Katherine Heigl Attends The 13th Annual ASPCA Bergh Ball In NYC!

The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, founded by Nancy and Katherine Heigl, has teamed up with Last Chance For Animals to offer rewards for abuse cases investigated by LCA.

Like the case of a pit bull found bound by his legs and mouth last month.

England, the pit bull, was released into the care of LCA after receiving medical treatment.

“We will do everything possible to find the person or persons responsible and make sure they are made accountable and punished to the full extent of the law for their actions,” Katherine Heigl stated, according to the LA Independent.

Katherine was recently honored by the ASPCA for her work with animal rights.

Patrick Stump On Whale Hunting And Our Sense Of Urgency (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 29th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Male Musicians, Videos.

Patrick Stump was interviewed by Treehugger at The Climate Rally where he gave his thoughts on the importance of Earth Day.

Stump explained that taking steps to protect the environment is often like other tasks people do in the sense that they wait until it’s an urgent matter instead of planning ahead for the worst.

“I almost feel like there’s going to take there being like 10 whales left before someone to go, ‘Oh, shit, we should stop killing whales’,” he said.

Jack Hanna On Nut Case Animal Rights Activists

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, April 27th, 2010 in Animal Issues.

Jack Hanna Visits The Late Show With David Letterman!

Jack Hanna and animal rights activists aren’t best friends forever.

More recently, he and PETA’s president Ingrid Newkirk shared words over the value of holding dolphins captive in places like SeaWorld.

Another area where he and activists may differ is the area of zoos, where animals are restricted to small spaces versus being free to roam for miles in their natural habitats.

Hanna thinks this is something that’s unavoidable, as some animals cannot be released into the wild.

“I’ve tried working with animal rights groups, and some of those people are just plain nut cases,” Hanna told Northern Express. “You can’t just put all the animals back out into the wild. That’s why we have zoos – good zoos, not bad ones. We have 220 of them in this country. Ninety nine percent of our animals come from other zoos – animals that are born in captivity. Not everyone has the means to travel like I do, and this allows people to see these animals up close. People leave learning something.”

With animal rights activists like PETA, it’s not necessarily the wild they’re recommending, but sanctuaries.

These environments would offer the larger living spaces that more closely mimick an animal’s natural habitat.

George W. Bush Presidential Library Protested By Feral Cats [VIDEO]

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, April 24th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Humor, Politicians, Videos.

Jimmy Kimmel featured a funny video featuring cats recording a “We Are The World” like song about the plight of their eviction.

Definitely worth the watch for some good afternoon humor.

The planned George W. Bush presidential library on the Southern Methodist University campus is also home to feral cats that will soon face eviction.

According to the LA Times, a feral cat program was started by the university in 2005 in an effort to control the population, which has dwindled dramatically since its inception.

It’s expected that the remaining cats will be relocated to a nearby woods area.

One effective way at reducing feral cat numbers and improving their lives (and the accompanying problems such as loud noise from fighting behaviors, flea infestations and odor from males marking territory), is the use of Trap-Neuter-Return programs.

TNR cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated from rabies and surgically ear-tipped, which is the universal sign a cat has gone through the TNR system.

Animal Factory by David Kirby

Animal Factory by David Kirby

Journalist David Kirby recalls the night he slept near a pig farm during his investigations of factory farms.

Kirby wasn’t able to fall asleep that night, as all he heard were pigs fighting, screaming and squealing at each other, a sound he described as “kids being tourtured.”

Those three years of experiences that led to his book, Animal Factory, are just a few that he shared in a recent Time magazine interview, “The Problem With Factory Farms.”

What Exactly is a Factory Farm?
We collectively refer to these facilities as factory farms, but that’s not an official name. The government designation is CAFO, which stands for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation. Basically it’s any farm that has 1,000 “animal units” or more. A beef cow is an animal unit. These animals are kept in pens their entire lives. They’re never outside. They never breathe fresh air. They never see the sun.

What happens to the wastes from factory farms?
The manure is liquefied. It gets flushed out into an open lagoon, where it is stored until farmers can use it on what few crops they do grow. There’s just so much of it, though. I’ve seen it sprayed into waterways and creeks. These “lagoons” filled with waste have been known to seep, leak, rupture, and overtop. This stuff is untreated, by the way. We would never allow big open cesspools of untreated human waste to just sit out on the ground near people’s homes and schools. And yet because it’s agriculture, the rules are different.

Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott Lovers Quarrel?

Tori Spelling revealed 25 Things You Don’t Know About Me to Us Magazine, and several of these secrets lead us to believe Spelling has the potential to be both a great animal activist and vegetarian.

For example, she works with rescue animals and took in cats–even though they make her sneeze!:
“I’m allergic to cats, but I had three of them for years because they’re supercute and I work with rescue animals.”

She wants to open her own animal sanctuary up one day:
“One day, I want to open an animal sanctuary to house all the homeless, unwanted and abandoned animals.”

If we can’t get her off meat completely, she’d likely do well as a pescatarian:
“Could live on sushi and be really happy!”

She’s got that small farmer, grow you own mentality:
“I dream of living on a farm. I want chickens, goats, cows and horses! We want to grow our own veggies and fruits and make our own milk and cheese!”

Vegetarian Star suggests Tori make her own vegan cheese.

Katy Perry Rides Elephant At Perez Hilton Carn-Evil Birthday Party

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Female Singers.

Katy Perry attends the 23rd annual Kids' Choice Awards in Los Angeles

Katy Perry arrived at gossip blogger Perez Hilton‘s 32 Carn-Evil themed birthday bash on top an elephant.

One has to wonder if Perry already had her social drinking experience before she got there, given her choice of transportation.

Besides the obvious unanswered questions like where she parked it, did it like the hors d’ oeuvres, and did it defecate in the appropriate elephant litter box, you have to wonder how the pachyderm coped with all the noise and excitement of the party.

Commenters on PeoplePets figured the festivities were a real downer–for the elephant.

“from atop the elephant, who, according to one witness, “looked perturbed.” I’m sure the poor elephant was..”

“Katy Perry is quite the weirdo isn’t she… always out for the shock factor……Why does she have to exploit animals when doing so? Elephants should be left in the wild or a zoo if that is the last resort, not in a Circus, and not for hire for entertainment purposes. Why don’t these people get a real life!”

Whether the elephant was perturbed from the party entirely or just Lady Gaga‘s newest outfit was not reported.

The next time Perry’s invited to a party, she should leave the elephant at home in the wild or a sanctuary.

It doesn’t mind being a homebody.
