Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars demonstrated his vegan pancake making skills.

Or maybe lack thereof since there was small fire involved…

In the end, the flapjacks were probably very tasty, so he at least deserves a Honorable Mention for efforts.

Concert food is hit or miss when it comes to veganism. Most venues can offer you soda, fries and maybe a pretzel, so it’s natural to sneak a few protein bars in an area you hope won’t get patted down before you enter the arena.

But 30 Seconds to Mars singer Jared Leto is revolutionizing the way vegetarians chow at musical performances. If his trend is followed nationwide, we could soon to spooning up vegan pancakes at the next Moby show.

Jared Leto joked that he and the members of 30 Seconds To Mars now sacrifice tofu instead of animals, but he forgot to mention the gods like organic granola as well.

Leto may be caught munching on the snack in between interviews to promote the band’s latest album, This Is War.

Granola sounds healthy and all, but if you’re not careful, the added ingredients of high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils in some bars can negate the good for you effects of the oat snack.

Better yet, be a DIYer and make your own.

Here’s a recipe from sustainable chef Alton Brown sweetened with maple syrup and brown sugar.

  • 3 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup slivered almonds
  • 1 cup cashews
  • 3/4 cup shredded sweet coconut
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup raisins

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the oats, nuts, coconut, and brown sugar.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine maple syrup, oil, and salt. Combine both mixtures and pour onto 2 sheet pans. Cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes to achieve an even color.
  4. Remove from oven and transfer into a large bowl. Add raisins and mix until evenly distributed.

ELLE Style Awards 2010 - Arrivals

30 Seconds to Mars singer Jared Leto has revealed secret, possibly rooted in ancient tradition, ceremonies he and the other two band members, Shannon Leto and Tomo Milisevic, share.

Instead of sacrificing animals before a performance, Leto says soybeans are offered.

“Well there was a time when we used to sacrifice goats but then we all became vegans so we’ve been sacrificing tofu before the shows!” Leto joked on Myspace, according to Gigwise.

Dude is close to 40, but doesn’t look like he’s legal to even play at some of the venues where 30 Seconds takes the stage.

The youth gods must love tofu!

A scruffy Jared Leto heads home after dining at West Hollywoods Katsuya restaurant

Jared Leto was spotted hanging out at LA hot spot Bardot and enjoying some late night vegan grub!

A source said the actor and rocker, “chilled in the lounge with a couple of buddies.”

If you recall us telling you, Leto played the role of spider rescuer at a party for Proposition 2 that Olivia Wilde attended. When a huge, black spider was aiming for musician Moby’s head during his performance, Leto didn’t hesitate to rush in and, instead of killing it, place it back on the ground.

Speaking of bars, how easy is it to find good vegan grub there? A bar in Hollywood may be more likely to have vegan fare, but everywhere else? Have you been able to find good veg food at 2:00 AM to munch on while you sip your vegan Heineken?

Olivia Wilde’s Vegan! Pancake Princess On Ellen DeGeneres

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, February 23rd, 2009 in Actresses, Videos.

Olivia Wilde, star of Fox’s TV series House, made an appearance recently on the Ellen DeGeneres show and announced she’s a full vegan!

We had teased Olivia in the past for being “mostly vegetarian” but still eating fish.

She first met Ellen at a fundraiser for Prop 2, a California measure which passed last year to ensure certain farm animals can move freely.

She discussed how Moby was performing at the Prop 2 fundraiser when a huge spider came aiming for Moby’s bald head.

Of course, in the interest of animals, the spider wasn’t killed-it was picked up by Jared Leto who announced at the microphone, “We’re here for the animals. That means every animal.”

Wilde’s husband is Italian, who’s father was a prince, so that technically makes her a princess! Or according to Ellen, a “pancake princess.”

Olivia’s never lost an eating contest and tells the story of how she ate 33 pancakes in 20 minutes.

She challenges Ellen to a future vegan eating contest, but Ellen suggests Portia could be a better competitor.

Uh-oh. Ellen’s revealed a behind closed doors secret!
