William Shatner: Release Lucy The Elephant From Edmonton Zoo

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 in Actors, Animal Issues.

19th Annual Hollywood Charity Horse Show

Actor William Shatner is calling for the release of an elephant from what has been called one of the worst zoos in Canada by elephant expert Winnie Kiiru.

In a letter to Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel, Mr. Shatner wrote, “I humbly ask you to allow Lucy to retire to better circumstances than at the Edmonton Zoo … she’s old, feeble, and many of us know how that feels.”

Canada’s cold temperatures and zoo policy require that Lucy stay indoors for most of the time, which significantly reduces her mobility.

When she is allowed outside, the enclosed area is very dusty and causes her respiratory and foot problems, according to PETA’s blog.

Shatner is an Emmy winning award actor who’s best known for being Captain James T. Kirk on Star Trek as well as his role in Boston Legal.

Naomi Campbell: And The Dennis Basso Fur Flies

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, September 5th, 2009 in Fur, Models.

05_Flatbed_2 - AUGUST

A couple of months ago, we brought you the news that Naomi Campbell agreed to pose in a series of ads promoting fur clothing by fashion designer Dennis Basso.

Campbell had previously worked with PETA in “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaigns, but withdrew her support after the animal rights group targeted fashion designers.

Naomi added the statement, “I do like wearing fur and I still do.”

Celebrity animal rights activists are appalled and Paul McCartney has written a letter to Campbell, according to the New York Daily News.

According to Campbell, she and PETA have embraced each other with love and all is forgiven.

“Yes, I am still wearing fur,” said Campbell, “but I’ve made up with that guy from Peta.”

Don’t know what Campbell means by “made up with” but we’re sure flashing the former coat of an animal for vain fashion purposes takes a lot more than a kiss and hug for anyone-PETA person or not-to get over.

Michael Vick: Time With Animal Lovers Made Me Remorse

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, August 18th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports.

Michael Vick second day of practice

Michael Vick has blogged at globalgrind.com, which is, ironically, a website started by vegan Russell Simmons.

In his post, Vick claims the one thing that made him remorseful for his role in dog fighting was meeting dozens of animal lovers and activists.

“Sitting in a prison cell didn’t make me feel remorse. It was meeting so many animal lovers, speaking with them and looking them in their eyes. Staring at them. Looking so deep into their eyes that I began to feel their pain. Allowing that pain to enter into my body is when I started to understand how bad it really was. I have been trying hard to connect with people who feel this pain, because for my whole life I was disconnected from the suffering of animals. And you might say, “come on Mike, how could you do those things to those dogs?” And you’re right…I ask myself those questions every day. What kind of person does this? How does a human-being treat dogs or any animal with such pain and cruelty? And the hard part for me is the answer to these questions. Because the answer is ME. And I am trying so hard right now to become a better person, because who I was, I am ashamed of.”

What do you think? Is Vick legit? Or are these fake feelings of empathy in a well pulled publicity stunt?

Pink Plays Perth

Things just got real ugly in Philadelphia, as the city of brotherly love that Michael Vick recently signed to play football with just happens to be the hometown of singer and animal activist Pink.

Yes, THE Pink. Same gal who suggested Kanye West be skinned and made into a fur coat for his fur loving tendencies.

Her latest kind thoughts about Vick from Twitter:

“wow. michael vick in MY hometown, Philly. of all the places. I hope the fans tear him to pieces like his beloved dogs”

There are already several protests planned in Philly.

Rosario Dawson, Zookeeper Stars Told To Fake It

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 13th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Film & TV.

Backstage at Grace Jones performance at the Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC with celebrities in attendance Bette Midler, Rosario Dawson and Randy Jones of the Village People

The Zookeeper, a movie about a man who wins a lady’s love, recently began filming.

The company Birds & Animals Unlimited has been contracted to supply animals for the film, although PETA alleges it has a rap sheet of USDA violations longer than a giraffe’s neck.

PETA has taken the opportunity to write to Rosario Dawson, Adam Sandler, Cher and Sylvester Stallone asking them not to use the company’s services.

“We’re hoping to enlist the film’s stars to keep cruelty off the set,” said PETA spokesperson Amanda Schinke.

“Exotic animals used as involuntary ‘actors’ are routinely subjected to rigorous and abusive training methods to coerce them into performing acts that are stressful, uncomfortable, confusing and even painful.”

Even better, PETA suggests The Zookeeper crew take advantage of modern technology such as computer generated imagery.

A spokesperson for the animal rights group, Debbie Leahy said, “When it comes to exotic animal characters, the best casting choice is to ‘fake it.’ Even under the best of circumstances, captivity can be hell for exotic animals.”
