

“I was very excited to join the sales,” Jenkins said. “I am a girl’s girl, so obviously this is my idea of fun. Personally, I do not eat meat or wear fur, but people are entitled to their opinions.”

Or perhaps she was very excited to join the sales money. Lewis’ offer to open a previous Harrods sale was worth over a million dollars. It’s not known what Jenkins was payed for her performance.

Anti-Fur Protestors Gather As Harrods Winter Sale Begins

Jenkins was also quoted as saying she vowed not to let the animal rights protesters “dampen everyone’s fun,” which most certainly didn’t win her any more points with the anti-fur group.

“If people choose to buy fur items that is their prerogative. She was simply opening a sale at a store that sells fur items,” a spokesperson for Jenkins said.

According to John Wilson, member of the Coalition to Abolish Fur Trade, Harrods is the only major department store in the UK to sell imported fur, much of which comes from China where animals are housed in deplorable conditions and rabbits are often skinned alive.

Donna Karan Waves Bye To Bunnies: Hopefully, Her Nose Won’t Grow

Donna Karan Hosts The Kageno Harambee Gala

Although you still have to hit her with snowballs to earn points in the Holiday Snowball Game, Donna Karan has made the announcement that she will not be using fur in her fall 2009 winter or any future collections, according to PETA’s blog.

Congrats to Donna and animal lovers worldwide for a decision to advance the fashion industry. But will this new relationship between Karan and Peter cottontail last?

Pinocchio Giorgio Armani once promised to stop using fur in his collections, but only a little after a year, he reneged, prompting PETA to design an ad of him with a Pinocchio’s nose.

Tim Gunn, personality on “Project Runway”, sent both Donna and Armani a copy of the video he recorded exposing the ugly side of fur farms, with rabbits being skinned alive for their pelts. He’s not alone in the sea of fashionistas who are going against the fur grain, including Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein.

We hope Donna remains in the pack with the more ethical designers. Besides, she’s far too attractive a lady to pin a wooden nose on her for satire, don’t you think?

Project Runway’s Tim Gunn: Maybe Not Human Hair, Definitely Not Fur

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 26th, 2008 in Fashion, Fur, TV Hosts.

67th Annual George Foster Peabody Awards

On Bravo TV’s Project Runway, designers are not permitted to use fur in any of their collections. A contestant from Season 4 circumvented this by using human hair. Not exactly what fashion consultant Tim Gunn was advocating, but at least the human survives the ordeal of having its fur removed.

With so many cruelty-free clothing lines out there, it’s becoming easier to make responsible decisions regarding the wardrobe.

It’s also easier to forget there’s still work to be done in the mainstream fashion industry, where fur, leather, and other animal products are used regularly. It isn’t enough to shun these designers by not purchasing their products. The ultimate goal is to convince the entire fashion industry to eliminate these materials altogether.

And that’s where Tim Gunn steps in. A mainstream television personality with a show that’s religiously followed by fashionistas everywhere, he’s recently teamed up with PETA to record a video urging designers who currently use fur to stop.

“Any designer in the fashion industry who does not want to watch the PETA video and see exactly what happens to animals and how they’re treated and how the product that they use comes to the marketplace I believe is egregiously irresponsible,” Gunn said. “It is critically important that we all be educated about these matters and then make choices.”

You can view Tim Gunn’s video, as well as watch a Q & A session with him over at PETA’s blog.

Good Job Momma Hilton! Faux Fur Is The Best This Christmas

Paris Hilton - Fragrance Signing And Photocall

Socialite Kathy Hilton, mother of Paris Hilton, spoke with E! Online about what her two grown little girls are getting for Christmas. Yes, it looks like E!Online has now ruined the surprise for Paris and Nicky!

Just one of their surprises, that it, as it’s a sure thing Momma Hilton got them more than one item. Especially considering she started shopping in October.

“Nicky wanted me to get her this photograph,” Kathy said. “It is of a beautiful swan because she loves swans, so I got her that.”

“And Paris, I am going to get her a very cool faux fur coat. Like a bomber jacket.”

Kudos to that! A socialite worth millions, billions, and gazillions, dropped the word that she’s buying fake fur for the holidays. In a time where celebrities are still pretending it’s caveman days and fur is the only way to keep warm, Momma Hilton proudly professed what her pocketbook is financing this year, one of the best cruelty-free presents you can buy.

Awhile back, Kathy’s husband Rick, was gushing over Paris’s then boyfriend Benji Madden and his clean lifestyle, saying he was a “healthy vegan.”

Paris and Benji broke up, but still hang out together. Is a romantic reunion possible? If so, we’re jumping for joy. With Benji’s healthy vegan lifestyle and momma Hilton choosing faux fur, some of that animal compassion just might rub off on Paris.

Eva Mendes Wants Threesome With Jennifer Aniston, Morrissey

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, December 21st, 2008 in Actresses.

The 10th Anniversary Party For Flaunt Magazine

Eva Mendes has gone wild.

Earlier we told you she wanted to pose naked with Morrissey for a People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) anti-fur ad.

Now she wants Jennifer Aniston to join them.

She joked she had a craving for a “PETA-Buddy and Jenny Sandwich,” when expressing her desire to get Aniston involved. Is that what they’re calling it these days?

Mendes, like many others, particularly men, was impressed with Aniston’s naked photo cover for GQ magazine. That, along with the fact that Aniston’s new movie, Marley & Me, is about a dog who helps a couple cope with life, is the reason Eva thinks Jen is picture perfect for the job.

“Jennifer is currently going naked to promote a film about what wonderful companions and teachers dogs are,” Mendes said. “And it is just one small step from there to advocating for the fair and ethical treatment of all animals.”

Three is a crowd, but if it’s for the sake of animal rights, close might still be comfy.

And you thought it didn’t get any better than a Wii Fit.

The people at PETA have invented entertainment for all the gamers in mind. The online game, PETA’s Holiday Snowball Game, allows you to throw snowballs at fur wearing celebrities, such as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who are presented as their satirical counterparts-The Trollsen Twins (Hairy-Kate and Trashley Olsen), Madonna, and fashion designer Donna Karan.

You get 10 points for ambushing Madonna, 25 for Donna Karan, and a whopping 50 for taking out Mary-Kate and Ashley with any part of Frosty you’d like. And if you advance to the next levels, take shots at Colonel Sanders and Sarah Palin.

Warning: There are innocent non fur wearing civilians you shouldn’t hit, and if you do, you lose 50 points. They don’t have names, but you could call them “The Pleather People.”

Even better than the family football bowl during the holidays. Let the games begin.

Khloe Kardashian Shows Throwing Red Paint On People Works

Khloe Kardashian Unveils Her PETA

Since Khloe Kardashian showed off her voluptuous figure in defense of the animals, she’s taken some heat from some in the media posting old pictures of her in her fur wearing days. Quick to respond, she wrote on her blog:

“As some of you might have seen today, there are several people who have taken to the web calling me a hypocrite and posting photos of me wearing fur.”

“The reason PETA approached me initially is because in my past I did wear fur and they wanted to educate me on the brutal ways in which animals are skinned for their pelts. After watching their video once, I was so horrified that I immediately swore off fur…”

“I have changed my ways and I hope that many other people will as well.”

Score one for PETA, zero for Kid Rock, who thinks all PETA does is throw paint on “little Hollywood actresses that can’t defend themselves.” We’re pretty sure Khloe got a nice letter from PETA, rather than paint on her coat, though.
