Tippi Hedren Or Emily Deschanel–“Whoville” Would You

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 15th, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Polls/Surveys, Who Would You.

Emily Deschanel and Tippi Hedren were both recognized recently for their contributions to animal welfare. Deschanel received the Humane Society’s Humane Advocate Award for her work with their Prop 2, anti-dog fighting and other campaigns. In the spirit of the holiday season, Hedren was praised by The Grinch and other members of Whoville from the cartoon “Whorton Hears A Who” with the Whomanitarian Award for getting legislation passed to protect big cats and caring for rescued tigers, lions and other cats at the Shambala Preserve, which she founded.

Between the two animal heroes, who would you…

“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” recently got superveganized as Russell Simmons joined the vegan host with his assistants who starred alongside him in the Oxygen reality TV show, “Running Russell Simmons.”

Russell did briefly discuss his new book, Super Rich, but he wasn’t there to only talk about himself. Russell credited several scenes in “Running” showing assistant Simone Reyes discussing vegan and animal rights issues for increasing her popularity among veg and AR communities and the cameras gave her a few seconds of tube time.

In case you missed it, you can get the lowdown on how Simone got involved with veganism in our exclusive interview with her.

The season finale of the Oxygen channel’s “Running Russell Simmons” airs Tuesday at 10/9c. Running’s had only six short episodes, but Simmons’ vegan assistant, Simone Reyes, has had opportunities to demonstrate her values about animals on the show. Vegetarian Star conducted an exclusive interview with Simone, learning this beauty looks just as good in a naked PETA protest as she does behind a desk and computer, as she’s also the author of two books on pets.

Tell us about your journey to veganism.
I joined the animal rights movement about 15 years ago by hooking up with a local, pretty radical group called Activists For Animals. We were small, but loud and powerful. AFA did a lot of on the street grassroots protesting. When I first joined I was still wearing leather shoes…that changed immediately. I became a hard core activist after my first “fur walk” with that group. We yelled at fur wearers and put stickers on their backs that said, “I’m an a**hole I wear fur.” Radical, yes, but it was a great introduction for me. I’m a Leo so we like to do it up big.

You’ve written two books on astrology for pets. That’s a different one! Tell us more about that. If my cat is a Sagittarius, what does this mean about kitty?
I love astrology and I love animals so it made sense to me to pair the two. Let’s see…typically a Sagittarius kitty is adventurous and playful. No animal enjoys being alone but cats born under this sign get especially lonely so definitely get him or her a rescued buddy or at the very least spend more time at home whenever possible. (Simone’s books, Astrology for Cats and Astrology for Dogs, are available through Amazon.)

How did you hook up with Russell Simmons? Did you know he was a vegan before you started working with him and did the fact that you both are ever come up before you got hired?
I was part of the Beastie Boys crew. We all hung out together…connected through David Scilken who we lost way too young. Russell was absolutely NOT a vegan when we met, nor was I. This was in the early days of Def Jam. We didn’t live our lives fully awake until much later. I became vegan way before Russell did.

Favorite eco-friendly fashion brands.
Yes! Cri De Couer , Olsen Haus, Stella McCartney. I also get great tips from www.girliegirlarmy.com that always has new designers showcased who are offering cruelty-free options.

Tofu, tempeh or seitan.
I love tofu! I love tofu sour cream and tofu cream cheese. I love tofu ice cream. I always add tofu to my salads. I’m powered by tofu, no question!

Could it have been a good karma payback when an animal-hater who plans to sabotage an AR event is thwarted when he ends up in the woods overnight?

On a recent episode of “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia,” Frank Reynolds, played by Danny Devito, is scheduled to speak at an animal rights event. Did we mention he hates animals, which is illustrated in the quote, “Animals should be food, rugs and trophies. Why do you think I’m wearing a leather suit?”

John Robbins Hosting “Bold Native” San Francisco Premier

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, November 17th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Authors, Film & TV, Food & Drink.

John Robbins, best selling author and vegan activist who turned down the opportunity to run the family’s Baskin-Robbins ice cream business to campaign against consuming animal products, will host the San Francisco premier of Bold Native, a fiction film about animal rights group Animal Liberation Front.

The premier will take place this Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Red Vic Movie House in San Francisco. The San Francisco Examiner caught up with Robbins to get a few words on the film and his vegan beliefs.

SF Examiner: Why do you want to spread the film’s message?
John Robbins: Ninety-nine percent of the meat that’s eaten in this country comes from inhumane production. Good people who love their dogs or cats and who care about the world are unknowingly eating meat from systems that really are profoundly incompatible with their caring. It’s painful to confront that disconnect but unless we confront it, we can’t do anything about it

Steve Wynn Will Includes Animals But Not Like Ingrid Newkirk

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Business.

We’ve already discovered that Steve Wynn has changed his will to include donations to the Humane Society if he should go to that big casino in the sky anytime soon.

Wynn insists he’s nowhere near that point, but still wanted to show his concern for animals.

He told Las Vegas Weekly:

“I’ve become an animal rights activist. I’m taken care of myself for the rest of my life. So I decided to change my will the last few days in case I croak. I’m not about to, and I’m not planning on that for a long time. But I’ve changed my will to show my concern for animal rights.”

Wynn explained that conditions found in factory farms were some of the motivators to change his diet and will.

Vegan Revolution With Zombies

Vegan Revolution With Zombies

There’s something odd and unique about how vegans and zombies go together in pop culture.

Moby hypothesized that zombies turn down vegans and head straight for the buffet to eat slower, fatter, meat-eating humans. Tainted meat led to the zombie-like creatures Woody Harrelson ran from in Zombieland. And now, a novel playing on the potential atrocities of genetically modified food, Vegan Revolution With Zombies, turns unsuspecting humans who think they’ve found the solution to cruelty-free meat into brain-dead carnivores.

Puppy Thrower Girl Won’t Face Charges Because Of Age

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 7th, 2010 in Animal Issues.

The young lady who was video taped throwing several puppies into a river to drown will not face any charges because police say she is too young to appear before a judge.

This decision has outraged members of PETA in Europe, along with the rumor that the puppies were rescued by a woman who found them shortly afterward.
