Daphne Oz

Daphne Oz

One of Daphne Oz‘s tips in her book, Dorm Room Diet, is to make breakfast the largest meal of the day.

In other words, eat like a Roman Gladiator would.

Scientists who’ve examined the skeletons of the soldiers discovered they were large beefcakes, but rarely ate animal proteins. Based on the levels of zinc and strontium in cells, experts are able to determine the diet of the deceased warriors. Because the Gladiators had higher levels of strontium and little zinc, it was determined they ate mainly vegetarian.

Yet, these guys were HUGE with strong bone density so it’s a safe bet they’re breakfasts consisted of high protein, good carbs and a decent amount of good fat like Oz’s super starter of the day meal, Gladiator Oatmeal.

Brandy Norwood

Brandy Norwood (singer Brandy) has been rumored to be vegetarian, but according to a feature in US Magazine on celebrity New Year’s resolutions, Brandy is thinking of taking her diet a step further and give up eggs and dairy. Again.

“Just being healthier,” Brandy said. “I’m going to try to go back to being a vegan.”

Sounds as if she’s been down this path before.

If a diet change involving animal products is your New Year’s resolution, you may want to do it, excuse the pun, “cold turkey,” according to Reid Hester, director of research at Behavior Therapy Associates.

John Salley is starring in a brand new PSA produced by the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine that encourages a plant-based, vegan diet to prevent and treat diabetes, “Block Diabetes.”

According to Salley in the PSA, 1 out of 3 children will develop Type 2 diabetes in their lifetime.

The PCRM conducted a study, along with George Washington University and the University of Toronto with funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Diabetes Action Research and Education Foundation, which found patients with Type 2 Diabetes had better improved blood sugar levels, lost more weight, and improved cholesterol levels more when they followed a vegan diet than when they followed one suggested by the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA’s) guidelines, which allows meat and dairy in certain amounts.

The China Study

The China Study

“I came from a dairy farm and started my career strongly believing in the nutritional value of this food, especially for its protein content. But, in our experiments, we documented multiple times a remarkable ability of the main protein of cow’s milk, casein, to promote cancer growth and to do so by a plethora of mechanisms. For many years, animal-based protein, like casein, has been known to increase blood cholesterol and encourage early stages of heart disease.”

Dr. T. Colin Campbell, author of “The China Study,” and inspiration for Bill Clinton going vegan on how dairy products may not do a body good like those milk commercials claim. And while casein protein has been associated with heart disease, soy protein has been found to benefit cholesterol by lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and raising HDL (good) levels.

Will the new slogan for health soon be, “Soymilk. It does a body’s heart good?”

Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin is still justifying her caribou kill on her TLC show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” by arguing she’s feeding her family with stuff’s that’s healthier than what’s in the supermarket.

During an interview with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, Palin explained her stance.

“We eat, therefore we hunt — and I am thankful that I get to feed my kids organic food,” Palin said.

However, studies have shown that wild game isn’t really that organic after all, and could contain dangerous levels of lead due to the way it’s killed in the wild. The Department of Natural Resources has warned against eating wild game because of this and a study conducted by British and Spanish researchers published in the journal PLos ONE found similar results.

Bob Barker

Bob Barker has been named an honorary fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Barker is the first person in the entertainment industry to receive the award.

Through Barker’s generous donations, hundreds of law students at prestigious schools around the country can study animal law, including at Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, Northwestern, Duke, Georgetown, Virginia and Columbia.

“We cannot change the world for animals without also changing people’s ideas about animals. Almost single-handedly Bob’s sagacity and generosity have – in little more than a decade – propelled animals from being a marginal issue into the academic mainstream. This is a colossal achievement”, said Professor Linzey, Director of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics.

Barker joins a line of several honorary fellows that include Nobel Laureate for Literature, Professor J. M. Coetzee and Madame Jeanne Marchig, founder of the Marchig Trust for Animal Welfare.

Dr. Mehmet Oz

Dr. Oz tackled the subject of genetically modified foods on a recent episode of his daytime talk show and invited three guests to join him on the debate, Jeffrey Smith, non-GM advocate and author of Seeds of Deception, Michael Hansen PhD of Consumer’s Union and Pamela C. Ronald PhD, genetic scientist and author of Tomorrow’s Table, who insists there is no scientific evidence that GM foods are harmful. A study looking at GM soy and sterility and mortality in hamsters may have you disagreeing with Ronald, though.

A quick poll of Oz’s audience reveled 80% of them preferred not to purchase genetically modified food and when it came down to a taste test between the two, all but one organic product was chosen over the conventional variety.

Jason Ellis

Jason Ellis

MMA fighter and proskater Jason Ellis shows off his impressive collection of tattoos for PETA2’s “Ink Not Mink,” campaign against fur.

Ellis has discussed animal rights issues with the group before. He once said of the tactics used on animals in the circus to coerce them to perform or behave, “You don’t know what’s going on in the circus. They don’t tell you, like, ‘Hey, man, just so you know, this elephant gets the s*** beaten out of him.”

The tiger definitely looks cuter on Ellis’ arm than jumping through hoops of fire.
