Michelle Obama Garden Inspires African Americans

Michelle Obama and local students harvest the White House kitchen garden in Washington

Could Michelle Obama‘s desire to return to healthy eating and eat local inspire African Americans to do the same?

According to Dr. Shemuel Israel, President of the North Lawndale Greening Committee on Chicago’s West Side, the answer is yes.

Dr. Israel thinks the First Family’s garden is partially responsible for the increased interest and hopes the trend continues.

“We do a lot, but there’s more work to be done to teach people to grow their own food,” he said, according to Chicago Now.

With Mrs. Obama’s influence and African Americans like John Salley and Forest Whitaker encouraging African Americans to improve their diets by eating vegetarian, Dr. Israel might see the fruits of his labor sooner than later.

Forest Whitaker Receives Nigerian Chieftaincy Over Vegetarian Feast

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 16th, 2009 in Actors, Food & Drink.

35th Annual NAACP Image Awards - Arrivals

Who says traveling abroad makes for difficulty in keeping your diet veg? Forest Whitaker traveled to Africa, ate vegetarian, and got crowned a chief in the process. Talk about a lucky dog!

He and actor Danny Glover recently traveled to Nigeria where they both received chieftaincy titles.

Whitaker was able to receive his title, Nwannedinamba of Nkwere in Imo State, which means “a brother in foreign land,” after using DNA testing to trace his father’s ancestral lineage.

And while Nigeria is far from Whitaker’s home in the US, he was still able to feast on several vegetarian dishes, including several rices and pastas.

“Whitaker and Glover took to the dance floor and moved their bodies to local music proudly by live performers. Soon afterwards, they settled for lunch and each savoured locally prepared dishes of Jollof rice, Semolina and Egusi soup. Whitaker, who is a vegetarian, stayed off meat but enjoyed the other dishes displayed on the table.”

Sounds like a meal made for a chief.

Do we have any African culinary experts out there? What are some great African dishes us non chiefs can whip up in the kitchen?

Omar Epps In Same Veg House As Lisa Edelstein

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 16th, 2009 in Actors.

Yet another celebrity hiding behind his tempeh, Omar Epps, the actor who plays Dr. Eric Foreman on “House” follows a vegetarian diet.

How is it we are just now finding out about this? Must be because he hasn’t gotten naked for PETA yet.

But how incredible it is to know both he and fellow “House” cast mate Lisa Edelstein both keep their houses meat-free.

Treehugger.com has compiled a gallery of Vegetarian Men We Love: Macho Men Who Don’t Eat Meat, where you’ll find Omar, as well as other photos of deliciously meatless men such as Jared Leto, and fun facts like Forest Whitaker remaining vegetarian while putting on 50 pounds to play dictator Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.

Because there’s still a stereotype of vegetarianism and veganism being a “girlie” thing, it’s good to know the boys are getting proper respect.

Forest Whitaker Advocating Falafel Cart Can Ease NY MTA Hikes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008 in Actors.

GQ Magazine Hosts The Gentlemen's Ball - Arrivals

New Yorkers are in an uproar over the fare hikes and service cuts the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has approved in its 2009 budget.

One man expressed his feelings personally by attempting to throw a shoe at Chief Executive Elliot Sander-mimicking the Iraqi reporter who threw his shoes at George W. Bush, before being escorted out.

People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), being the peace and goodwill promoting organization it is, has offered to help solve this problem so hopefully Chief Sander will only be dodging snowballs this winter.

They would like to purchase advertisement on MTA that would allow riders to hear pro-vegetarian testimonials by vegetarian actors Forest Whitaker, Casey Affleck, and Kevin Nealon.

Fantastic idea, but why not take it a bit further. Along with the personal testimonial, include shout outs as to where to find the food. Something like,”I’m Forest Whitaker and I’m a vegetarian. Check out the Falafel cart at 46th and 6th, may make the advertisement dollars go further.

You can listen to each celebrity’s announcement over at PETA’s blog.

FUR Get Me Not Christina Applegate Expected To Recover From Breast Cancer

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 4th, 2008 in Actresses, Fur.

“Samantha Who?” star Christina Applegate is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, but is expected to fully recover, according to her publicist.

Fortunately, the disease was caught in an early stage. Ironically, she is scheduled to appear in the Stand Up To Cancer Telethon next month, which now will probably be an even more personal experience than for some other stars also participating.

Last Holiday season, Applegate joined forces with PETA for a very provocative Christmas e-card, urging holiday shoppers not to buy fur as gifts. The card, shown above, reads, “Cross cruelty off your shopping list by avoiding fur coats, collars, and cuffs (unless it’s fake, of course).”
