Jason Mraz Fishitarian Self Title Confuses Us

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Jason Mraz Performs On NBCs Today

Jason Mraz is known in the veg community for being a vegan, right?

So a recent interview with austin360.com, has left us scratching our heads, crinkling our eyebrows, and saying, “Huh?”

Read for yourself.

“Well, I’d call myself a vegan fishitarian who’s mostly a raw foodist. It’s a totally personal thing. In my case, it’s from touring so much. Everything in my life changed after I tried eating raw food for 30 days the first time – my mind, my physical appearance, my energy. I realized that food really is my fuel. Once I started to commit to whole foods and natural foods, I was like, “This is great!””

We wish these fish eating vegetarians would just call themselves pescatarians.

And how long has the Mr. Mraz been doing this while we’ve been dropping the name “vegan,” without offering any, “but he eats” behind it?

Or does “fishitarian” mean Jason goes fishing then throws the flippers back into the water?

Confused. Bewildered. Guess we’ll have to make some chocomole dessert and think about it for awhile.

Russell Simmons Mission: Relieve Human, Animal Suffering

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink.

Russell Simmons and Keri Hilson front row at the Charlotte Ronson at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2010 Collection, NYC

The vegan, yoga fanatic Russell Simmons sat down with chron.com and gave some thought on health care and improving humanity.

A few excerpts:

As a health-conscious, yoga-practicing vegan, what kind of health-care reform would you like to see?
“Ask people in the aisle, if you speak to Congress. Ask them how many people don’t take money from the health-care industry. Ask them that, and then everybody can be in silence. And then you ask them, “Do you feel comfortable, we’re the only country in the civilized world that doesn’t take care of their sick?””

How would you describe your personal mission?
“To relieve suffering of people, animals and the planet. That’s a life’s goal, to get people out of struggle and to promote consciousness.”

“On a smaller level, giving them the opportunity to go out and achieve and giving them the courage and the confidence … to go out and achieve and change the world — be the change themselves.”

Russell never fails to drop a line about how anybody, anywhere in the world can change themselves by adopting a veg diet.

Sounds like he’s already taken a big step in relieving suffering for both humans and animals.

Ellen DeGeneres Adds Animal Love To American Idol Judges Panel

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 14th, 2009 in Animal Issues, TV Hosts.

The 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards at The Orpheum Theatre in LA

By now you’ve heard the news that American Idol officials have finally found Paula Abdul‘s replacement, Ellen DeGeneres.

Shocked, disappointed, excited-regardless of your feelings about Ellen as a judge, one thing’s for sure: she’ll be bringing a warm heart for animals to the judge’s table.

A vegan and activist who has championed causes like Prop 2 and given away vegan items on her television show, Ellen now makes one more animal advocate along with Simon Cowell.

Simon’s not vegetarian (Ellen, bring your vegan seitan wings to the rehearsals), but he’s been outspoken on animal welfare, including a PSA urging dog owners never to leave their four legged friends locked in a car.

Simon even said he sensed vegetarian Carrie Underwood‘s kindness when she walked into her audition and mentioned putting items about how potential Idol contestants treated animals on the audition questionnaire.

And let’s not forget, Kara Dioguardi reminded everyone to take good care of their dogs too.

Now if only we could get Randy Jackson to get naked in the name of being fur-free.
