Vegetarian Star

Kyra Sedgwick was just a few degrees of separation (had to add that since her husband is Kevin Bacon, you know) from veganism when her brother Rob opened up a vegan ice cream parlor.

Now her character on the police drama The Closer, Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, is narrowing that gap as her fiance Fritz’s (Jon Tenney) sister Claire helps them prepare for the wedding.

Amy Sedaris plays Claire, another vegan claiming to have psychic powers, who is super hyper and extremely excited to help with the wedding.

Since Claire considers herself a great cook, she’s brought along a few dishes for the happy couple to try.

Sprout salad, vegetarian faux “chicken” pot pie, her own version of Tofurkey, and carob and walnut souffle.

“I hope you like vegan,” Claire says after rambling off her samples.

If Brenda doesn’t, she’ll sure learn to love it. Ha!

You can bet workers on his tour will only be eating veg. A longtime vegetarian, Morrissey has worked with PETA and never fails to speak up when it comes to animal issues.

Morrissey is often recognized as the most important British musician of his generation. If you followed the Whale Wars series on Animal Planet, you know Captain Paul Watson and his crew on the Steve Irwin ship, which included actress Daryl Hannah, used prank-like tactics to throw off the whalers to try to keep them from killing whales in what they claim is for research purposes, including throwing rancid stink butter bombs at the ship.

Now, the whalers have fought back. After the Steve Irwin collided with the Japanese whaler ship, the hunters decided to get even by throwing chunks of bloodied whale and whale fat at the Captain and his crew.

Interestingly enough, if the whales are captured for research purposes, why are the whalers throwing away good study material? If they’re allowed to capture them, surely they’d find a good use for the materials besides blubber bombs. 

Captain Watson claims the collision was accidental. Japanese whalers say otherwise. Take a look and tell us what you think.

The Ashley Judd vs. Sarah Palin feud now has a third party jumping in. CNN has featured a clip from Showbiz Tonight with several people weighing in on the debate, but it looks as though they’re all weighted down on Palin’s side.

Recap: Sarah Palin thinks Alaskans should be able to shoot wolves from a plane. Ashley Judd says no. Ashley teams up with Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund to record a video, helping to give the group publicity as they keep adding details to their “list” of the decisions Palin has made regarding the environment and animals. Sarah Palin calls them “extreme.” Judd get on Larry King Live to further discuss Palin’s record. Even The View’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck throws her two cents in.

If you like watching the “Extras” portion on DVDs you should take a look at these outtakes from Stephen Colbert’s Paul McCartney interview.

“Here’s my problem with vegetarianism,” says Colbert. “You can’t hunt vegetables. You cannot stalk a stalk of broccoli. You can’t fire off a shotgun into a field of asparagus.”

Paul suggests another type of “hunt” that takes place in your supermarket after spotting the vegetable of your choice.

“You don’t have to fire…lasso them…Broccoli, you’re mine…Straight to the checkout counter.”

When Ashley Judd announced her partnership with Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, Sarah Palin shot back criticizing both the vegetarian actress and the group.

Now Judd is firing back at Palin’s latest statements on Larry King Live, where she alleges Palin’s aerial wolf hunt policies are more to do with her “pet project” than concern for wildlife. Judd claims not only do the people who use moose and caribou not use planes to shoot wolves, but that Palin has voted in ways that has hurt the populations dependent on this practice and that Alaskans have voted against Palin’s policies several times.

Some quotes from the interview:

“What is really important is to maintain a healthy and natural ecological balance between predators and prey. And allowing wealthy humans, primarily urban hunters or those who are bounty hunters from out of state, to go to Alaska and for sport hire airplanes, hire private pilots to fly around and kill wolves in this incredibly savage manner, it’s not right. It is not ethical. It is not appropriate. It doesn’t make sense on any level.”

“I think what I find particularly galling in the governor’s statement is that somehow this is interfering with poor rural Alaskan’s ability to subsistence hunt. That is a distortion. In fact, there is a native tribe in the area who applied to be able to expand their subsistence hunting and she said no. This is for urban hunters. It’s for trophy hunters from out of state. And in terms of managing the population of caribou, hello, wolves do that best. That’s why the natives honor them as the animal that keeps genetic populations healthy.”

In response to Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s criticism of not paying attention to humans as much as animals:

“We can fight poverty and pollution at the same time. These things go hand in glove. Caring about human rights, caring about conservation, of course they fit together naturally. Look at Rwanda, stress on the environment, competition for resources due to overpopulation, genocide. It all works together. So it doesn’t — it’s not an either/or conversation anymore.”

Ashley Judd came to the defense of the wolves Sarah Palin advocated killing, now a celebrity is coming to Palin’s defense.

Elizabeth Hasselbeck of  The View is upset because she feels celebrities stand up for animal rights more than they do humans. She recently spoke about  Judd collaborating with the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund to expose Sarah Palin’s environmental track record.

“The problem that I have here is like a lot of these vocal celebrities, in a way, get very loud about these animal killings. Like is she loud as..she said, ‘How many wolves have been killed? 900 this year.’ Is she as loud about the 260,000 kids killed in abortions?”

Her comment results in Joyce Behar asking her to stick to talking about wolves as the discussion heats up.

The stereotype among many non animal rights activists is that the activists have more regard for animals than people. Do you think if animal rights activists voiced their support for human rights more often (while continuing to vouch for animals), they’d get a better reputation?

Ira Glass is the producer and host of NPR’s This American Life, who started playing poker after doing a story on professional poker players. That story wasn’t the only one that prompted Glass to make changes in his life.

A woman who ran a poultry advocacy group and rescued chickens from poultry trucks was upset because every year around Thanksgiving and Christmas (during higher consumptions of chicken), This American Life would feature a show about chickens called “The Poultry Slam,” a spin off of a poetry slam.

He featured a story on her and after visiting the United Poultry Concerns Chicken Sanctuary on the Eastern Shore, he started eating less and less chicken, eventually stopping altogether and becoming vegetarian.

Much like cartoonist Dan Piraro discovered after his visit to a Farm Sanctuary, Ira says he surprisingly found chickens with different personalities, such as the “shy” ones and the “outgoing” ones.

Here’s a video of Glass on the David Letterman Show discussing his visit, both humorously and seriously describing the events that led up to his vegetarianism.

When Glass asks Dave if he’s met any chickens, Dave sarcastically answers “not more than usually one sauteed breast at a time.”
